The formation and detection of the SSB signal using phase-shifting devices attract the attention of radio amateurs in that this method can significantly simplify both the receiving and transmitting paths of the radio station. Of greatest interest to a radio amateur is the simplest two-phase method for generating an SSB signal, so we will talk about phase shifters that provide two voltages at the output, shifted in phase by 90 °. However, the principles outlined in this note can also be applied to multi-phase systems.

Digital phase shifter

To obtain good signal parameters using the phase method, greater accuracy and stability of both LF and HF phase shifters are required. In this case, it is often required that the RF phase shifter be a band shifter, that is, that the phase shift does not change when the frequency changes. These requirements are met by a discrete phase shifter based on binary digital elements. The principle of its operation is as follows: if rectangular signals of the same frequency with a duty cycle equal to two and a phase shift of 180 ° are applied to the counting inputs of two triggers, then signals of half the frequency, shifted in phase by 90 ° at any input frequency. Such a phase shifter provides very high accuracy and stability of the phase rotation, which are determined only by the parameters of the input signals, namely the duty cycle and phase shift. The stability of these parameters can be ensured by preliminary dividing the frequency of the master oscillator with another trigger, at the outputs of which the signals we need will be automatically generated.

The practical implementation of a discrete RF phase shifter, however, still encounters difficulties, since even with the use of modern integrated circuits at frequencies above 1 MHz, the delay in the switching moment of triggers already begins to affect, and due to its temperature instability and spread, it turns out to be impossible to provide the necessary accuracy of the phase shift. With an increase in the speed of microcircuits produced by the industry, this difficulty will certainly be overcome.

However, a discrete frequency phase shifter below 1 MHz can be used even now, for example, in the formation of an SSB signal by a phase-filter method. So, the phase shifter, the schematic diagram of which is shown in the figure, provides a phase rotation of 90 ° with an accuracy of more than 0,001% at a frequency of 1,5 kHz and 0,25% at a frequency of 100 kHz. The master oscillator circuit can be anything, it is only important that the fronts of its pulses are steep enough to trigger trigger D1. If the shape of the output signals of the master oscillator is close to sinusoidal, a pulse shaper must be connected between the generator and the trigger.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

An effective way to control mosquitoes 15.06.2020

An aerosol made by combining a type of volcanic glass with water has shown an effective method to control malaria-carrying mosquitoes, according to a new study. The results obtained may be useful for reducing the populations of these insects in Africa.

Malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Every year, the disease claims the lives of about 400 people in Africa.

There are many remedies that repel bloodsuckers. But mosquitoes are becoming increasingly resistant to commonly used insecticides such as pyrethroids, so alternative safe chemicals to control them are very important.

Scientists have found that a volcanic mineral, perlite, most commonly used in building materials and as a soil additive in gardens, may also help control malaria mosquitoes.

A spray based on it (Imergard WP) was developed for the treatment of interior walls. This aerosol does not contain any additional chemicals, is non-toxic to mammals and will be cost effective. Early results show that mosquitoes are not resistant to perlite aerosol.

The results showed that the mosquito mortality rate in rooms treated with Imergard WP was above 80% within five months of treatment and 78% within six months.

"The statically transferred perlite particles essentially dehydrate the mosquitoes," said Mike Roe, NC State Distinguished Professor of Entomology William Neil Reynolds.

According to scientists, mosquitoes die within a few hours after contact with the treated surface.
