Icebergs of Ilulissat. Nature miracle

When you look at the geographical map of the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth, Greenland stands out on it as a large white spot. Not because it has not been studied. It's just that this largest island in the northern half of our planet is almost completely covered in ice and snow. The exceptions are the coasts, where the grass here and there is green in summer.

Icebergs of Ilulissat
Icebergs of Ilulissat

To get to know the geography of Greenland closer, you can use the computer program "Planet Earth". It shows parts of our planet taken from space. At first, the impression is almost the same as from a geographical map - white ice and snow all around. Then, when you zoom in on the image, you notice small clusters of squares. This is how the pictures taken by travelers are marked. Some cluster in the southwest of the island around the town of Nuuk. This is the capital of Greenland, which is considered an autonomous territory of Denmark, but in fact belongs to the local population - the Eskimos.

The second cluster of images is located higher, but also belongs to the western coast of the island near the town of Ilulissat. It is the third largest settlement in Greenland. It is located 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Life here is typically Greenlandic - for every couple of local residents (and there are less than 5 thousand people) there is a sled dog. You can't drive around here by car. A long and rather wide white ribbon is clearly visible near the town. This is the Sermek-Kujallek glacier and Icefjord.

Icefjord (literally translated as "ice fjord") is almost completely clogged with ice that slides from this glacier. The width of the glacier is decent - about 5 kilometers. The speed of movement towards the sea is huge - 19 meters per day. It turns out a kind of giant transport ice belt, which annually dumps about 20 million tons of ice into the sea. Not surprisingly, Sermek-Kujallek is rightfully considered one of the most powerful glaciers outside of Antarctica. The length of this stone gut is about 40 kilometers! Only closer to the sea do individual ice mountains break off and float freely. They are very large, and from space they look like white rectangles and polyhedra.

Tourists from all over the world come to see this wonder. Small ships scurrying between huge icebergs resemble children's toys. At the same time, one must also remember that only a small part of the ice mountains remains above the water. Their draft is so deep that some, when leaving the fjord, to the delight of travelers, run aground and anchor for a long time on the beam of Ilulissat. They are the main attraction of the city. It is no coincidence that its name in translation from the Eskimo language means iceberg.

The Sermek-Kujallek glacier and Icefjord are so unique that in 2004 UNESCO added them to the list of World Heritage Sites. Tours are taken to the glacier. But you can ride the fjord on a ship and even come close to one of the icebergs on it. Just dress warmly beforehand. Greenland is not the tropics.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Fujitsu Stylistic V535 Fully Rugged Industrial Business Tablet 06.03.2015

Fujitsu has unveiled the Fujitsu Stylistic V535, a fully rugged, industrial-grade business tablet. The Stylistic V535 is rugged, water, vibration, and scratch resistant, designed to work in environments unacceptable for consumer-grade tablets, and is resistant to liquids, dust, shock, and even 1,8 meter drops (included) with optional rigid frame).

In addition to a durable case, the new tablet has a wide functionality. Fujitsu has opted for a full-featured Microsoft Windows 8.1 operating system and the latest quad-core Atom processor to provide businesses with native support for Windows business applications. What's more, the ruggedized tablet features enterprise-class communications with an optional built-in broadband device that supports 4G/LTE networks and GPS and GLONASS global navigation systems.

Stylistic V535 is designed for use in industries such as aviation, warehousing and logistics; it supports NFC technology, which offers a way to track inventory without having to scan barcodes. Contactless authentication allows users to log in without even removing gloves or other protective equipment. In addition, the Stylistic V535 tablet is capable of operating in a wider temperature range from -10°C to +50°C.

The novelty is equipped with a bright multi-touch display Stylistic V535, which can be operated even with gloves, and tempered glass Gorilla Glass 3. The battery works in normal mode without recharging for about 8 hours and can be replaced by the user if necessary.

Fujitsu's Smart Shell concept allows customers to embed tablets in specialized industrial environments. This concept offers a range of user-replaceable cases that allow the Stylistic to be easily integrated into your work environment by simply mounting on a three-way swivel arm. The Smart Shell with Hexmount option allows the device to be permanently mounted for logistics use, while the Smart Shell with Smart Card Reader provides secure hardware identification and authentication.
