New recipe for fuel. Tips for a modeler

Modeling

Until very recently, it seemed to us that it was simply impossible to call any publication "material of the year", especially in the modeling section. The variety of types and classes makes this or that article intended only for its one, certain circle of athletes. Therefore, such a high assessment would be simply incompetent due to the particular issues it addresses.

However, such material has appeared. The package has arrived. It contains an act of technical testing and an accompanying note describing the fuel mixture, the components of which can be purchased at ... a hardware store.

For people who are unfamiliar with modeling and its problems, let us explain: for many, many years, the issue of supplying modellers with the necessary fuel components for microengines - ethyl ether or especially methyl alcohol - was the talk of the town.

How many letters of approximately the same content went to the editor with one question: "I bought a package-package and an engine, the model is already ready, how to start the engine, where to get the necessary components for fuel?" What could be the answer? Recommend trips to large modeling centers where a beginner would be given at least some amount of fuel? But after all, there are simply no such organizations of technical creativity, where there is simply no fuel! What can I say - the question was sore to the extreme ...

But nevertheless, the kind of technical creativity and sport, beloved by boys and adult athletes, has never experienced a decline. By hook or by crook, fuel was mined. And at the same time, how many people have been driven away from modeling by this, in general, trifling problem!

Now it is still difficult to fully appreciate the benefits that this pair of recipes can bring to modeling, but there will be no doubt that there will be a tangible return!

"A technical commission consisting of five people (an instructor in aviation sports, deputy chairman of the city federation of aircraft modeling sports, an aircraft engineer and a patent engineer) tested the fuel for glow ignition engines proposed by N. Golubev and V. Ivushkin. The tests were carried out on a serial microengine "Rainbow-7", produced in Perm.

Tests have shown:

- the engine starts well (in the vast majority of tests, it took less than 1 minute to start, in about half of the cases the engine was "cold");

- when the power source is disconnected from the glow plug, the engine continues to work steadily;

- the maximum and minimum stable revolutions of the crankshaft with a standard load (propeller 250X150 mm) were in the range of 1000-12000 rpm, which fully satisfies the engine's passport data for fuel consisting of 1 part castor oil and 3 parts ethyl or methyl alcohol;

- the engine runs continuously without jamming up to 10 minutes;

- in the process of testing, the engine worked for a total of 4 hours. Further tests were not carried out, since the engine worked out its passport resource.

Engine tests were carried out in the widest range of ambient temperatures and humidity (outdoors).

Conclusions:

- the fuel of the proposed composition is efficient; the serial engine runs stably on it, without reducing the main characteristics;

- the proposed fuel is non-toxic, affordable, at retail prices cheaper than alcohol;

- recommend fuel for use in technical sports.

Composition of fuel I (%):

  • gasoline (grades A-76 or AI-93): 26;
  • acetone: 8;
  • solvent for oil paints (art. KL-095-01-81 or TU 205 RSFSR 11.269-80): 53;
  • mineral oil (grade AC-8 or MS): 13.

A little about the creation of a new fuel and the reasons that prompted us to look for new "fuel" compositions for glow microengines.

In modeling, unpretentious motors such as "Rainbow" and "Meteor" are widely used. Their main disadvantage is that they work on a toxic, methanol-containing composition. In addition, the fuel recommended in the passports is difficult to access for a wide range of modellers and expensive, based on retail prices for ethyl alcohol, which is sold only in remote areas of the country. Castor oil in the volumes required for formulating mixtures is not sold at all in pharmacies.

The shortcomings of methyl (and ethyl) fuel have led to the fact that young men are forbidden to compete with incandescent engines, mountains of generally good engines are stale on store shelves.

While working in the aeromodelling laboratory, we set ourselves the task of finding a composition of available components that would allow us to operate "kilometers" without changing their design. A study of the technical literature and similar fuels made it possible to identify more than a dozen suitable substances and approximately determine their possible percentage in the future fuel.

Further work was experimental in nature. Over 50 different formulations have been tested. The found mixture can be purchased component by component even in a rural household goods store, it is ten times cheaper than alcohol ... "

...A little time passed, and another interesting letter came to the editorial office. It contained answers to the questions of the editors that arose after reading the first correspondence, and most importantly - it reported a new recipe for "fuel". We think you will be interested to get acquainted with the continuation of the correspondence.

"The answer to the question about testing an engine with a working volume of 2,5 cm3, about its tendency to overheat as more heat-stressed compared to multi-cc samples.

The results of trial runs of 2,5cc are positive. Work on the proposed fuel differed only in increased smoke emission. Overheating was not observed, the resource of glow plugs is similar to the resource on the alcohol composition. Tests for the resource of the engine itself, unfortunately, were not carried out, since the main goal was to work out the composition for the aerobatic motor.

We believe that domestic microengines are in no way inferior to foreign and home-made ones in their design, it is only necessary to carefully select the components and adjust the valve timing. After that, you can rely on the motor, and its resource, as a rule, exceeds the passport one with a good start and stable operation.

During the operating life of the Raduga-7, 30% of the launches were carried out with MS-20 oil, the rest - with AS-8 oil. The results are the same. Taking into account the difficulties in providing MS-20 aviation oil, we can safely recommend the easily accessible automotive AC-8.

We report another similar fuel recipe. Compared with the already proposed it has a number of advantages. This is a smoother adjustment of engine speed (which is important both for Cordovic pilots and for everyone who has a motor equipped with a controlled carburetor), smoke emission is less than even for alcohol compositions, a simplified ratio of components.

Composition of fuel II (%):

  • turpentine: 30;
  • solvent for oil paints (similar to the first composition): 40;
  • acetone: 10;
  • mineral oil AS-8: 20.

It should be noted that research on the search for new types of fuel is not over. Therefore, we ask everyone who has tested and applied the proposed formulations in practice to report their opinion.

Ancient noodles 06.03.2006

It seems that the dispute about who invented pasta - Italians, Arabs or Chinese, is forever settled in favor of the latter.

The expedition of the Beijing Institute of Geology and Geophysics found in the floodplain of the Yangtze, in silty deposits at a depth of three meters, a clay bowl with petrified spaghetti-type noodles up to half a meter long. Apparently, the village of the ancient Chinese was covered by a mud landslide, which preserved a household dish with food.

The find is 4000 years old, almost two thousand years older than known evidence of pasta in China, and much older than the documented occurrence of such products in Europe or the Middle East.

The study of DNA preserved in the noodles showed that the basis was flour from two local types of millet.
