Sludge is burned in specialized fluidized bed recuperators. Exhaust gases in such boilers have a temperature of 850...900°C. Their heat is used to heat the blast air supplied to the boiler. In addition, low parameter steam is produced for heating and hot water purposes.

On fig. Figure 5.3 shows a sludge incineration plant widely used in Western Europe, manufactured by the French company Pyrofluid and modified for operating conditions in Russia by the Central Boiler and Turbine Institute. Such a plant was commissioned by the State Unitary Enterprise "Vodokanal of St. Petersburg" and is operated at the treatment plant "Bely Island".

Raw sludge, in which the dry matter content is about 4%, is dried due to the heat of the steam produced by the boiler, a flocculant is added to it, which promotes the formation of lumps. On centrifuges 2, produced with the participation of CJSC Kirovenergomash, the liquid phase is separated. The dehydrated sludge with a dry matter content of about 30% is supplied by a piston pump 1 with a pressure of up to 8 MPa to the furnace 3, which operates as a fluidized bed furnace. The hearth grate of the furnace is loaded with a layer of gravel. Air is supplied under the grate, pumped by blower 7 and heated in the regenerative heat exchangers of the steam boiler up to 600°C. The sludge is burned in a fluidized bed, the combustion products with a temperature of 850°C are sent to the waste heat boiler 5. The steam generated in the boiler is used for the needs of the enterprise's heat supply and partially for drying the raw sludge. Outgoing gases are cleaned from ash and toxic gas impurities in scrubber 6 and are additionally heated in a heat exchanger before being released into the atmosphere.

The capacity of the plant is 62 tons of dry matter per day. Gas burners are used to kindle the boiler. The installation is highly automated, the process parameters are fully controlled by a computer control complex. The commissioning of the plant made it possible to drastically reduce the storage of sewage sludge at landfills around the city, and the transportation of hundreds of tons of foul-smelling product through the city. The cleaned flue gases comply with the most stringent modern European standards. The air and water in the region have become cleaner. Waste from the incineration plant is finely dispersed mineral ash, which can be used for the production of bricks, concrete, and facing materials.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Mother's milk and career 11.01.2008

British sociologists from the University of Bristol, following the fate of 1400 children born in Bristol between 1937 and 1939, came to the conclusion that breastfeeding later reflects well on a child's career.

Of those who were breastfed in infancy, most have climbed the social ladder compared to their parents, and of the "artists" only half have achieved this. Moreover, the chances of success in life are higher, the longer the child was not weaned. Such differences are also noted within the same family: if one child was breast-fed, and the other with substitutes, then greater success in life, as a rule, awaits the first.

The reasons for this phenomenon are unclear, although it has been observed that naturally fed children have a slightly higher IQ.
