The volume control in the UZCH, as a rule, is a conventional variable resistor. However, in high-quality equipment, it is desirable to take into account the psychophysical characteristics of human hearing - its sensitivity drops at lower and higher frequencies at low volume. This is represented by "equal loudness curves" (Fig. 40), showing what signal level is needed at different frequencies for the same subjective sensation of loudness. They correspond to the frequency response of a "thinly compensated" volume control, which does not reduce the "juiciness" of the sound when the volume is reduced.

Theory: volume and tone control

A diagram of a simple regulator, which was used in the VEF electro-acoustic unit, is shown in fig. 41.

Theory: volume and tone control

The input signal from various sources is fed through the X1-X1 connectors to dividers from resistors R5-R8, R0, providing approximately the same maximum amplitudes on the resistor R3 (this is the volume control). From the engine of this resistor, the signal is fed to the XNUMXH preamplifier.

The variable resistor has two taps, to which the correcting chains R6C2 and R7C3 are connected. In the upper position of the resistor slider according to the scheme (maximum volume), they have almost no effect, the capacitor C1 is closed, the frequency response is even. As the slider is moved down, the influence of the chains increases: capacitors C2 and C3 shunt the higher and middle frequencies of the audio spectrum, creating a relative boost in the lower frequencies. At the same time, the role of capacitor C1 is also enhanced, creating a "bypass" for higher frequencies and their corresponding rise. As a result, the frequency response of the regulator approximately corresponds to equal loudness curves.

Tone controls usually come down to attenuating or raising the higher and lower frequencies of the sound spectrum, in accordance with the nature of the transmitted program and the tastes of the listener. The controller circuit (of the same "VEF" unit) is shown in fig. 42, and its frequency response - in fig. 43.

The variable resistor R2 regulates the level of low frequencies (LF), while the middle and high frequencies are closed by capacitors C2, C3 and their level remains approximately constant. The C4R5C5 chain regulates the higher frequencies (HF), while the currents of medium and lower frequencies almost do not flow through this chain due to the capacitance of capacitors C4 and C5 increasing at these frequencies. Resistor R4 weakens the mutual influence of the regulators. The ratings of the parts depend on the output impedance of the preamplifier and the input impedance of the terminal.

It must be kept in mind that the described passive tone control introduces a noticeable overall signal attenuation of about 10 times, which is compensated by a corresponding increase in the UZCH gain. A regulator that practically does not attenuate the signal is obtained by including adjustment elements in the OOS circuit of the amplifier stage, which is quite common in ultrasonic circuitry.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Tibet to build gravitational wave detector 19.01.2017

Scientists at the National Astronomical Observatory of China are already developing the first telescope to detect gravitational waves, which will be called Ngari-1. It will be installed 30 kilometers south of the village of Shiquanhe in the Tibetan district of Ngari. The detector will be located at an altitude of 5250 meters above sea level.

After the commissioning of the first telescope, which is scheduled for 2021, it will observe and collect accurate data on gravitational waves in the Earth's Northern Hemisphere. After that, the construction of the Ngari-2 telescope will begin as part of the second phase of the project. The construction budget is estimated by the Chinese at US$19 million.

The main task that the Chinese government has set before scientists is to adapt the world's highest observatories for effective space exploration. The project will also involve employees of the Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology, as well as the Institute of High Energy Physics.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences intends to attract external specialists to study gravitational waves, offering them an annual salary of about 153 thousand US dollars. The detection of gravitational waves by the detectors of the LIGO gravitational observatory was one of the major events in the history of science.
