Ancient Greek myths tell about the struggle of the Thunderer Zeus with his father - the god Kronos (Kronos). Zeus was supported in battle by his brothers and sisters, as well as one-eyed giants, the cyclops. With Kron, the gods-titans fought side by side. Zeus threw hundreds of thunders and sparkling lightnings at them.

The Olympian gods, led by Zeus, won. However, the goddess of the earth Gaia was dissatisfied with the outcome of this truly titanic battle - after all, Kron was her own son. She sent the giant hundred-headed dragon Typhon to Zeus. His body was covered with stone-hard feathers that bounced off arrows. Instead of legs, Typhon had the tails of huge snakes. Three moiras, the goddesses of fate, helped Zeus defeat this monster. They cut the thread of the dragon's life. Typhon immediately wilted. Zeus took off all his heads with one blow. However, the dragon was so powerful that the life did not immediately leave his body. He was still scratching with his paws and belching fire. To bury the monster, Zeus piled a huge mountain on him.

Fascinating story, you say. For the inhabitants of ancient Greece, it was true. In confirmation of their correctness, they would say that they know this mountain very well. It is located on the east coast of Sicily and is called Etoia. The smoke from Typhon's dying breath still curls above her. The words about smoke are true. After all, Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. Its exact height is difficult to name. It changes from eruption to eruption. The snow cap of Etna rises above the level of the Mediterranean Sea above the mark of 3300 meters. Snow adorns the top of the volcano intermittently. It melts during eruptions.

One of the strong eruptions occurred in 396 BC. e. Then the lava flows stopped the army of the Carthaginians, who landed in Messina and went to Catania, heading towards Syracuse. In 44 BC. e. the volcano "puffed" so hard that a cloud of ejected ash flew to Rome and eclipsed the sky over this city. In the 1614th century, Etna erupted continuously for ten whole years - from 1621 to 4. The last strong eruption occurred relatively recently - September 2007, 200. In total, over the past two millennia, Etna has erupted about XNUMX times. To be convinced of the lively volcanic character of Etna, one does not have to wait a whole century. There are several hundred small side craters on the slopes of Etna. At the same time, once every three months, lava pours out of one or the other!

Volcanologists studying the behavior of Etna warn: the character of the volcano is deteriorating, becoming more and more aggressive. It is possible that a major eruption will soon occur. Tourists ignore these warnings and continue to climb the slopes of Etna. Who does not count every coin in his pocket, comfortably rides on an SUV or rises in a cable car. Thrifty people travel by regular bus. It runs once a day from the nearest town of Catania. The very one that was almost completely destroyed as a result of an eruption that occurred in 122 BC. e. The Roman Senate then, in order to help the victims, decided to save the inhabitants of the slopes of Etna for ten years from paying taxes.

Extreme lovers climb Mount Etna themselves. On foot straight ahead, overlooking the side craters along the way. There is no single reliable path. Etna, like an Italian fashionista, regularly changes the style of her lava hat.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The age of the solid core in the center of the Earth is determined 09.02.2019

Earth's magnetosphere extends far into space and deflects most of the high-energy particles that would otherwise bombard our planet's surface, rendering it virtually uninhabitable. Geomagnetism arises deep in the bowels of the Earth, where a solid iron-nickel core is located, heated to almost 5500 ° C. It is surrounded by a thicker and more liquid outer core, the material of which continuously cools and settles, building up solid layers in the center. This causes the conductive hot alloy liquid core to stir and create a geomagnetic field.

Once the earth's core was heated more strongly, it remained entirely liquid and seethed, generating a magnetic field. However, its temperature gradually decreased, mixing slowed down, and the magnetosphere weakened to a level dangerous for life on the planet. Fortunately, at some point, a solid core began to form in its center, which gave the Earth's "magnetic dynamo" a new strength. Various models place the event between 0,5 and 2,5 billion years ago, but a new study by geologists led by University of Rochester professor John Tarduno puts the date fairly accurately at 565 million years ago.

Indeed, the core of the Earth remains inaccessible to direct research, however, all changes in the global magnetic field are imprinted in the orientation of the particles of certain minerals. Scientists analyzed it in crystalline pyroxenes and spars found under the town of Sept-Iles in Quebec, Canada and dated to 550-600 million years old. The crystals showed that in that era the magnetosphere was going through hard times, weakening and changing polarity ten times faster than it happens in the modern era. However, from a certain moment the process stopped and suddenly began to develop in a completely different direction. The magnetic field began to intensify.

Interestingly, this time coincides with the end of the Ediacaran period, which culminated in one of the global extinctions of the biosphere: judging by the data of Tarduno and his colleagues, it could well be caused by the weakening of the magnetosphere. By the way, some previous data also pointed to this. The subsequent restoration and strengthening of the magnetic field coincided with the next important stage in the evolution of life - the Cambrian explosion of biodiversity, during which the ancestors of all modern animal types appeared. Perhaps it was the increased bombardment of the planet by cosmic radiation that contributed to the survival and development of new life forms - mobile, capable of going to the depth of water, or well protected by a shell or exoskeleton.
