According to GOST9466-75, symbol of electrodes for arc welding and steel surfacing is a long shot. For example:

Its numerator contains the type of electrode E46A, its brand UONI-13/45, diameter 3,0 mm and a group of two letters and numbers UDZ. The first letter of this group Y indicates the purpose of the electrode, the second D - the thickness of the coating, the number 3 - the group of electrodes according to the quality of workmanship.

The denominator contains the letter E (electrode), a group of indices 412(5), indicating the characteristics of the weld metal and weld metal (according to GOST 9467-75, GOST 10051-75 or GOST 10052-75) and a group of one letter and two numbers B20. The letter B indicates the type of coating, the first digit 2 is the allowable spatial positions during welding, the second digit 0 is the requirement for the arc power supply.

Code of the letter of the purpose of the electrodes:

U - for structural steels with tensile strength <600 MPa (60 kgf/mm2);
L - for alloyed structural steels with >600 MPa (60 kgf/mm2);
T - for heat-resistant alloyed steels;
B - for high-alloy steels;
H - for surfacing.

Designation of electrode coating thickness:

M - thin;
C - average;
D - thick;
G - especially thick.

By quality, the electrodes are divided into three groups 1,2 and 3, where the quality requirements increase from group 1 to group 3. Index group decoding, indicating the characteristics of the deposited metal and the weld metal, is given in Table. 17.7.

Notes: 1. The first two digits of the index are the temporary resistance in tens of megapascals. 2. The figure characterizes at the same time σ and Th. If these indicators correspond to different indexes in the table, then the third index is set according to δ, and then in parentheses give the fourth additional index characterizing Tx. 3. Tx - the minimum temperature at which the impact strength, on samples with a V-shaped notch, is not less than 0,35 MJ / m2 (3,5 kgf-m / cm2).

Designation of coating types:

A - sour;
B - main;
R - rutile;
C - cellulose;
P - other types of coverage;
G - with a coating content of> 20% iron powder.

Mixed coatings are designated by two letters.

Permissible spatial positions during welding or surfacing are indicated as follows:

1 - for all positions;
2 - for all positions except vertical from top to bottom;
3 - for the bottom, horizontal on a vertical plane and vertical from bottom to top;
4 - only the bottom.

By the nature and polarity of the current used in welding or surfacing, as well as by the rated open-circuit voltage of an alternating current source with a frequency of 50 Hz, the electrodes subdivided in accordance with the table. 17.8.

Note. The number 0 denotes electrodes intended for welding or surfacing only on direct current of reverse polarity.

Thus, the above symbol for the UONI-13/45 electrode can be deciphered as follows. E46A - type of electrode; UONI-13/45 - brand; 3,0 - electrode diameter, mm; U - electrode for welding carbon steels with <600 MPa (60 kgf/mm2); D - thick coating; 3 - the third group in terms of workmanship; 41- ≥410 MPa; 2- δ > 22%; (5) - Тх = -40°С; B - basic coating; 2 - welding is possible in all spatial positions, except for vertical from top to bottom; 0 - weld only with direct current of reverse polarity (plus on the electrode).
