Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Physical education doesn't work for everyone. 12.07.2011

Sports medicine specialists from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, collected 175 volunteers - men and women aged 40 to 67 who had never been involved in fitness, and divided them into four groups.

The first group trained muscle strength twice a week for 21 weeks, the second did endurance exercises, the third combined both types of exercises, the fourth (control) lived calmly, without physical education. Before and after the experiment, the participants measured the strength of the leg muscles and the uptake of oxygen by the blood.

The results were very different. The physical condition of some trainees improved greatly, but others even worsened. Thus, changes in muscle strength in different individuals ranged from minus 12 to plus 87%, and oxygen uptake fell by 8% or increased by 42%. A possible explanation is genetic differences between people.
