Photosynthesis of green plants allows accumulating the energy received from the sun's rays in organic matter, which is synthesized from carbon dioxide, water and some "biogenic" elements of the soil. Every year on Earth, photosynthesis forms about 120 billion tons of dry organic matter, which is energetically equivalent to 40 billion tons of oil (more than 10 times the world level of its consumption).

The chemical energy stored by plants can be used as energy. In general, biomass provides one seventh of the fuel consumed in the world. The energy obtained from biomass is 4 times greater than the total energy of nuclear power plants in the world.

In the countries of the European Union, the share of biomass energy in the total renewable energy production is 55%. The most efficient biomass energy is used in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy. The total biomass resources in Western Europe (in million tons of dry matter per year) are: wood and wood waste - 150, agricultural waste - 250, urban waste - 75, biomass grown specifically on energy plantations - 250 million tons.

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Effect of stress on brain structure 24.07.2023

Recent research by cell biology and anatomy professor Xi-Kwong Jun Liu of Louisiana State University New Orleans reveals the impact of stress on brain structure. These results highlight potential therapeutic targets in the prevention and treatment of related pathologies.

In a mouse study, Liu and her team found that a single stressful event causes rapid and lasting changes in astrocytes, the brain cells responsible for clearing waste products from the brain.

Stressors lead to detachment of the ends of astrocytes from synapses, which serve to transfer information between neurons.

In addition, the researchers have identified the mechanism that underlies these changes. They found that during a stressful event, the hormone norepinephrine suppresses the molecular pathway responsible for the production of the GluA1 protein, which is essential for communication between nerve cells and astrocytes.
