When starting powerful (2 ... 7 kW) and high-speed (3000 rpm and more) electric motors, our craftsmen experience serious difficulties. Most of these motors are designed for a three-phase network, and they have to be powered from a more affordable single-phase one.

At the moment of starting a powerful high-speed motor, the current in the line increases many times, which causes heating of the supply wires and a sharp drop in voltage. If you turn on the protection on the bulbs [1] in series with the engine, then the engine will definitely never start. To facilitate starting, powerful cables are used and the motor shaft is manually unwound using a cord. But wires suitable for the cross section are not always at hand, and spinning with a cord is a dangerous and inconvenient task, since in most cases the engine is located inside a metal frame or housing.

Until now, I considered circuit [2] to be the best solution to the problem, but then I came across another circuit solution, which, after a little refinement, surpassed [2]. According to the new scheme, starting switching has been simplified, now it is enough to turn the SA1 switch handle (see figure), and the engine will reach its operating speed. Engine spin-up is carried out automatically according to the "star" scheme. The direction of rotation is set by the capacitor.

On the inclusion of a three-phase motor in a single-phase network

By excluding the capacitor from the circuit and connecting the third phase (dashed line in the figure), we get a star-delta switch for quickly adapting the electric motor to various voltages of a three-phase circuit.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Smart pillow Nitetronic F1 17.09.2023

The Nitetronic F1 smart pillow, presented by the German startup Ninetronic, has gone on sale. This innovative pillow combines water cooling and white noise technology to create the perfect sleeping environment. Plus, a graphene pillowcase is available for winter nights to provide extra warmth.

The device is divided into two parts: water and air. Filling the water part is simple and does not require the use of special liquids. The antibacterial pill included in the kit ensures the purity of the water in the pillow throughout the year.

The air part can be adjusted to your liking by adjusting the height and softness of the pillow. Each side has unique characteristics: the air side is soft and bouncy, while the water side creates a feeling of light cooling and floating above the bed.

The manufacturer claims to have paid special attention to head and neck support to ensure optimal sleep comfort and prevent problems with stiffness in the morning.

In addition, in collaboration with Open AI, the pillow has a built-in white noise generator that offers unique sound combinations for a more restful sleep. This generator creates soothing sounds, such as water flow, heartbeat or nature sounds, to help you relax and fall asleep faster.

In case of cold nights, it is possible to purchase a graphene pillowcase, which will ensure uniform and rapid heating of the pillow, creating a feeling of warmth and comfort.

The Nitetronic F1 project is available to order on Kickstarter starting at $79. For an additional $20, you can purchase a graphene pillowcase warmer for complete comfort on cold days and nights.

My electric motor has only 380 V star leads, but you need to connect 220 V to one phase.
