Short circuit may occur due to a violation of the insulation between the phase wires, the phase wire and the neutral wire of the network, or when the phase wire is shorted to metal structures that are connected to the ground, short to ground.

A short circuit can be complete (metal) and incomplete. With a full circuit, the transient resistance at the place of the wire closure is insignificant, and it can be neglected. More often, an incomplete short circuit occurs, since in the places where the wires are shorted, a transition resistance appears due to loose contacts, the formation of an oxide film, and charring of the insulation.

In the event of a metal short circuit, protection is triggered, which turns off the network. In case of an incomplete short circuit, the protection devices cannot work, resulting in a fire. A fire is also possible with the wrong choice of protection devices.

The greatest fire hazard have wires and cables in polyethylene insulation.

A fire can occur due to an overload in the network when connecting electrical receivers, the rated current consumption of which exceeds the allowable current for a given section of the network wire or if the section of the conductor is incorrectly selected. In case of overload, the protection may not work until the wires are heated to ignition temperature, then a short circuit occurs between them. Especially dangerous is overload in the electrical networks of private residential buildings, garden buildings, since they often do not have overload protection devices, but only devices that turn off the network in case of a short circuit. In terms of fire, significant transient resistances that occur at the junction of wires, their connection to switches, sockets, shields, and household appliances are dangerous.

Reliability of contact is ensured by crimping, soldering or special clamps equipped with spring washers.

It should be borne in mind that even with proper connection in special clamps, after 3-3,5 years, the resistance of the contacts increases by 2 times. To a large extent, the transition resistance increases during short-term short circuits, which are switched off when the protection is working properly. With an increase in transient resistance and non-emergency operation of the power network, protection devices do not turn off, since the current is insufficient for their operation. At the same time, the wire at the point of contact with a large contact resistance can heat up to the ignition temperature of the insulation.

Even with a slight overload in the network, but with a large transient resistance at the point of contact and a long failure of the protection, the wire can catch fire.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Travel faster with a mobile phone 31.08.2011

A mobile phone will tell you how to travel by public transport without delay. In the bright future that awaits the inhabitants and visitors of the European Union from 2012, traveling by public transport will become very easy.

To do this, you just need to download the "SMART-WAY" application to your smartphone, which was developed by researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Transport and Infrastructure Systems (Dresden). And then it will be enough to indicate the destination, after which the smartphone itself will tell you about the location of bus stops, railway stations, timetables for vehicles and transfer points. In general, as a navigator for a motorist, only in a pedestrian version.

The system is based not only on the navigation system sensor in the smartphone, which allows you to determine its location, but also on the data of transport companies on the movement of their buses, trains, trolleybuses and trams. The fact is that now in developed countries it is customary to equip all these objects with both navigation sensors and inertia sensors, thanks to which you can determine whether the expected bus is driving or is stuck in a traffic jam.

The company dispatcher receives all this data in real time, and it doesn't cost him anything to share it with the whole world to make it easier for this world to travel. In September of this year, the system will be launched in trial mode in Dresden and Turin, and then German researchers hope to negotiate with transport workers in other EU cities.
