When working together, photovoltaic systems and other power generators can meet a more diverse demand for electricity more conveniently and at a lower cost than either alone. When electricity is needed continuously or there are periods when more is needed than the photovoltaic array alone can produce, a generator can effectively supplement it. During the daytime, photovoltaic modules meet the daily energy requirement and charge the battery. When the battery is discharged, the motor-generator turns on and runs until the batteries are recharged.

In some systems, the generator makes up for the lack of energy when the electricity consumption exceeds the total capacity of the PV modules and batteries. Systems that use different types of power generators combine the advantages of each of them. The engine-generator generates electricity at any time of the day. As such, it provides an excellent backup power source for duplicating photovoltaic modules at night or on a stormy day depending on the whims of the weather. On the other hand, the photovoltaic module operates silently, requires no maintenance and does not emit pollutants into the atmosphere. The combined use of photovoltaic cells and generators can reduce the initial cost of the system. If there is no backup installation, the PV modules and batteries must be large enough to provide power at night.

However, using the motor generator as a standby means that fewer PV modules and batteries are required to meet the demand for electricity. The presence of a generator makes the design of the system more complex, but it is still fairly easy to manage. In fact, modern electronic control allows these systems to operate automatically. The controllers can be programmed to automatically switch to either generator or battery charging, or a combination of these functions.

In addition to the motor-generator, electricity from a wind turbine, a small hydroelectric power plant or another source can be used, thus forming a larger hybrid power plant.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

giant crystals 12.10.2000

Researchers from the Lawrence Laboratory in Livermore (USA) managed to grow huge crystals of potassium pyrophosphate.

The largest of the crystals has a volume of a quarter of a cubic meter and weighs 318 kilograms. It grew in a large tank, where a solution of potassium pyrophosphate evaporated at a temperature of 65 degrees Celsius. Molecules were deposited on a seed smaller than a thimble, and after 52 days a transparent giant grew with almost no defects in the crystal lattice.

The crystals will be used to build super-powerful lasers that are used in controlled nuclear fusion experiments.
