Widely used fluorescent lamps are not without drawbacks: during their operation, the buzz of the throttle is heard, the power system has a starter that is unreliable in operation, and most importantly, the lamp has a filament that can burn out, due to which the lamp has to be replaced with a new one.

Fluorescent lamps

On fig. 1 shows a scheme that eliminates the listed disadvantages. There is no usual buzz, the lamp lights up instantly, there is no unreliable starter, and, most importantly, you can use a lamp with a burnt filament.

Capacitors C1, C4 must be paper, with an operating voltage of 1,5 times the supply voltage. Capacitors C2, C3 are desirable to be mica.

Resistor R1 must be wire-wound, according to the lamp power indicated in the table.

Table 1
Lamp power C1-C4 C2-C3 D1-D4 R1
Tues uF pf Om
30 4 3300 D226B 60
40 10 6800 D226B 60
80 20 6800 D205 30
100 20 6800 D231 30

Diodes D2, D3 and capacitors C1, C4 represent a full-wave rectifier with voltage doubling. The values of the capacitances C1, C4 determine the operating voltage of the lamp L1 (the larger the capacitance, the greater the voltage on the electrodes of the lamp L1). At the moment of switching on, the voltage at points a and b reaches 600 V, which is applied to the electrodes of the L1 lamp. At the moment the lamp L1 is ignited, the voltage at points a and b decreases and ensures the normal operation of the lamp L1, designed for a voltage of 220 V.

The use of diodes D1, D4 and capacitors C2, C3 increases the voltage to 900 V, which ensures reliable ignition of the lamp L1 at the moment of switching on. Capacitors C2, C3 simultaneously contribute to the suppression of radio interference.

Lamp L1 can work without D1, D4, C2, C3, but the reliability of switching on decreases.

The data of the circuit elements, depending on the power of the fluorescent lamps, are given in the table.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The brain of boys and girls reacts differently to stress 18.11.2016

Dr. Victor Carrion of Stanford University and his colleagues found that stress affects the brains of boys and girls differently. Significant differences were found in an area called the islet of Reil, which is responsible for the perception of body signals, as well as emotions and empathy.

Some young people exposed to stress subsequently sink into a condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while others do not. People with this disorder may be haunted by painful memories - they try to avoid contact with people, places, things associated with a stressful situation. They may have trouble communicating, sleeping, and concentrating.

Previous studies have shown that girls are, on average, more at risk of developing PTSD than boys, but scientists have not been able to determine why.

The authors of the new study conducted MRI scans of the brains of 59 volunteers aged 9-17 years. Thirty girls and boys between the ages of 14 and 16 had episodes of psychological trauma, while twenty-nine others made up the control group. All participants in the experiment had a similar age and IQ. Among the traumatized participants, five experienced one stressful event, while the remaining twenty-five experienced two or more episodes or were chronically stressed.

The researchers found no difference in brain structure between boys and girls in the control group. However, among injured boys and girls, they saw differences in a part of the islet of Reil called the anterior sulcus. This area of the brain had more volume and surface area in boys with trauma. At the same time, the volume of the same region was smaller in girls with trauma than in girls from the control group.

"It is very important that people who work with traumatized youth take into account gender differences. Our results show that it is possible that boys and girls may have different symptoms of trauma and that they may benefit from different therapies," she said. Megan Klabunde, co-author of the study.

The islet of Reil usually changes during childhood and adolescence. A decrease in the volume of this zone, as a rule, is considered a sign of growing up. Thus, the obtained data mean that traumatic stress can lead to premature sexual development of girls.
