The rain sensor shown in Figure 1 works as follows: when a raindrop falls between the plates E1, thereby connecting them. Through the plates and resistors R1 and R2, a negative potential enters the base of the transistor T1, thereby opening it. A positive potential flows through the emitter-collector junctions, which means that the device (electronic wiper motor) is triggered.

The sensitivity of the sensor depends on the distance between the plates. Resistor R2 selects the opening current of transistor T1.
Plates E1 are installed on the glass, on the working area of the wiper.
