Hydrangea. Legends, myths, history

Hydrangea

Hydrangea in the language of flowers means - remember me, modesty, sincerity, hope.

The word hydrangea comes from the Greek word hydor which means water and the word angos which means vessel. Literally translated, hydrangea means a vessel with water. This name is due to the need of a flower in water. After all, hydrangea is a moisture-loving plant.

In the countries of the East, this flower has been known since time immemorial and is colloquially called a fashionista. First of all, because the hydrangea loves to change its color very much. It turns out to be blue or blue, then it suddenly becomes pink or lilac. And her flowers, like a fashionista, are also not real. Look closely at the umbrellas of inflorescences - instead of petals and marginal flowers - overgrown sepals. And in the middle - a tiny ball, this is the corolla of a real, unblown flower.

A Japanese legend about flowers says that once the emperor, in order to apologize to the family of his beloved, sent them a bouquet of hydrangeas. Perhaps that is why many associate hydrangeas with cordiality, sincere feelings shown in any situation, regardless of joy or sadness. However, not everyone compares hydrangea with modesty and hope.

According to the Victorian language of flowers, hydrangea symbolizes coldness, indifference. Some say that the hydrangea symbolizes boasting and vanity. This comparison is due to the abundance of flowers collected in large inflorescences. However, the grace and beauty of the hydrangea is undeniable.

The Frenchwoman Nicole-Reine Etable de la Brière, and by her husband Madame Lepot, is famous for her outstanding abilities in mathematics. This amazing woman was able to calculate the trajectory of a comet from Jupiter and Saturn, which in the XNUMXth century was a very difficult task.

For six months, Nicole-Rein carried out calculations, and later compiled a detailed map of the solar eclipse, and also discovered many other secrets of space. Thus, Madame Lepot was not only a brilliant mathematician, but also an astronomer. Astronomical calculations, and astronomy in general, were the occupation of her whole life.

At the peak of the glory of Nicole-Reine, an unknown flower was brought from Japan to Paris, which was called the "Japanese rose", and in honor of Madame Lepot, the flower was nicknamed "potia". Later, the name was changed, the flower began to be called "hydrangea". As a result of all these events, the legend of Hortense Lepot arose.

In 1823, the German naturalist and naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold arrived from Rotterdam through Batavia to Nagasaki on the island of Dezima as a doctor; he was in the service of the Dutch East India Company.

Initially, the German, who did not know Dutch, aroused suspicion among the Japanese. But Philip Siebold quickly earned the respect of the Japanese, he surrounded himself with students and brought Western medicine to the country, for which the Japanese are still grateful to this doctor.

Mr. Siebold also studied geography, climate, flora and fauna of the Japanese archipelago, met with Tokugawa, and along the way - spied for Germany.

It is difficult to live in Japan for a long seven years without a wife, marriages with foreigners were forbidden, so the doctor took the geisha Kusumoto Taki as a temporary wife. The German called his Japanese woman Hortensia.

Philipp Franz von Siebold described 14 new species of the genus Hydrangea, naming them Hydrangea in honor of his temporary wife. By the way, this woman is considered in Japan the first European doctor.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Sweet death for mosquitoes 06.01.2018

ISCA Technologies, a US company, said it has developed three simple, low-cost ways to fight malarial mosquitoes using compounds called signaling pheromones and other substances released by organisms to control the behavior of other organisms. ISCA's "cocktails" of signaling compounds produced by plants and animals lure harmful insects and kill them with insecticides. This method works more effectively on mosquitoes and allows you to spray fewer insecticides.

Mosquitoes are not only annoying, they spread the agents of devastating diseases, including the malaria and Zika viruses that have caused pandemics. In 2015 alone, 212 million people contracted malaria and an estimated 429 died, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Wealthy countries like the US have effective mosquito control tools, but many developing countries cannot afford these tools.

Smell-based technologies are very promising, but there are still many problems to be solved, in particular, to take into account the possibility of adaptation of mosquitoes, which will allow them not to be tempted by these signaling compounds.

To begin with, the so-called. "signature blend" (signature blend), which the company ironically called the "Trojan cow", consisting of signal compounds that mimic the smell of a person, which mosquitoes naturally adore. With a false human odor, this mixture can be sprayed on livestock and other pets. Mosquitoes, attracted by the smell, will drink animal blood, not human blood. And if these animals are injected with drugs that are toxic to mosquitoes (for example, typical drugs for worms), bloodsuckers will die.

Further, there is also a mixture of a pheromone that attracts adult females and an attractant that lures their larvae. It can be sprayed before rain in potential mosquito breeding areas. When in contact with water, this mixture releases pheromones that encourage females to lay eggs in the area it has treated. The hatched larvae eat this attractant, which contains live bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, and these bacteria kill mosquito larvae without harming other insects, in particular bees and butterflies.

Finally, the third remedy takes into account that disease-carrying mosquitoes also need sugar in addition to blood. ISCA researchers have studied a range of plant-derived signaling compounds and created a mixture that smells like nectar. The company plans to spray this mixture along with pesticides under the roofs of houses or near the fences of the villages. Mosquitoes, attracted by these sweet-smelling traps to the meal, will meet a sweet death. Somewhere even romantic.
