Below is a capacitance meter that is simple in terms of circuit design, which even a novice radio amateur can make. Nevertheless, the device has a measurement accuracy of about 4%, which is quite acceptable for many amateur radio work.

Capacitance meter on a logic chip

The device has four sub-ranges determined by the position of the SA1 switch. In position 1, capacitors with a capacitance of up to 50 pF are measured, 2 - up to 500 pF, 3 - up to 5000 pF and 4 - up to 0,05 μF. On the elements DA1.1 and DA1.2, a generator of rectangular pulses is made.

The generation frequency depends on the capacitance of the capacitor and the resistance of the resistor included in the feedback circuit by the switch. It is largest in switch position 1 and smallest in position 4. Logic elements DD1.3 and DD1.4 are connected in parallel. This provides a sufficiently large charging current of the measured capacitor Cx, which is connected to the sockets XS1 and XS2.

Increasing the charging current reduces the effect of the leakage resistance of the capacitor Cx on the indicator readings. The indication is carried out by a pointer measuring head with a total deflection current of 1 mA and a frame resistance of 240 Ohm. An important condition for the accuracy of work is the selection of diodes VD1 and VD2 - they must be high-frequency and have the same parameters.

The capacitance meter is adjusted separately for each subrange. The range switch is set to the appropriate position. A capacitor with a precisely known capacitance is connected to the sockets. By adjusting one of the tuning resistors R1 - R 4 (of the corresponding subrange), the desired reading is achieved on the indicator scale.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Modern teenagers are lagging behind in development 29.09.2017

Modern teenagers develop more slowly than their peers from previous generations, a study has shown. They are also less likely to participate in activities such as driving and working as adults.

American scientists decided to find out how fast modern teenagers are growing. It turned out that this indicator has significantly decreased compared to the growth rate of adolescents from previous generations.

Modern young people are much less likely to engage in any serious business like work or driving a car, preferring to be taken over by adults.

Researchers at the University of San Diego examined how often teens engage in activities that adults also do but children don't, including romantic dates, paid jobs, driving, traveling without parents, and having sex. They targeted 8,3 million teenagers aged 13 to 19 between 1976 and 2012.

The speed of development, hobbies, and leisure among adolescents in the 2000s, 1990s, 1980s, and 1970s were compared with each other. In general, it has been proven that the current generation of teenagers enjoys working, dating, drinking alcohol, going out without parents, or having sex much less than teenagers from previous generations.

This trend cannot be explained by the fact that teenagers are spending more time doing homework, as the volume and time spent on homework also decrease from generation to generation. It is possible, the authors of the study believe, that these changes can be explained by the amount of time that teenagers spend on the Internet. This indicator has demonstrated the most powerful growth in the last 20 years.

In addition, in recent years there has been significant infantilism, when teenagers prefer to stay longer on the neck of their parents. Perhaps this is due to an increase in overall life expectancy, the tendency of women to give birth to children at a later age, as well as later education. Many teenagers simply do not want to take responsibility, preferring to leave it to adults.
