Oregano. Legends, myths, history

Oregano common

Oregano is a love herb. Its main use is in a variety of potions that are associated with the manipulation of human feelings.

Oregano is used not only as a medicine for sexual problems, but also as a magical plant that can influence the intimate sphere of people's lives and change it in the necessary direction. But, there are some nuances here.

Many say that this plant has a patron goddess - Aphrodite, who, according to mythology, is the goddess of love and beauty. Oregano acts as a strengthener of already existing relationships. That is, if you want to strengthen an already existing union, tie your current chosen one even more to yourself, then oregano is always at your service.

Oregano acts carefully and reasonably - it does not make men impotent, and women frigid, it is not part of lapel potions. It allows a person to re-evaluate what he has and make a logical choice. And, therefore, oregano can rather be attributed not to Aphrodite, but to Hera, as the patroness of faithful friends and wives.

The oldest is the legend of Zeus.

When Kronos dethroned and then killed his father Uranus, he married his sister Rhea and became the ruler of Hellas. But he was not destined to rule quietly for his own pleasure - since his dying father predicted that the same fate awaited his son, that is, he would also be overthrown by one of his sons.

Titan didn't just take this into account - this prediction became his obsessive thought. And he swallowed all his children born to him by Rhea. And now, when he had already eaten five newborn children, Rhea finally decided to keep at least one of her children, the continuation of the family. The boy was born secretly, on a dark night on Mount Lycaeus in Arcadia (where, according to rumors, the shadow of no living creature has yet fallen).

After washing the newborn in the river Neda, Rhea handed over her son, whom she named Zeus, to Gaia-Earth, after which she took him to the island of Crete - where she hid in a cave on Mount Dikta. The resourceful wife slipped her husband a swaddled stone, which he safely swallowed instead of the child. Zeus survived, but Rhea could not leave the house often, so the goat Amalthea became the nurse for the baby.

Zeus grew up in Crete, guarded by the nymphs Adrasteia and Io, who fed him honey and the milk of the divine goat Amalthea. The mountain slopes of Crete were covered with oregano. Zeus grew up and grew stronger by leaps and bounds, because the goat that fed him milk fed on this wonderful plant.

And here the first memory of oregano appears - after all, the bees collected honey from a wonderful plant that covers the slopes of Mount Dikta, and the goat Amalthea fed on it, feeding the baby with milk. So we can say that oregano played an important role.

Oregano (origanum vulgare), means "mountain joy", popular names: amulet, swan, bee-lover, mother. Symbol of maternal love and health.

According to an ancient legend, a servant of the Cypriot king accidentally spilled a bottle of his master's favorite perfume. The young man was so afraid of punishment that he fainted and turned into a bush with the aroma of those same perfumes. At first glance, this is a completely inconspicuous plant, but one has only to touch it - and a delicate aroma fills the air. He was known and loved in ancient times, attributing to him wonderful properties.

Aristotle in the XNUMXth century BC e. in his work History of Animals, he wrote that if a goat living in Crete is wounded by an arrow, then the animal goes in search of oregano, which, as they believed, can expel the arrow that has settled in the body.

And in the Ukrainian legend, this is how the origin of oregano is told. There lived a boy and a girl. Their life was cheerful and carefree, because it was warmed by the love and affection of a kind and gentle mother. But grief befell the family unexpectedly - the mother died, the children remained orphans. Every day they went to the grave, begged the mother to get up, because it is difficult for orphans to live.

Once, grieving for their mother, the children saw a delicate fragrant flower on the grave. They believed that it was mother who appeared to them in the form of a flower and called it mother.

A later legend about oregano is associated with Peter I. Once, on a cold and windy autumn night, two men knocked at the house of a young mistress. The first is a giant in a fox fur cape, the second is a man in a tunic with a saber. The guests had supper and began to get ready for bed, and the girl climbed onto the stove, but could not sleep for a long time: the giant kept walking and walking around the room. His big boots pounded on the floor so hard that the whole house was trembling, how can you sleep here? The girl got up from the stove, poured something from the pot into a mug and went out to the guests.

- Uncle, probably, insomnia torments you, here you are, drink this potion. And fall asleep like after a poppy.

The giant drank and in a few minutes fell into a deep sleep. In the morning he called the young mistress and asked where her father was. She replied that her father and two brothers, her Cossacks, had gone to fight with the Swedes.

- And what is your name, beautiful?

- People call Motrey, and father and mother - Oregano.

- What potion did you give me yesterday? He slept well and got up refreshed.

- People call this herb "sweet calm".

- This weed is as good as you, Oregano! Now this potion will be called by your name, my soul.

And the stranger kissed Matryona. When the night guests got into the carriage, the one with the saber whispered in Mothra's ear:

- Do you know who kissed you?

- I do not know.

- Peter the Great himself!

- What a big one, I can see it myself, the ceiling reaches the head.

Since then, they say, they began to call that grass oregano.

Our modest northern oregano belongs to the species origanum vulgare L. and differs in taste and smell from the Greek as heaven and earth.

Oregano mastered the northern part of Europe together with the Roman legions. Since then, the rest of the peoples of Europe, and then the whole world, have recognized it. Its popularity is evidenced by the fact that at the beginning of the XNUMXth century L'origan perfumes from Coty were created and very popular - their composition was based on oregano essential oil. And today it is grown in culture in many countries.

It also grows beautifully on our spicy beds in the garden, it is only important that the place for it be sunny.

In the folk traditions of Ukraine, spicy, fragrant herbs are given a large place; they accompany a person from birth to death, decorating his life, protecting him from adversity, healing. Oregano is no exception. Along with traditional flowers, for the sake of a delicate aroma that was preserved even when dry, it was often woven into girlish wreaths, children were bathed in it. Among the people, oregano is considered a "female herb" due to the fact that it cures many female diseases and is a good means of increasing lactation.

Dried motherboard - oregano protects human memory from oblivion. Thanks to her, the memory of the homeland, father-mother, and childhood lives in a person. Hence the name.

Oregano, Origanum vulgare. Botanical description of the plant, areas of growth and ecology, economic importance, applications

Oregano common

Perennial herbaceous plant of the mint family.

Numerous tetrahedral, straight, branched stems covered with soft hairs, reach 50-75 cm.

The leaves are opposite, petiolate, oblong-ovate, pointed. Small purple flowers are collected in inflorescences in the form of panicles at the ends of the branches. The fruits are nuts of a spherical or oval shape, slightly flattened, with a matte, small-dotted surface, painted in brown-gray, brown and even black.

In the wild, distributed in Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Siberia. It grows in clearings, forest edges, hills, among shrubs, on various soils, but prefers soft, fairly rich in organic matter.

Photophilous, winter-hardy. Does not tolerate blackouts. Propagated by seeds and vegetatively. Its shoots, when in contact with the ground, form adventitious roots.

Oregrowth begins in April, budding - in June, mass flowering - in July-August. Seeds ripen in August - September.

According to the chemical composition, oregano is distinguished by a significant content of essential oil, tannins. The essential oil is mobile, colorless or yellowish. It conveys the smell of raw materials well and has a sharp taste.

Its main component is thymol. Flowers and leaves of oregano contain ascorbic acid, in addition, the leaves contain up to 29% fatty oil.

Green shoots and flowers of oregano have a strong and pleasant smell, so they are used in the preparation of kvass, pickling cucumbers and tomatoes. Oregano is put in various vegetable soups, sauces, used in the preparation of fried, stewed and baked meat. Young leaves and stems after grinding them and scalding them with boiling water can be used for filling pies, as an additive to cottage cheese and eggs.

The medicinal properties of oregano are also widely known. Its infusions stimulate the secretion of gastric juice, are used as an expectorant for acute and chronic bronchitis, whooping cough, as well as a sedative and diuretic.

Oregano common

Cultivation. Oregano requires light, well-fertilized soils. Its predecessors can be vegetables, potatoes, legumes.

After removing them, the site is loosened to a depth of 1-5 cm, after the germination of weeds, they are dug up to a depth of 25-30 cm with the simultaneous introduction of 2-2,5 kg of manure, 30 g of superphosphate and 15 g of potassium salt per 1 m2.

Oregano can be propagated by seeds and division of the bush. Seeds are sown in autumn or early spring in cold greenhouses and directly on the site. The soil is cultivated before planting.

Oregano seeds are small, so they should be sown to a depth of 1-1,5 cm, the distance between rows is 50-60 cm.

Wells must be rolled and moistened before sowing. The optimum temperature for seed germination is 18-20 °C.

When sowing seeds in May, friendly shoots appear after 14-15 days.

Seedlings are loosened and weeded, and when 2-3 leaves appear, they are thinned out, leaving a distance between plants in a row of up to 30 cm. If oregano was sown in greenhouses, then seedlings are planted in a permanent place in a wide-row way. The distance between plants and between rows is 50 cm.

When propagating oregano by dividing the rhizome, the bush is dug up in the spring (April-May) or in September.

Above-ground rooted shoots are divided into segments so that each has 3-4 growth buds. Silt is laid in holes (50 x 50 cm) and covered with earth. Plant care consists in loosening row spacings, weeding, periodic top dressing with mineral fertilizers. After cutting the green mass, in addition to top dressing, watering is necessary.

Harvesting oregano is carried out during the period of mass flowering. The stems are cut at a height of 15-20 cm from the surface of the earth in such a way that there is a minimum amount of them about the collected green mass. You can harvest immediately only a mixture of flowers and leaves, peeled from the stems. The green mass is dried under a canopy or in a well-ventilated area.

After drying, the grass is lightly wiped, separating the hard stems. Store in tightly closed boxes or boxes.

Other uses. Oregano is a good nectar plant. It blooms after the flowering of linden has ceased. High nectar productivity allows bees in Altai and Kazakhstan to collect up to 30 kg of fragrant honey per family. In the mountainous regions of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on grassy slopes and rocky ridges, oregano yields up to 10 kg of honey per family. Honey productivity under favorable conditions is 70-150 kg/ha. Observations showed a daily weight gain of the control hive during the flowering of oregano up to 1,5 kg. Up to three bees work on individual inflorescences (E. M. Petrov, 1970). One flower releases an average of 0,0283-0,0462 mg of nectar, and there are more than 300 of them in one plant. Glucose predominates in the nectar (48,76-74,89%). Soil moisture content and sensitivity to lower temperatures strongly affect nectar production, so data on honey productivity can vary greatly - from 9 to 85 kg/ha.

On one flowering shoot 1484,6 flowers. There were 80 honey bees, 42 flies, 14 bumblebees and 2 butterfly on 1 oregano flowers. One honey bee brings 19,8 mg of nectar to the hive and will spend 67% (collected in one foraging) to inspect 500 flowers and fly to the hive and back.

Honey is amber-greenish, fragrant, pleasant in taste, suitable for wintering bees, crystallizes slowly becoming white with a green-yellow tint and acquiring a fine-grained structure. Dried oregano herb is used in beekeeping to control wax moths and ants.

Oregano. The value of the plant, the procurement of raw materials, the use in traditional medicine and cooking

Oregano common

The peak of summer - July will set up stinky haystacks, will reap the harvest of winter bread. And all of it is decorated with flowers, in the wild - field, in garden gardens. Wild flowers are especially touching - so fresh and friendly, just don't forget to admire them! Snowdrifts of boiling white daisies, gilded crests of St. John's wort, cream bushes of meadowsweet - who will not notice these tall, catchy plants? Well, having looked closely, it is easy to find in the herbage a pink carnation, and a fancy resin, and oregano, in a folk way, the one that we need for a closer acquaintance.

Oregano lives in sparse forests, along the edges, among shrubs, and occasionally in meadows and even in crops. Our grass does not form dense thickets or sackcloths: it comes across only as an admixture with other components of vegetation. By itself, the oregano is noticeable enough to stand in sight among the green girlfriends. Its stems are erect, covered with soft hairs on the outside. The leaves are petiolate, they are oblong, pointed, trimmed with teeth along the contour. The underside of the leaves is paler than the top and appears light green. Long leaf blade with a finger.

The inflorescence of oregano is a sprawling panicle. Painted in purple or lilac-pink tones. The flowers themselves are small, collected in oblong-rounded spikelets, and the spikelets, in turn, form a palm-length panicle. A tube and four stamens protrude noticeably from the calyx, two longer and two shorter. Oregano is a good honey plant, which is why bees, fragrant tribute collectors, like to sit on its inflorescences. From mid-summer, the mother begins to bear fruit, giving brown trihedral nuts, no more than poppy seeds. Four types of oregano are found in the domestic flora, but only one species is of economic interest - the common oregano.

What is interesting about this plant? First of all, oregano is a spicy vegetable plant. Chopped leaves give the dishes an appetizing taste and a pleasant smell. Especially if added to dishes of potatoes, beans or peas. Since ancient times, this spice has enriched the taste of boiled meat and homemade sausages. And only those who have tasted it at least once know how magnificent kvass infused on the motherboard is! Such kvass will quench your thirst in a sultry season, whether it be in haymaking or harvesting. And not only quench, but pleasantly enjoy the luxurious smell, which has absorbed all the charm of herbs.

For tea leaves take inflorescences and young shoots. Oregano tea is curative for illnesses, acting as a diaphoretic. In addition, it contributes to normal digestion and has a strengthening effect in diseases of the nervous system. Packages of dried oregano are sold in pharmacies just for this purpose. Sometimes fragrant grass is used for compresses and for flavoring baths.

Feeding value of oregano is insignificant. The shepherds noticed that neither horses nor cows eat this grass. Sheep are more favorable to her; together with other herbs, they pinch the mother, but do not bite the entire aerial part, but only the inflorescences. In the Crimea and the Caucasus, the leaves and tops of oregano are readily eaten by roe deer. And yet, despite the limited pasture role of oregano, its admixture in hay is desirable; gives the feed a natural flavor and enriches the taste of harvested herbs.

The use of oregano in economic practice is incomparably wider. From this odorous herb, an essential oil is extracted, suitable for the manufacture of cologne and toilet water. In the dyeing business, the motherboard is used to obtain brown and black paints.

As a vegetable plant, oregano is cultivated in gardens and fields. Gardeners most often call this grass winter marjoram. Allocate a sunny, fertile plot for marjoram. It works well in the second year after applying a significant dose of manure. Grown from seeds that are sown in the ground and in early spring. Seeds are sown in rows with a distance of half a meter from one another. Planting depth - 1-1,5 cm. Marjoram shoots appear slowly, over 2-3 weeks. After breaking through, the gaps between the bushes are left at least 25-30 cm. With the seedling method of propagation, the plants are placed according to the same scheme. Seedlings are obtained in greenhouses at a temperature of 18-20 ° C.

Cut the oregano at the time of its flowering. They dry under a canopy, and whoever has dryers, then in dryers. In the year of planting, cutting is carried out once during the season, in the second and third years - 3-4 times. So that the spice does not run out of steam, it is stored in glass jars with ground stoppers. Gardeners and subtropical marjoram are bred - a perennial shrub (also from the labiate family). Its homeland is Asia Minor and North America. This heat-loving plant was a traditional spice in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. It is cultivated in the same way as oregano, and their useful properties are similar. In some European countries, this marjoram is mainly seasoned with sausages, which is why it is nicknamed "sausage grass".

The buds and leaves of subtropical marjoram are reminiscent of pepper, mint and cardamom combined. A real treasure trove of flavors!

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Silent planes on owl wings 08.12.2012

Researchers from the University of Cambridge studied the quietness of an owl. Their work opens up new possibilities for reducing aircraft noise.

Owls have an "uncanny" ability to fly silently with the help of special wing plumage. Scientists have carefully studied the structure of the owl's wings in order to better understand how this invention of nature can be applied to modern aircraft.

All wings, natural or artificial, create turbulent eddies that amplify at the trailing edge and dissipate as sound waves. Conventional aircraft with rigid trailing edges create a lot of noise because of this. Scientists have long assumed that at least three different factors are responsible for the silent flight of an owl: stiff feathers along the leading edge of the wing, soft down on the upper part of the wing, and a fringe of feathers on the trailing edge of the wing. These features allow you to effectively eliminate aerodynamic noise from the wings, better hear prey and hunt successfully.

Until now, it was not known whether all three "owl factors" are needed to reduce noise, or just one is sufficient. British scientists tried to answer this question by developing a theoretical model that describes the ability of an owl to reduce the sound of the trailing edge of the wing. Prior to this, experiments have shown that owl wing noise is weakly dependent on airflow speed, with the greatest reduction in noise occurring in the high frequency range, to which the human ear is most sensitive.

Using mathematical models, British researchers found that a resilient and porous wing trailing edge can significantly reduce aerodynamic noise at certain flight speeds. This means that there is an opportunity to make passenger airliners quieter, and drones almost silent.
