Brightly colored, of various sizes and designs, designed for different numbers of people, water bikes bring a lot of pleasure to vacationers. Already in some places they are talking about organizing competitions for water cyclists. Why not? After all, water skiing has already won a strong place in the sport.

The water bike (see picture) is simple, reliable and light. The basis for it is the frame of a children's bicycle.

From four dry pine boards smoothly planed with a section of 20x120x2400 mm, cut out, as shown in the figure, the "cheeks" of the floats 1. Connect them on casein glue and small studs with spacers, and put bosses on the ends. From the bottom of the bottom of the floats, also on glue and nails, cover with a sheet of plywood 3 mm thick and 300x2500 mm in size.

Lubricate the grooves from the inside with plenty of glue and seal with strips of fabric. When the glue dries, putty the joints of the plywood with the "cheeks" and cover with oil paint.

After 1-2 days, as soon as the paint dries well, strengthen the deck with glue and nails. Make it from a sheet of plywood 3 mm thick and 300x2400 mm in size. From pine bars, as shown in the figure, make a frame 2 and fix it on the floats with squares 3 and 4. Stretch marks 5 firmly connect the bicycle frame to the frame of the floats. Cut out the steering wheel feather 6 from a sheet of millimetric steel, solder the axle to it and insert it into the front fork. Then proceed with the installation of the drive. To do this, put the paddle wheel 8 on the shaft 9 and mount it with the gear sprocket 13 using the bushing 11 and rivets 10 and 12. Then install the bearing 7 in place at the rear of the floats, at a distance that is determined by the length of the chain. Having fixed the bearings with bastings 14 and 15 from metal strips (pieces of hoops) to the float frame, tighten the M8x30 bolts with M8 nuts (16, 17).

After checking the correctness of the assembly, turn the drive pedals several times. After that, having soaked all the wooden surfaces with boiling drying oil, paint the bike with oil paints in the colors that you like.

From thin boards of 10x50x1340 mm, smoothly planed and processed with fine sandpaper, make a footboard on the left side. You don't need to paint it.

Artificial eyelashes controlled by magnet and light 07.06.2020

Researchers from North Carolina State University and Elon University (USA) have created artificial cilia, or hair-like structures, that can change shape in response to a magnetic field and then return to their original shape when exposed to an appropriate light source. The development will find application in soft robotics, according to the press service of the University of North Carolina.

Artificial eyelashes are made of thermoplastic polyurethane, in which microparticles of magnetic iron are "sewn up". The most important thing about these structures is that they have shape memory, that is, any shape that the cilia takes can be fixed and then “removed” with the help of light to get a new one.

The cilia are actuated by a magnet, but they are not pulled towards the magnet, but rotate and align with the magnetic field from the permanent magnet. In the researchers' previous work, the magnet also powers soft robots, but it pulls the robot along with it - and thereby powers the robot. The new approach offers another tool for the development of soft robots.

The scientists have also developed a theoretical model that allows users to predict how shape memory magnetic cilia will react when actuated. In addition, the model explains why, in a particular case, the cilia react in this way and not otherwise.
