When installing an irrigation system in a garden plot or in a garden, many problems arise when it is necessary to bend a metal tube. Meanwhile. it is not too difficult to assemble a simple machine (see figure) for bending aluminum, copper and thin-walled steel tubes with an outer diameter of up to 20 mm.

The base (2) of such a machine is a massive board made of dense wood with dimensions of 240x200x40 mm. On one of its corners (on the right in the figure) at a distance of 76 mm from the edges on the axis (bolt with a diameter of 12 mm), a metal roller 3 with a diameter of 100 - 130 mm and a thickness of 20 - 25 mm is strengthened. It can also be carved from dense wood, preferably oak.

Arm 5 made of steel strip (250x20x5 mm) rotates freely around the roller axis. A rotating metal roller 6 is fixed on it. And a handle 8 is attached to the end. In the upper left corner of the base 2, a wooden rail-stop 6 is attached with two M4 bolts. A groove 3 mm deep is machined around the circumference of rollers 6 and 10.

Since in amateur practice the need for bending tubes arises from case to case, there is no need to manufacture a durable, and therefore relatively bulky machine base. It is enough to firmly clamp the board into a metalwork vise 1.

To bend the tube, you need to pull the lever 5 until the roller touches the stop 4, insert the tube 3 into the groove between the rollers 6 and 7 and bend it to the required angle by turning the lever.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

conservative mind 25.08.2015

A fashionable topic today is the study of the psychological characteristics of liberals and conservatives. And scientists always learn something unpleasant about conservatives: either they are more prone to self-deception than liberals, or they are more timid ...

Well, it’s true, it recently turned out that both conservatives and liberals read mainly like-minded people on social networks, but for various reasons they don’t see and don’t want to see the opinions of the opposite side. In fairness, let's talk about a study in which conservatives were "better" than liberals.

In fact, there were three studies - at two Midwestern universities and on the Internet, through a survey; the latter was attended by volunteers from all over the United States. The results of the research team led by Joshua Clarkson of the University of Cincinnati presented in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA.

Participants in the first two experiments saw on a computer screen the names of colors (red, blue, green, yellow) on a colored background that did not match the word - for example, "yellow" could be written on a blue background. Participants had to press the spacebar the moment they identified a word. With this elementary task, the conservatives completed faster, which indicates their better ability to concentrate. In the third experiment, participants were given a seven-letter word and had to make as many English words out of it as they could, while they themselves decided when to finish the work.

Conservatives have been working on anagrams longer than liberals. But what is interesting is that the participants in this study were divided into two groups: those who believed that a person’s willpower, his personal responsibility for the result improves self-control, and those who believed that, on the contrary, it worsens. Before testing, each group was given an abstract of a fictitious scientific article to read, confirming their beliefs in this regard. So, in the first group, the conservatives showed the best results, and in the second - the liberals.

Obviously, a healthy society needs both liberals and conservatives. Openness to novelty, readiness to work in any situation, under the influence of any unaccounted for factors are necessary, but faith in diligence that overcomes everything is also a useful quality. Both in personal life and in society.
