For body temperature measurements thermometers are used. Before measuring the temperature, wipe the armpit dry and check the level of the mercury column on the thermometer. Measurement of temperature in the armpit and in the groin should last 10 minutes, in the rectum - 5 minutes: during this period, the thermometer records the maximum temperature. Morning measurement is made between 6-7 o'clock, evening - between 17-18 o'clock.

You should not take the temperature of a sleeping person, because the thermometer often slips out of the armpit and can be broken or crushed in bed. In addition, a sleeping patient does not fix the thermometer, and therefore it can show a lower temperature than in reality.

The patient should lie on his back or side, press the thermometer, bringing the arm bent at the elbow joint and placing the forearm on the chest. If the patient is restless or unconscious, it is necessary to stand near him and support his hand. When placing a thermometer, you should make sure that there is neither a heating pad nor an ice pack nearby, that there is no local inflammatory process in the temperature measurement zone, because all this can affect the reliability of temperature readings.

To measure the temperature in the rectum, you must first put a cleansing enema, lay the patient on his side and introduce a thermometer richly lubricated with petroleum jelly. After that, the thermometer is washed and disinfected.

In healthy people, the temperature in the morning is lower than in the evening. Physiological fluctuations in temperature associated with work or eating normally do not exceed 1°C.

The temperature in the oral cavity, in the vagina, in the rectum is higher than the body temperature, measured in the axillary and inguinal regions, by 1°C.
