Yarrow ageratovy

Perennial herbaceous plant of the Compositae family.

Numerous (20-35) stems are erect, slightly ribbed, branching in the upper half. The leaves are simple, sessile, elliptical in shape, 2,5-6 cm long and 11,5 cm wide with serrated edges, pale green in color, covered with dotted glands.

Small yellow flowers in small baskets are collected at the ends of branches in corymbose inflorescences with a diameter of 3-5 cm.

Blooms in June-July. Fruits in August. The fruit is an oblong-ovoid compressed achene.

Yarrow is undemanding to heat, winters well and is not damaged by frost during spring regrowth, which begins in March. Drought tolerant and moisture tolerant.

Grows best on light loamy and sandy soils, preferring open, well-lit areas.

Yarrow ageratovy has a pleasant herbaceous-coniferous smell with strong spicy and fruity tones.

Its aroma is due to the presence of essential oil in it, which has high antiseptic properties. It is found in all above-ground parts of the plant, but most of all in inflorescences and much less in leaves and stems. Its essential oil is used in the food and cosmetic industry.

Cultivation. The soil for cultivation is prepared in the fall. After harvesting the predecessor, the earth is loosened to a depth of 4-6 cm, after 2 weeks it is dug up to a depth of 20-25 cm, at the same time 30-40 g of superphosphate, 10-15 g of potassium salt and 10-15 g of ammonium nitrate per 1 m2 are added.

Yarrow ageratovy propagates by seeds and vegetatively - by dividing densely. It is better to use the seedling method of cultivation, since the seeds of the yarrow are very small.

Seedlings are grown on ridges during autumn sowing. The seeds are rolled with a light roller or sprinkled with humus with a layer of 0,5 cm. After the appearance of 3-4 pairs of leaves, the seedlings can be transplanted to a permanent place of cultivation.

Seedlings or parts of bushes are planted in autumn or spring at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other, and between rows - 60-70 cm. 10-12 days after this, the aisles are loosened. In the future, the soil is loosened and cleaned of weeds. Plants should be watered as needed.

In the second and subsequent years of plant life in early spring, at the beginning of regrowth, row spacing is loosened with the simultaneous introduction of 15-70 g of ammonium nitrate. Further care for yarrow is the same as in the first year of cultivation.

In autumn, the aisles are loosened annually to a depth of 12-15 cm, 20-30 g of superphosphate, 10-15 g of potassium salt per 1 m2 are applied.

Harvesting of green mass is carried out during the period of mass flowering. With seed propagation, the crop is harvested starting from the second year of life, and with vegetative propagation, in the year of planting.

Cut off the top of flowering plants. To obtain essential oil, raw materials are processed fresh; when harvesting for the future, it is dried in the shade under a canopy or in a well-ventilated area.

Store dried raw materials in canvas or paper bags in a cool, dry place.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Giant accumulations of turbulent gas discovered in distant galaxies 04.09.2017

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) reports that researchers have found turbulent clumps of cold gas around distant starburst galaxies.

The observations were carried out using the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) system of millimeter and submillimeter radio telescopes. In the course of the work, scientists discovered CH + molecules for the first time, which opens up a new direction for studying the critical epoch of star formation in the Universe.

"CH + is a special molecule. It requires a lot of energy to form, in addition, it is very chemically active, which means that it must be short-lived and unable to be transported over long distances. Therefore, the presence of CH + allows us to trace the trajectories of energy flows inside galaxies and in their vicinity", the researchers say.

These observations suggest that the energy is transported by giant galaxy-sized winds and then converted into turbulent motions occurring within previously unobserved reservoirs of cold gas around galaxies.

The observed CH+ emission indicates the presence of dense shock waves generated by hot and fast-moving galactic winds, which in turn form in star-forming regions within galaxies.

"These winds push material out of the galaxy as they move through the galaxy, but due to their own turbulent motions, some of this material is recaptured by the galaxy's gravitational pull and forms giant turbulent reservoirs of cold rarefied gas," says ESO.

It is expected that the results of the study will help to better understand the evolution of galaxies.
