A candidate for the leadership of one of the tribes in Brazil himself determines the day of his own death. The elders of the tribe lead him to the seashore, blindfold him, after which he must take a handful of coarse sea pebbles with one hand. The number of pebbles a person can capture is how much a person will have to reign. When the time comes to an end, the servants present their leader with a cup of poison. At the moment of burial of the remains of the former leader, the elders lead the new candidate to the sea.

The writer O. Henry became famous precisely because of Christmas. Then he bore the name William Sidney Porter, or rather, he did not have a name then, but had the number 34 627 and was a prisoner in one of the American prisons. He still had a daughter at large, to whom he really wanted to give something for Christmas. Naturally, the prisoner had no money, and he decided to try his luck. He wrote a story and sent it to one of the magazines. And the Miracle did not take long to arrive - the story was published in the Christmas issue, and the person who wrote it and signed O. Henry (this is the first name that came to his mind) received a fee, and subsequently fame. Well, the little daughter, of course, was not left without a gift that Christmas.

In Great Britain, Christmas cake is a table decoration. According to an old recipe, it should be filled with the following items that supposedly predict fate for the coming year: a ring - for a wedding, a coin - for wealth, a small horseshoe - for good luck. christmas.ru/ info_christm .htm

In Ancient Rus' there was a whole system of considerations, based mainly on what day the feast of the Nativity of Christ falls. If the Nativity of Christ happens in a week, winter will be dissolved, spring will be wet, summer will be dry, autumn will be windy, joy will howl, fruit will be abundant, four-legged animals will be plentiful, honey will be plentiful - destruction will befall the young.

In Scotland, the last handful of bread harvested in the summer is saved and distributed on Christmas morning to horses and cows to protect them from illness for the year.

Spanish inventors Eduardo Segura and Andris Diaz decided three years ago that their dogs deserve the same comfort as people who have the opportunity to splash around in a jacuzzi, take a shower or go to a sauna. Using this principle, Segura and Diaz came up with a washing machine that washes, rinses and dries pets (dogs and cats) in less than thirty minutes. The inventors created the company Lavakan, which translates as dog wash. The car has the same name. The heyday of Kuznetsky Most as a center for trade in foreign goods, however, was the twenties. In 1821, the panorama of Paris was a huge success here, delighting Muscovites and attracting so many visitors that entrepreneurs collected 2 thousand a week.

In the first half of the last century, on the Kuznetsky Bridge in the morning hours one could observe the most extraordinary sight: a line of elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen sweeping the street under the supervision of the police. These street sweepers were forced to violate police rules and were required to sweep the streets as a punitive measure. To make the punishment more sensitive, the police forced fashionistas to take revenge on Moscow fashion street. Around the high-society janitors, their gentlemen usually hung around with sweets and flowers. Old Moscow. KUZNETSKY BRIDGE (telegraph.ru/ misc/moskow/msk38.htm)

The first award of the honorary title Mother Heroine was made by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 27, 1944. Among the fourteen women awarded the title of Mother Heroine by this Decree, the Order of Mother Heroine No. 1 was awarded to Anna Savelyevna Aleksakhina, a resident of the village of Mamontovka, Moscow Region, who raised 12 children. During the war, eight of her sons went to the front, four of them died. Order No. 1 was awarded to her in the Kremlin on November 1, 1944. According to some unverified data, they wanted to give the first number of the Mother Heroine Order to a communist woman. However, no members of the CPSU were found among the candidates for the high rank. I had to present Order No. 1 to the non-party Aleksakhina. She lived in some kind of barracks. When the authorities came from Moscow to meet with the mother of many children, the day before furniture was delivered from the district committee to her barracks. After the commission left, the furniture was taken back to the district committee. In total, about 500.000 women were awarded the Order of Mother Heroine. Any of us knows very well that one snowflake is practically weightless: it is enough to place your palm under the falling snowball. Indeed, an ordinary snowflake weighs about a milligram (very rarely you come across individuals weighing 2-3 milligrams). But billions of weightless snowflakes can even affect the speed of the Earth's rotation. In August alone, during the period of least snow on the Earth, when 8,7% of the entire surface of the planet is covered with snow, the snow cover weighs 7400 billion tons. And by the end of winter in the northern hemisphere, the mass of seasonal snow reaches 13.500 billion tons. But snow affects the Earth not only by its weight. Snow cover reflects almost 90% of the sun's radiant energy into space. Snow-free land reflects only 10, maximum 20%. A blanket of snow on an entire Earth scale significantly contributes to the cooling of the planet, as it isolates vast areas from the sun's rays for a long time.

The world's first mass-produced household robot vacuum cleaner, Trilobite, cleans your home independently and charges its batteries. It took the Swedes from Electrolux exactly 100 years to turn the world's first vacuum cleaner into an autonomous robot. The robot vacuum cleaner navigates in space just like a bat - using ultrasound: an acoustic locator covered with a thin gold plate with a large number of microphones picks up vibrations at a frequency of 60 thousand Hz, and the semicircular shape gives the robot a viewing angle of 180 degrees.
The maximum cleaning speed is 40 square centimeters per second. Whereas a person with a vacuum cleaner actually removes dust from only 60% of the available area, Trilobite covers 95%. MEMBRANE | Robot vacuum cleaner: arrived without dust (membrana.ru/ articles/technic/ 2002/01/10/190800 .html)

FOCL data transmitted over a record distance 13.07.2015

Scientists from the University of California at San Diego, with the assistance of researchers from Qualcomm, have come up with a solution to one of the main problems of fiber optic networks - signal distortion over long distances.

In modern networks, one fiber optic cable can accommodate from 30 to 200 data transmission channels using different frequencies. As the distance increases, signals in different channels begin to overlap each other, resulting in data loss. In order to avoid this, telecommunications operators install complex and expensive repeaters over certain distances.

Researchers have found a way to get rid of repeaters and thereby reduce the cost of building fiber optic networks. They themselves speak of their achievement as overcoming the "biggest limits" of fiber optic networks.

Layering of signals in a fiber optic cable occurs according to known laws. The essence of the researchers' invention is to pre-configure the signals in such a way that subsequent distortions are leveled.

The system created by scientists is based on the principle of a frequency comb. As soon as the frequency of one of the signals changes, it synchronizes the frequencies of the other signals. Thus, they are constantly at a certain distance from each other in the frequency spectrum.
In addition, the system allows you to decrypt the data at the receiving end, even if they were superimposed on each other.

"Today's fiber optic systems are like quicksand. The more you resist in the quicksand, the more you sink into it," said research leader Nikola Alic. "In fiber, after a certain point, the more power you add to the signal, the more distortion you get. This makes it difficult to transmit a signal over a long distance."

In their experiment, the researchers used a fiber optic cable with five channels. They were able to achieve distortion-free data transmission over a record distance of 12 thousand kilometers without the use of repeaters. The scientists believe their method can be scaled to more channels.
