SIEMENS ME45Siemens S45

Without exaggeration, we can say that these two devices were among the most anticipated this year. The increased attention to new Siemens models is explained by the fact that for the first time GPRS support appeared in the phones of this company, and also by the fact that S45 and ME45 are a logical continuation of Siemens S35, one of the best business class phones. So, what features do these phones offer and how do they differ from each other?

From the point of view of functionality, the models are identical, they differ in design and the presence of a waterproof case in the ME45. For the Siemens M35 model, a similar version of the case was also provided, and, apparently, the popularity of this device played a big role in the creation of the ME45. True, in the latter case, the Siemens S45 business-class device was taken as a basis. As a result, we got a business phone in a secure design, and the S45 and ME45 cost the same, so only your personal likes and preferences will be the determining criteria when choosing a device. I think that the ME45 will not only win recognition among young people, but, despite its toy design (which I, for example, really like), will attract some business users.

With the same case dimensions (109x46x20 mm), the ME45 weighs 6 grams more: its weight is 99g versus 93g for the S45. The increase in weight is due to the appearance of rubber inserts that cover the side keys and do not allow the phone to slip out of your hands. Similar rubber inserts on the back cover will not allow the device to move freely on a smooth surface. Locking Mechanism - A 90-degree rotatable screw secures the back cover securely. The ME45 comes with rubber seals that cover the battery, as well as connectors for an external antenna and an interface. Connector seals come in duplicate so that if you lose one, you'll still have a spare.

The next difference, which can be called significant, is the design and appearance of the keyboards. In the ME45, the keys are made of rubber, they are quite tight, but they are comfortable to work with. Navigation and soft keys are located under the screen. In ME45, it is more convenient to use these keys, since in S45 the end call and call keys are located close to the soft keys, and in order to press them, you have to bend your fingers in an unnatural way (such, at least, are my subjective feelings). In the S45, the keys are plastic, painted to match the body color; in my opinion, they are pressed a little easier, and if you carry the phone in your jacket pocket, you have to use a keypad lock - in the case of the ME45 this is not necessary.

Both phones have a volume control key on the left side, and a voice recorder key on the right side.

The S45 comes in two colors - silver and navy blue with a yellow screen backlight. The ME45 will be available in two housing options - gray and safari gray (cream), in both cases, the backlight of the screen is yellow.

Battery, display, menu

Both models have a 840 mAh lithium-ion battery. Next, I will talk about the ME45, since all the differences between the models have already been named.

It would seem that the phone should work longer than its predecessor - Siemens S35, but it's not. The time is at least comparable, and if the device is used actively, then it is even less. According to the manufacturer's statement, the phone works in standby mode up to 300 hours, in talk mode - up to 6 hours. The full charge time is 2 hours. Indeed, the charging time is the same as stated, but the standby time varies widely. So, with active use of the phone (games, reminders, speakerphone) and 15-20 minutes of conversations, the battery lasted only 2.5 days. If you talk 15 minutes a day and forget about the existence of other functions, the device will work for 4 days. Here is what is written about this in the instructions: 1 minute of conversation reduces the phone's standby time from 30 to 60 minutes. One minute of screen backlighting reduces battery life by 30 minutes. Network search and registration reduces the operating time from 5 to 10 minutes. Thus, with active use, the phone really works for about two and a half days, which is quite a bit. So, Nokia 6310, which will appear in December and will compete with this model, according to the manufacturer, will be able to work up to 20 days without charging. Of course, you can buy an additional battery with a higher capacity (for ME45), but this is a new cost. The battery life is perhaps the weakest point of this model.

Graphic display with a resolution of 101x80 pixels allows you to display up to 7 lines of text with 16 characters each. The amber-colored backlight, it seemed to me, is somewhat different from that used in the SL45, although, according to the manufacturer, they are identical. With the backlight working in the evening, all information on the screen is clearly visible.

In standby mode, the screen displays the battery indicator (it changes smoothly and has no divisions), signal strength (5 divisions), the name of the mobile operator, date and time. You can turn on a screen saver in the form of a clock or a screensaver - a picture with footprints in the sand. At the bottom of the screen there are labels for soft keys; by default, these are Phone or Address Book and Menu.

For those who are familiar with the Siemens S35 menus, the main menu and submenus of the 45 series will seem familiar: they are organized in the same way. Each item is numbered, quick navigation is provided. Russification is not done in the best way: some items, such as forwarding, have shortened names - Forwarding. The letter Yu in the font used is larger than all other letters, and if it is present in the name of a menu item, it looks sloppy. However, these are minor shortcomings related to the field of aesthetics and do not affect the functionality of the device. In future firmware versions, these artifacts with Russian menu names are promised to be fixed. By the way, I had phones with the firmware of the 5th version, now the 7th firmware is already available - there are no fundamental differences in the versions.

In addition to quick navigation, it is possible to assign any of the number keys to the value of one of the most frequently used menus or a phone number. By long pressing the key, a menu appears in which you can select the desired action and program the key.

Phone features

When you turn it on for the first time, the phone will ask you to confirm it, since a secure profile is being used. Performing this simple action will most likely cause you some difficulties due to inaccuracies in the translation. The device asks to "confirm turning off the phone" and offers to choose between the OK and Cancel keys. Pressing the Cancel key leads to shutdown - you need to press OK, not paying attention to what is written. You will then be prompted to copy the phone book from the SIM card to the phone's address book and select it as the default. You can use the phone book from the SIM card, but this is silly in my opinion, since the address book allows you to save up to 500 names. Moreover, for each name, you can enter up to 14 fields, such as Last Name, First Name, Company, E-mail Address, Phone, Work Phone, Mobile Phone, Fax, Street, Zip Code, Group, City, Country, Link to a network resource. Both in the address book and in the phone book, you can use the quick search function: you enter a letter - and all names starting with this character are displayed on the screen. Unfortunately, the phone does not support data entry in Russian, but it allows you to read them. Thus, the necessary information can be entered into the PC, since the cable is included in the package, and then synchronize them with the phone. In any case, it is more convenient to fill in the address book on a PC. In the future, more precisely at the beginning of next year, new firmware is expected to support input in Russian, both in the address book and when creating SMS messages.

As you already understood, the phone software provides for the presence of profiles that allow you to quickly switch from one mode of operation to another. The total number of profiles is 8, the default is Normal, there is also a Quiet place, a Noisy place, a Car, a Headset and two empty cells intended for the profiles you created. You can quickly switch from one profile to another by pressing the side key on the left. Traditionally, for each profile, you can set the ringtone volume, ringtone, turn on the call filter, etc.

Consider other features of the phone. There are lists of recent calls with the time and date of the call, from which, as well as from any other place (for example, SMS messages), you can extract numbers to save them in the phone or address book.

The Office menu provides access to the telephone directory and address book, but we have already talked about this. The Organizer item allows you to set up only 50 events, which is a pity, because the phone has free memory that could be distributed dynamically. In the Calendar, you can view the schedule for a month or a week broken down by hours. Days with reminders are in bold. There are several types of reminders: Meeting, Task, Note. The alarm clock is also configured here, both for single and for multiple (any combination of days) operation. The alarm clock works when the phone is off. Finally, I note that it is possible to synchronize organizer data with MS Outlook, which is very convenient.

In the same Office menu are the clock settings. Moscow was not in the list of cities for which you can set the time zone. In general, the selection is extremely strange, and, in my opinion, uncomfortable. In the same paragraph, the phone can be configured to turn off automatically.

The voice recorder allows you to record one or more voice notes with a total duration of up to 3 minutes, including during a conversation. You only need to save the recording at the end of the communication session by pressing the Save key: there is no automatic saving.

The calculator and currency converter are traditionally simple. Finally, the Voice commands menu. The phone supports 10 voice tags for accessing menu items and up to 20 tags for voice dialing. Label recognition is more than decent, there were no problems using these functions.

It remains to say that the phone has a stopwatch (list of values, saving the list), a countdown timer and two games. The first one is the Balloon Shooter: moving the sight across the screen, you have to shoot the balls flying from the bottom up - simple and tedious. The second game is called Stack Attack: you are a loader who forms rows of boxes. At first, this toy also seems very boring, but after 15 minutes you get involved - I recommend everyone to try it.

SMS messages, data transfer, synchronization with PC

The ME45 supports almost all modern data transfer technologies with the exception of Bluetooth. In particular, EMS is supported, that is, the phone can transfer melodies and pictures to other devices with similar technical equipment. For example, when writing a new message, you can insert one of the 15 pictures of ducklings with funny names that were originally recorded on your phone, or one simple melody. You can use CardExplorer and send a graphic or a melody from a memory card, not only along with an SMS message, but also directly via the infrared port. You can record this data both from a PC and get it from another phone and save it again on a memory card. The amount of memory available for user needs is just over 400 KB, which is quite enough to perform the above tasks.

When typing a new message, if you write in Latin, but in Russian, you must turn off T9 predictive text input: it will interfere.

Working with the infrared port is not difficult: you can send both your business card and any data, such as a phone book entry, to another phone.

For the first time in Siemens phones, the settings for working with WAP and GPRS through Russian providers, in particular MTS and Beeline, are initially recorded. The user is relieved of the need to independently set the necessary settings. Let me remind you that in ME45 GPRS class 4, however, the capabilities of the Beeline network do not allow reaching maximum values (but this is only for now). Starting from the new year, a software update will be available for ME45 and S45 with support for GPRS class 8 (6+2). A small lyrical digression on the topic: recently, when testing phones, they often ask to focus on the story about the work of GPRS, but, in my opinion, this is still impossible. Beeline provides a packet data service in test mode, at least until October 20, and does not charge for it. This means that the GPRS technology has not really been tested in the network yet, in particular, there are no capacities capable of ensuring the operation of voice channels and GPRS in the same area during maximum load. That is why it can be assumed that the GPRS service in the Beeline network will remain free for quite a long time, otherwise the users, outraged by its low quality, will in every possible way demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the company's work. I call the quality of services low because while using WAP via GPRS can still be considered comfortable (the amount of data is small), then browsing the web from a PC is already difficult: loading large illustrations can take a very long time. When transferring large files (more than 500 KB) somewhere in the middle, the download speed drops - the rest can be received for several hours, which is unacceptable for most users. In a word, comfortable work with the network does not work, GPRS is an option in extreme cases, but not a full-fledged means of work. The situation should change as soon as this service becomes commercial.

So, back to our "rams". The GPRS settings for Beeline are registered in the device, I give them for gray handsets that do not have a default profile.

profile name - Beeline

WAP settings:

  • IP address: 192.168.017.001
  • Port: 9201
  • 2nd address: 192.168.017.001
  • 2nd port: 9201
  • Homepage: internet.beeline.ru
  • Linger time: 300

CSD settings:

  • Dial-up no.: 671
  • Call type: analog
  • Login name: beeline
  • Password: beeline

GPRS settings:

  • APN: wap.beeline.ru
  • Login name: beeline
  • Password: beeline

With standard settings, a small problem often arises: the Beeline start page is not displayed and the phone reports an error. According to Siemens representatives, this is a problem with this start page, just enter a different address or select a bookmark and everything will work. For example, you can make wap.mts.ru as the first page - everything works fine.

Now consider connecting the phone to the PC. To do this, you can use both the infrared port and the included data cable. In any case, the first step is to install the Windows phone modem driver. To do this, manually select the SiemensS45.inf file from the Software/GPRS directory and install a new modem, then set up a new connection in the standard way. We select the phone as a modem, then indicate the dial-up phone - *99***2#. Now you need to disable the use of the city and country code when dialing, then specify the initialization string AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.beeline.ru" (tab General - Settings - Connection - Advanced).

It remains to configure the Network tab: check only TCP / IP, then click the Configure TCP / IP button. Specify DNS addresses - primary 194.067.002.114 and secondary 194.190.195.066. On the same tab, disable the use of IP header compression. And this is where all the settings end - you can try out the created connection in "combat" conditions.

Among other things, you can install the PC synchronization software from the CD. In particular, this is Data Exchange Software, a program that shows the phone's memory as another drive and allows you to write, copy and delete files from it. Very convenient and simple. So, for example, you can store dictaphone recordings on a PC and simply transfer them to your phone at the right time.

The second program, Siemens Quick Sync, allows you to synchronize data from the calendar and address book. In addition, you can enter new entries on your PC (including in Russian) and then synchronize them with your phone - everything is extremely clear and convenient.

Sound quality, ringtones and vibration

The ME45 speaker does not give reasons for dissatisfaction, hardly anyone will say that the sound in it is deaf and hard to distinguish. I remember that at one time the sound quality of the S35 was the subject of a heated and lengthy debate. In this case, even the built-in speakerphone provides good audibility. Of course, the volume is not enough for a conversation in a car, but for communication from the office or even from the street, it is quite.

Another pleasant surprise is the appearance of a very pleasant call. Of course, these are not LG500 melodies, but still the motives are not the most hackneyed, and, most importantly, they sound, not squeak. The device's memory stores 38 preset tones and ringtones, it is possible to record as many melodies as you like, the limit is imposed only by the size of free memory. There are 4 free slots to assign your own ringtones for simultaneous use, such as general calls, VIP calls, phone calls with numbers from the address book and SMS alert.

The vibrating alert, in my opinion, is better than in the S35 (you need to check this function not in your hands, as some recruits like to do, but in a holster or at least on a belt belt).

The sensitivity of the phone seemed to me very good and quite comparable with the same parameter of the S35, which is far from the last device in its class.

For all the time of using the software, not a single error was noticed that would cause the phone to reboot or cause it to work incorrectly.

Сonclusion

Phones, in addition to all their other advantages, are equipped with a data cable and appropriate software. At the same time, devices already with the 5th version of the firmware work stably. All declared functions are performed according to the specification.

The only downside to the S45 and ME45 is the relatively short battery life. In the future, it will be possible to enter text in Russian, GPRS from class 4 will become class 8, which theoretically will affect the data transfer rate (with appropriate support from the telecom operator).

For now, it remains to state that Siemens S45 and Siemens ME45 are the most functional among devices in this price category. I think that in the near future, when the level of sales of these models will significantly exceed those of competitors, you will be convinced of the correctness of my assumptions.
