homemade iron

The design of the proposed iron is simple and affordable for anyone who has ever dealt with a hacksaw, a file and a drill at home.

So, take an iron from your neighbors and, putting it on a sheet of 3-5 mm duralumin, circle it with a pencil or scribe along the contour. The marking of the sole of the future iron is ready. Cut it with a hacksaw or jigsaw along the contour, file the edges with a file, rounding them. Then, in the resulting workpiece, drill 2 holes for countersunk rivets. One fifth of all cases, one might say, behind

Next up is the pen. Cut a strip for it from a sheet of duralumin or steel 2 mm thick, file the edges with a file. Having drilled holes in it according to the drawing, bend the base of the handle in shape. And having made the upper and lower caps from a wooden block and plywood, connect them with screws. Glue the finished handle to the sole of the iron. After processing the latter with a sandpaper, and then with a felt wheel with paste until a mirror surface is obtained, attach a block made of a plug made of a plug with removed current-carrying pins and drilled two holes with a diameter of 3 mm on the M4 screws with nuts.

Now in turn - a thermal electric heating element. To lay it, you should prepare a "dough" from liquid glass (silicate or office glue), talc (sand), chalk (tooth powder) or asbestos chips. This mixture should have the density of sour cream. The "dough" is rolled out in an even layer 2-5 mm thick on the surface of the sole, previously degreased with gasoline or acetone. Then a heater is laid - a spiral of nichrome wire. For example, from an electric stove, fireplace or iron.

If such a spiral was not at hand, then it could turn out to be the same (in order to avoid local overheating) gaps of 0,3-0,5 mm wide.

Iron (click to enlarge): 1 - the base or sole of the iron is sheet lural aluminum, 2 - the base of the handle (strip from D16 or St3). 3 - insulating block (from a plug), 4 - electric plug, 5 - electric cord, 6 - wooden lining, 7 - screw with a diameter of 3,5 mm (2 pcs), 8 - M4 screw with a nut (2 t.), 9 - upper layer of insulation, 10 - thermal electric heating element, 11 - lower layer of insulation, 12 - rivet with a diameter of 5 mm (2 pcs.).

You can check the performance of the manufactured spiral and adjust it for the normal operation of the iron as follows. Putting a nichrome heater on an insulating and heat-resistant material (asbestos, dry wood), turn on the network. The color of the spiral should soon become dark cherry. If the heating is weak, it is necessary to reduce the length of the winding (of course, after disconnecting from the mains

After laying the finished spiral, an additional layer of "dough" is applied. Smooth it out to give the iron a finished look. Then a power cord with a plug is connected to the ends of the spiral, fixed in an electrical insulating box (moreover, the heater supply to the latter is also covered with a layer of "dough"). The finished product is allowed to dry for two days, after which one probe of the avometer touches the sole of the iron, and the second - the current-receiving pin of the plug and measures the insulation resistance. It should be in the range of 480-520 kOhm. Such an iron can already be safely included in the network.

If suddenly difficulties arise in the manufacture of the iron with the acquisition of components for the preparation of the "dough", then ordinary clay can also be used for thermal insulation. It is applied to the sole with a 7-mm layer, and a groove is made with a wooden stick for the subsequent laying of the spiral. The clay is then dried.

After drying the first layer, a spiral is laid in the groove. And from above everything is again covered with clay. Dry again. After the top layer has dried, the insulation resistance is checked and, if it is normal, the iron is put into operation.

When using an iron, you should not neglect the measures of protection against electric shock. When dampening the laundry during ironing, make sure that as little water splashes as possible on the insulating layers. Do not leave the iron unattended, protect it from shock, and it will serve you properly. After all, the thermal electric heater here is of a closed type: it oxidizes less and works more reliably.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Enzyme to break down plastic per day 11.05.2022

Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have used artificial intelligence to develop a synthetic enzyme that breaks down plastic waste in 24 hours.

The researchers studied the natural structure of the PETase enzyme and trained the model to generate mutations that work quickly at low temperatures.

"When considering approaches for waste disposal, you need an enzyme that can work in nature at ambient temperatures," said study co-author Hal Alper.

The algorithm ended up with an element called FAST-PETase, which can break down plastic in 24 hours at temperatures ranging from 30 to 50 degrees Celsius.

According to scientists, the production and use of the enzyme can be brought to an industrial level, providing an affordable way to process plastic waste. They added that the biological approach uses less energy and is more environmentally friendly than current large-scale polyethylene recycling methods.

"This work really demonstrates the power of bringing together different disciplines, from synthetic biology to chemical engineering to artificial intelligence," said University of Texas at Austin synthetic biology professor Andrew Ellington.
