SAMSUNG SGH-N600, 620. Mobile phone review
Review
Both phones belong to the fashion class and in many ways resemble the R200/R210 combination - youth models that enjoyed undoubted success in their time. The novelties even outwardly resemble R200/R210 in size and weight: N620 dimensions are 100 x 43 x 19.9, weight is 83 grams. The device is available in four color options - white, black, blue and silver (White pearl, Black, Sky blue, Silver). The phone has an external antenna that makes it difficult to put it in your jeans pocket. In the upper left corner there is a service indicator, shaped like a boomerang, a little lower - the display. Remarkable rich blue backlight screen allows you to display up to 3 lines of text of 16 characters, as well as a line of icons and labels for soft keys. Display resolution - 128x64 pixels. Information on the screen is easy to read both with and without backlighting: the display is very contrasty. Below is the keyboard. Between the two soft keys you see vertical scroll keys. Convex plastic keys are located close enough to each other - while typing, you can accidentally touch the adjacent key, but it will not be pressed. In general, the keyboard can be called comfortable: put the screen down, the phone will not rely on the keys. Although, of course, if you press on it from above, only the keyboard lock will save the situation. I advise you to always turn it on when you put the device in your pocket: the keys are pressed easily. On the left side surface there is a double volume rocker, a bit higher - a connector for connecting a headset covered with a rubber plug. At the bottom there is an interface connector, and at the top there is a rubber plug that covers the connector for an external antenna. Traditionally, this connector is made on the rear surface of the phone - in the N620, a rubber plug covers the fastening screw. Such an arrangement could be called unsuccessful if many used external antennas, but since only a few actually do this, this disadvantage can be considered insignificant. On the back surface, you can see a speaker hole used to play ringtones. The appearance of a speaker instead of a standard tweeter is due to the fact that the phone uses a 16-voice Yamaha synthesizer to play ringtones. Polyphonic ringtones have acquired a really new sound, so far only 8-voice synthesizers (Alcatel 511) have been used. The battery is part of the back wall of the phone, is mounted in the grooves and is fixed with a latch at the top. There is no backlash in the battery, most likely it will not appear with intensive use: the design is reliable. Battery specifications are standard - a 770 mAh lithium-ion battery. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work up to 90 hours in standby mode and up to 140 minutes in talk mode. Real tests have shown that in the conditions of Moscow networks (MTS or Beeline) the device works on average for about 2 days with a total talk time of 20 minutes, using games (up to 10-15 minutes) and an alarm clock. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2 hours. Menu Traditionally for Samsung phones, the main menu consists of numbered items with animated pictures. The screensavers are very pleasant, the images are not hackneyed. Menu sub-items are presented in the form of a list, each of the sub-items is also numbered. Quick navigation through the menu using digital sequences is provided. Let's move on to considering the capabilities of the device. Phone book The N620 can store up to 500 numbers (one for each name). Any name can be assigned an individual ring tone and service indicator backlight type (green, yellow, orange, purple, blue, or cyan). Also, you can record a voice tag for a number, there can be up to 20 in total. To record a tag, the phone asks you to say it twice, after which it correlates the tag with the desired phone number. Voice tags are sensitive to background noise. If possible, it is best to record them in silence. Call records This menu stores three lists, namely missed, dialed and received calls with the time and date of the call. Each list consists of ten positions (maximum). One of the disadvantages of the software should be considered that for repeated calls from the same number, the device makes several entries instead of one (for example, data on five missed calls from number 100 is filled in from the first to the fifth cell of the corresponding list). Here you can also look at the duration of the last conversation, the duration of calls made or received, there is the total time of all calls. Messages This item provides access to work with SMS and settings for broadcast messages. There are 5 templates for text messages; they are empty by default. The N600 and N620 models are the first Samsung phones to support Nokia Smart Messaging; in other words, they can send and receive pictures and melodies via SMS messages. Moreover, the transfer is possible not only to Samsung phones, but also to Nokia devices. For example, the melody sent from Nokia 6210 was perfectly read by the device under test, sending the melody in the opposite direction did not cause any problems either. The N620 has 10 graphic templates; The pictures are static but interesting. Storage space for 5 received pictures is provided. Voice functions The N620 has well-implemented voice functions, in particular, it is possible to create 18 marks in the phone book. In this menu, you can view them, delete them individually or all together, and set up labels for accessing menu items (up to 20 in total). Finally, here is the voice recorder menu, which allows you to make up to 3 recordings of 35 seconds each. During a conversation, the voice recorder does not work, which reduces its value. The last feature is an auto-responder offering 2 preset templates (in English) or the ability to write your own welcome text. The autoresponder will receive messages from those who could not communicate with you in person. This feature is especially handy when you don't feel like answering the phone, but you also can't miss an important call. Naturally, the device must be in the coverage area of the network, you will also have to pay for the connection time. Note that this is not about the voice mail function that is provided by the operator - this is only a hardware implementation. Melodies From idle mode, this menu can be accessed by pressing the top scroll key. Here you can select a tone or a ringtone, the phone has 21 polyphonic ringtones in total, a place for 2 custom ringtones (you can type in the editor) and 3 slots for received ringtones. Up to 12 polyphonic melodies presented can be replaced, but only from a PC. In the same menu, you can select a signal (tone) for incoming SMS messages from 5 polyphonic tones. If desired (and appropriate settings), only a light signal or a single tone will notify you of incoming SMS. A minute reminder is also activated here, which is triggered during a call. It is possible to enable sound notification of successful dialing. Settings This menu stores all kinds of settings, such as auto redial, backlight time, security settings, etc. The most interesting are the display settings, which allow, among other things, to adjust its contrast, select one of 6 backlight colors for the service indicator, and also specify what exactly will be displayed on the screen in standby mode - one of 5 animated screensavers or just an analog clock along with the rest information. Screensavers are very interesting and unusual, unfortunately, in the absence of a preview mode, in order to see the picture, you have to first configure it. The calendar The menu allows you to view the calendar for the month, set various types of events and bind a signal to them. Days with entries in the calendar are in bold. You can view all entries - just select the appropriate item. Only one entry is displayed on the screen at a time, their total number and the number of the current one are indicated at the top. Alarm clock For an alarm clock, you can choose one of 5 preset tones (quite interesting and well performing their main function - to get out of bed). There are several alarm clocks as such: single, daily, weekly; they are activated independently of each other. The alarm only works when the phone is on - sorry! If there is a missed alarm, when you turn it on, the corresponding inscription will appear on the screen. The calculator is very simple and not very convenient. To use the world time function, you need to set the local value and the destination - simply and clearly. Games The N620 offers three games, all of which use polyphonic accompaniment to create a pleasant gaming atmosphere. When you play, I'm sure that the eyes of others will be riveted only on you, because sometimes the sound effects are simply amazing! The games themselves are not very interesting - the situation is saved by a clear and loud sound. Squares is a variant of Tetris in which you need to connect not cubes, but shapes with different endings. The Fortress game invites you to become the defender of your native sky (which one, you choose for yourself: the list of cities is large). On the radar, you can see small plates that need to be shot down by rotating the anti-aircraft gun in a circle - not the most interesting thing to do. Ice Cave - an ice cave, inside which a penguin runs, trying to roll an egg without dropping it. Let's face it, the game is for an amateur (penguin lover) - the rest, I think, will be boring. WWW services Wap-browser version 1.2.1, all settings are standard. Impressions The highlight of this phone, of course, is a 16-voice polyphonic call - in this respect, the device is truly unique. It is known that polyphonic calls are heard worse than the piercing signals of standard telephone tweeters, but in this case this is not entirely true. Ringer volume is sufficient in most situations, according to this parameter N620 is currently one of the best models with a polyphonic ringer. To be honest, when testing the phone, I first listened to all the melodies several times - they sound very good! The vibrating alert in this model is rather weak, you can't feel it either from the outerwear pocket or from the holster. The sensitivity of the device is average, nothing extraordinary. The volume of the speaker is always enough, the sound is clear, except for the first seconds of dialing, when noise is clearly audible (apparently, this is due to the operation of the screen backlight). The phone has a sufficient number of functions, it will be enough for most unpretentious users. The main technological innovations in this device are polyphonic sound and the function of transmitting graphic messages and melodies.
