Aralia heart-shaped (udo), Aralia cordata Thunb. Classification, synonyms, botanical description, nutritional value, cultivation

Aralia heart-shaped (udo)

Synonyms: A. edulis Sieb. et Zucc, Dimorphanthus edulis Mig., aralia racemosa var. sachalinensis Miyabe. Aralia heart-shaped.

Perennial herbaceous plant, up to 125 cm high; with a simple unbranched stem, glabrous or hairy-pubescent when young. The root is fragrant, thick, fleshy.

Leaves are large, up to 50 cm long, long-petiolate, doubly or thrice pinnately compound, of unpaired 3-5 lower compound lobes, consisting of 3-5 (7) leaflets and 2-3 pairs of simple leaflets in the upper part of the leaf; leaflets on short (1,5-5(10) mm long) petioles, up to 20 cm long and 9-12 cm wide, oblong-ovate or almost elliptical, apical mostly wide, with a rounded truncated or heart-shaped, often unequal-sided base , gradually pointed upwards and elongated into pointed points, dark green above, glabrous or sometimes rather densely pubescent with bristly hairs, lighter below, pubescent along the veins, with serrated edges.

The inflorescence is large, up to 45-55 cm long, paniculate, apical, sometimes with an addition in the form of small additional inflorescences and simple brushes of 5-9 umbels emerging from the axils of the upper leaves. In the apical inflorescence bisexual flowers, and in the additional and extreme umbrellas of the main inflorescence - staminate. The axes of the inflorescence are densely pubescent with yellow curly hairs. Petals triangular-oval, sometimes almost lanceolate, about 2,5 mm long.

The fruits are black, small, 3-4 mm in diameter. Roots and bleached young seedlings are eaten.

There are two varieties of udo: Kanoudo and Moyaschi oudo. The first is propagated by both seeds and root cuttings; the other - only by root cuttings (common in vegetable gardens located on the slopes of Fujiyama volcano).

Aralia heart-shaped (udo)

There is another type of edible udo - A. continentalis Kitgawa (A. cordata Komarov), very similar to the previous one.

However, it reaches a lower height (up to 1 m), its main inflorescence is more dense and branched; fruits are black-blue, 4-6 mm in diameter, with 5-6 seeds.

It is used for food in the same way as the previous species.

A perennial plant from the Araliaceae family Stilbocarpa polaris Decai grows on Auckland and Campbell Islands. 1 P.I. with fleshy sweet roots that are eaten.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Aralia cordata, also known as udo (Aralia cordata), is a perennial plant native to Japan and Korea, and is used as a food item.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing Aralia heart-shaped:

Cultivation:

  • Aralia heart-shaped prefers sunny places or light partial shade and fertile soils with a good drainage system.
  • Plants can be grown from seeds or cuttings.
  • Plant the plants at a depth of 5-10 cm and at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other in spring or autumn.
  • Aralia heart-shaped needs regular watering and top dressing, especially during periods of growth.

Workpiece:

  • Aralia cordate is used as a food product.
  • The young shoots of the plant, called udo, have a pleasantly sweet flavor and are used as an ingredient in salads, appetizers, and other dishes.
  • Young shoots are harvested in May-June, when they reach a length of 30-40 cm and have a diameter of about 1-2 cm.
  • The shoots must be cleaned of leaves and cut into pieces before use.

Storage:

  • Young shoots of Aralia heart-shaped are best used immediately after harvest, as they quickly lose their taste and aroma.
  • If you want to keep the udo longer, you can freeze the sprouts after cutting or salt them in the marinade.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Inexpensive dense 3D memory 10.07.2012

Applied Materials announced an important development in the field of flash memory manufacturing - the creation of a new semiconductor etching system that allows the formation of three-dimensional structures that provide higher data density per unit area and volume.

The new system, called the Applied Centura Avatar, allows the creation of flash memory chips with up to 64 vertical levels, according to the company's press service. We are talking about NAND memory - the most popular type of memory in modern mobile electronics, including smartphones and tablets. The same type of memory is used in SSDs, which are equipped with ultrabooks that are gaining popularity.

The company says the new manufacturing technology solves many of the problems that vendors who are interested in making 3D chips face. Meanwhile, multilayer chips already exist - in them, ready-made layers are superimposed on each other. In the case of Centura Avatar, we are talking about the manufacture of a three-dimensional structure from the very beginning, Applied Materials emphasized.

According to the information provided, the new technology allows significant savings to be achieved. For example, when using 3D NAND memory, the transition from 100nm to 60nm process technology can reduce manufacturing costs by almost 10 times.

The company did not say when the 3D chips that Centura Avatar allows you to create will be found in commercial devices. Partly due to the fact that the equipment for the production of such microcircuits is still very expensive.

Applied Materials is an international company with offices in the US, Canada, China, Europe, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The company employs about 12,9 thousand employees. In addition to the semiconductor industry, it specializes in display equipment, solar panels and automation software.
