SONY ERICSSON T68I. Mobile phone overview Review In terms of dimensions and weight, the T68i is similar to the T68 (100x48x20 mm, 84 grams), but differs from the latter in the color of the case. The designers decided to give the phone an airy feel by making the body itself matte silver, and the edging around the screen in a heavenly metallic color (I don’t know if there is such a color, but this is exactly the association that was born in my head). The shape of the speaker opening has changed, and this is where the external differences between the devices end. The T68i will only be available in one color scheme (Arctic Blue). It's a pity, but in the manufacture of the T68i, a different type of plastic is used than in the T68. In the base model, the back panel felt more like rubber than plastic, but in the phone we tested, everything was standard - as a result, the device slides on inclined surfaces. The keyboard is made of plastic and painted in the color of the body. The black markings on the keys are clearly visible both on a sunny day outside and in the dark. Blue keyboard backlight; for reasons that are not entirely clear, keys 3 and 6 glow less brightly than the others. The number keys are spaced at a decent distance and are therefore easy to use. Below the screen there is a navigation joystick, which, in addition to the 4 traditional directions, has an additional degree of freedom - you can simply press it. In my opinion, the joystick is easy to use and you can quickly get used to it, but for some reason it irritates some users. A few words about the display. Let me remind you that the T68 was the first mass-produced device with a color screen, and its descendant is still the only phone of its kind on the market. The T68 has a graphic display that supports up to 256 colors and has a resolution of 101x80 pixels with a physical size of 34x28 mm. Up to 8 lines of text are placed on the screen, which allows you to easily view short messages or wap-pages. In standby mode with the backlight off, the display becomes blind. With the backlight turned on, the information on the screen is visible quite well: the text is clear, the images are clear. The backlight can be left constantly on - the phone will work all day, but at night it will have to be charged. To adjust the contrast of the display, a scale of 10 divisions is provided. It is possible to install three types of fonts - standard, large and small, I liked the standard one. In standby mode, a bright digital clock moves across the dark screen. Due to the contrast, they are clearly visible and are quite pleasant in themselves. On a bright sunny day, the text on the display is visible, although not very clearly - nevertheless, working with the phone does not cause problems. The screen is illuminated by LEDs located on the side. As current testing has shown, on a sunny day the information on the screen is difficult to read. This discrepancy in estimates is explained by the fact that the previous model (T68) was tested in November, when the sun was not shining so brightly. The volume rocker is located on the left side surface. In standby mode, you can use it to find out the date, as well as the approximate operating time of a 700 mAh lithium-polymer battery. According to the manufacturer on a single charge, the device works up to 300 hours in standby mode and up to 11 hours in talk mode. In the conditions of Moscow networks, the phone functioned for about 5 days (with 15 minutes of calls per day, using the alarm clock, reminders and games). The result obtained completely coincides with that for T68. With 2 hours of calls per day, the phone works for about a day and a half. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2-2.5 hours. On the right side surface there is an IR port window, at the bottom there is an interface connector, standard for Ericsson phones (most branded accessories are suitable for this model). Menu In order to get to the main menu, just press the joystick or reject it in the horizontal plane. The main menu is a set of 9 icons that provide access to a list of items and sub-items, each of which is numbered, which allows you to use the numerical sequence and quickly call up the menu item you are interested in. The first thing that catches your eye is the changed icons of the main menu. There are still 3 of them, but the list of functions hidden behind them has expanded, as well as the capabilities of the device itself. Let's start in order, namely with the phone book. Phone book Outwardly, everything here remains the same. Voice dialing has the same drawback: the phone stores two identical labels for different numbers. There is a new voice command Redial, which allows you to send a call using voice dialing - very convenient in the car. There was no built-in speakerphone function, and it’s a pity - it would have come in handy. The ability to specify fields for entering information has been added. Now several fields are set by default, namely Name, Work, Home, Mobile. All other fields (Fax, Other, E-mail, Name, Company) are hidden; in order for them to be displayed, you need to mark them in the Properties; settings are simple and accessible. In T68, 10 fields were available (one of them was called Surname). It is curious that in the T68i menu, which is responsible for sorting the phone book, you can select fields such as First Name or Last Name. Moreover, in all items that ensure data synchronization with other devices (PDA, phone), the Last Name field is also present - most likely this is due to an error in the current firmware version (R2A). When synchronizing data from a PC, information from the First Name field is inserted into the corresponding field, and the Last Name item remains empty. Among the innovations, it is worth noting the ability to correlate pictures from the device’s memory with names in the phone book. It would seem like pampering, but the interface is becoming more diverse, and the phone does not become boring so quickly. By the way, a corresponding item has appeared for managing contacts with pictures. When the menu language is selected in Russian, a quick search for contacts is carried out only in English; this is a drawback of the phone software. Although, by moving the joystick to the right and holding it for a couple of seconds, you can call up a search window where you can type in Russian, there are no problems here. Dictaphone This function has undergone noticeable changes, and for the better. Now the user has the opportunity to record both his voice and the voice of the interlocutor, the total recording time has increased. Formally, it is 1879 seconds, but only 1049 seconds are free of them, or almost 18 minutes - perhaps this is a record (we do not take Siemens Sl45 into account: a memory card is used there). Activating the voice recorder during a conversation has become much more convenient - just select the appropriate item in the context menu, where, by the way, it is listed first. During recording, the keyboard is blocked, so if you need to confirm a particular choice (for example, to answer a system prompt), the voice recorder will have to be turned off. Messages A new item has appeared in this menu - Multimedia messages, or simply MMS. Let me remind you that you can send and receive MMS messages only with the support of an operator, which we do not yet have in our country. Nevertheless, the potential that this service carries is interesting. For example, by placing text, pictures and animation in the body of an MMS message, the user can voice the message using one or more melodies. Having studied the structure of the 5 MMS messages installed on your phone as an example, you will be able to create them yourself in the future. Everything is very simple and intuitive, the possibilities for creativity are almost endless, but several templates are also provided. Data is entered on separate pages, on each of which you can place text, an image, and a melody, indicating at the same time with what delay this or that element should be displayed. In general, this is a must try. Especially for MMS, 55 static pictures have been added to the phone, as well as 17 new small melodies available in the Entertainment menu, as well as almost everywhere where they can be used. The device is distinguished by great transparency: so, if the picture corresponds to the name in the phone book, you can call it by editing the number. The same pictures are available when writing messages and can be used as wallpaper. The same is true with melodies: they are not only included in MMS messages, but are also assigned as a ringtone. By the way, melodies can be typed directly in the built-in editor or sent from a PC. Entertainment This menu stores pictures, melodies (not all, but only 17 intended for messages), settings for the melodies editor, voice recorder and graphic editor. The latter, by the way, is very simple - you won’t be able to get a high-quality picture with it. Memory in the T68i is allocated dynamically, so it is impossible to record many new pictures without deleting some of the old or standard ones. Games are also hidden in this menu. Not only their number has changed, but also the names. Now the phone has 8 games: Arimona, Contrary, Erix, Four piles, Naval Fleet, North territory, Q and Yukon Struggle (more than half of them are solitaire games). In my opinion, games have become much more interesting - just look at the classic naval battle (Naval Fleet), which I think everyone played in school. There are no active games, except for the traditional Erix. The last thing worth mentioning is Themes. In the T68 model, menu color options were called themes - the T68i concept is interpreted more broadly: in addition to the color of the interface windows, their graphic design, sounds, and wallpapers in the standby mode change. A very good innovation - the phone can really be customized according to your mood, which potentially increases the life of the device. Organizer Outwardly, all the functions of the organizer remained the same: the same settings, the amount of memory. The changes affected primarily the means of synchronization: the updated version fully supports SyncML, which allows you to synchronize the phone book, as well as organizer data with other devices. These functions should be considered as the first signs, soon such features will become standard for most business devices. It is easy to get contacts from other PDAs, but for some reason the phone does not accept entries from the organizer. In this case, an error message appears on the PDA during transmission. It is possible to synchronize both via infrared and via Bluetooth, in addition, SyncML allows you to get remote (for example, via wap) access to the database with subsequent synchronization. It was not possible to check the last function due to the lack of the necessary base. It remains to be noted that the synchronization process exacerbates the phone’s sensitivity to language, or more precisely to encoding. It was possible to get contact information in Russian only from phones, but, alas, not from a Palm PDA. Of course, today this function is not yet in demand, but in a year it will become popular, and I think that in the next model all these points will be worked out more carefully. Impressions It is indeed a very successful model. There are no problems with sensitivity, the sound in the speaker is good, the ringer volume is sufficient, the vibration alert is average. There are no obvious downsides to the phone. The disadvantages include some dimness of the display in bright sunlight, as well as the lack of alternative body colors. Minor problems with data synchronization should not be considered a drawback: this is a new feature added on top of what was already there. Compared to its predecessor, the phone has become more refined (and the T68 was a polished device without serious flaws!). In the new model, the software has become, in my opinion, better: navigating through the menu is faster (though not instantly), and the time spent thinking when choosing an item has been reduced. A feature such as MMS support is currently redundant, but its presence allows you to use an additional set of pictures and melodies almost everywhere.
