The continuous operation of the windshield wiper of a car with slight precipitation causes excessive driver fatigue and leads to useless wear of the brushes. A simple device will help make the wiper work periodically.

Wiper breaker

When the device is turned off (switch contacts S1 are open), the wiper operates, as usual, in one of two modes - slow motion of the brushes, or accelerated. When the device is turned on, the wiper blades perform one cycle of movement every 5 s; in this case, the windshield wiper switch located on the vehicle's instrument panel must be set to the Stop position.

The device is connected in parallel with the contacts of the wiper limit switch. When the wiper is switched to intermittent (cyclic) mode, the contacts of switch S1 are closed. Capacitor C2 charges quickly (through the motor), and capacitor C1 charges slowly (through resistor R2). After a few seconds, the voltage across the capacitor reaches approximately 1,8 V. This will open the transistor V2, followed by the trinistor V1. Since the open trinistor is connected in parallel to the open contacts of the limit switch, the rotor of the electric motor begins to rotate, setting the wiper blades in motion. The speed of the brushes corresponds to the accelerated mode of operation.

After several revolutions of the motor rotor, the contacts of the limit switch are closed, the capacitors are quickly discharged (C1 - through the diode V3), and the transistor V2 and the trinistor V1 are closed. At the end of the brush movement cycle (double stroke), the limit switch contacts open, the brushes stop, and the capacitors C1 and C2 are charged again - a new cycle of the device begins. Capacitor C2 protects the contacts of the limit switch from burning.

If the car is equipped with a two-speed brush movement device, such a breaker cannot be installed, but another one should be used.

When the contacts of switch S1 are closed, the normal wiper circuit is restored.

Replacing one resistor in the charging circuit of capacitor C1 with two, of which one is variable (R2), allows you to adjust the pause time between strokes of the brushes, depending on weather conditions. With the resistor values indicated on the diagram, this time can be changed within 3 ... 10 s.

Wiper motors draw a lot of current when starting up. Therefore, the load circuit of the trinistor V1 should be mounted with wires of a sufficiently large cross section, connecting them directly to the terminals of the trinistor, and not to the printed tracks of the board. Switch S1 must be rated for a current of at least 6 A.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Pheromones against crop pests 11.12.2022

The main harm to agriculture is caused by a butterfly called cotton scoop. It devours about 1/5 of all crops grown, but scientists from Lund University have figured out how to deal with it.

Female insects can attract mates in complete darkness without any sound signal and at a distance of hundreds of meters using sex pheromones.

Males track the smell of these chemical signals and mate with females, who then lay eggs. After that, hungry larvae hatch, destroying crops.

"We can use artificial pheromone compounds in the field that will spread all over the air and override the original signal from a real female," explained Hong-Lei Wang, a researcher on the pheromone group at Lund University in Sweden.

This sheer sheath of sexual odor makes it harder for males to find females and mate, and so the insect population is declining, meaning there are fewer pests in the area that can damage crops.

Experts have already isolated the necessary chemical elements from oilseeds and tested their development, comparing its effectiveness with synthetic pheromones that are used in agriculture.

Until now, the costs of these substances have limited their widespread use. The creation of artificial pheromones was quite expensive, so they were used only when it was cost-effective - for example, to protect fruits.

But now Wang and his colleagues have discovered a way to produce pheromones in an affordable and sustainable way. They also tested their development in the fields. Over time, the number of male cutworms in the territories treated with pheromones has significantly decreased. This indicates the high efficiency of the new method.
