SAMSUNG SGH-N500. Mobile phone review
Review
The dimensions of the phones are small - 110 x 46 x 23 mm, weight is only 95 grams. Due to the absence of an external antenna, the phone can be carried in a shirt or jeans pocket. It is assumed that this model will be supplied to our market in 4 color options - white, black, blue and silver. The keyboard is made in the style familiar to us from the latest models from Samsung. The keys are plastic, matte, except for the soft keys located under the screen. The navigation key, despite its round shape, is only two-position, that is, you can only move up or down with it. In my opinion, the key turned out to be not very comfortable: it is too small in diameter, it causes some discomfort during operation (especially when pressed with the thumb). Numeric keys are located at a sufficient distance from each other, you can't call them uncomfortable - quite a familiar keyboard with semi-hard pressing. The backlighting of the keys is blue, matching the color of the display. The problem is that in the dark only the left and center rows of the keyboard are clearly visible, and the symbols on the keys located on the right are practically invisible, which is explained by the use of small font. The screen of the SGH-N500 has a very intense blue backlight, thanks to which the information is easy to read both in the dark and in the light. In terms of technical characteristics, the display is similar to those used in other Samsung models, in particular, it has a resolution of 128x64 pixels, which allows displaying up to 3 text lines of 16 characters, a line of icons and labels for soft keys. In standby mode, the battery indicator (3 divisions), vibrating alert icon, signal strength, etc. is displayed on the screen. The ability to choose a screen saver has become quite traditional for cell phones. This model also has 5 images, partly animated; in addition, you can set the screensaver in the form of an analog clock. Unfortunately, the N500 doesn't have a splash screen preview, so you have to set the picture first, and only then, when you enter the standby mode, you can see what it is. Above the screen is a service indicator repeating the shape of the case. Any of the 5 provided backlight colors (green, orange, red, purple and blue) can be selected by the user as standard. The phone uses a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 770 mAh, which allows the device, according to the manufacturer, to work up to 90 hours in standby mode and up to 3.5 hours in talk mode. Under the conditions of the Moscow network MTS N500 functioned for about 2.5 days with a total talk time of 25 minutes. At the same time, other functions of the phone, such as games and a diary, were used minimally (about 10-15 minutes). With the reduction of the talk time to 5 minutes a day, the device was able to work for 3 days. By the way, showing a completely discharged battery on the screen, the phone can work for about 2 more hours. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2 hours. The headset jack on the right is covered by a rubber plug that is attached to the case. Menu The organization of the menu in this phone is standard: in the main menu you will see the names of items and animated icons, in the submenu - lists of functions. Quick navigation using digital sequences is provided. Consider the main menu items and the capabilities of the device. But before that, a few words about the Russification of the phone. SGH-N500 does not support Russian input, but short messages in Russian are readable. Localization is standard, there are no special complaints about it. Phone book Up to 200 telephone numbers are stored in the machine's memory. Any name can be assigned an individual ring tone and service indicator backlight type (green, yellow, orange, purple, blue, or cyan). Voice tags are recorded for 20 numbers. The recording process itself (which is desirable to be done in silence) occurs as follows: the phone asks you to pronounce the mark twice, after which it correlates it with the desired number. There is a search by name, and this story about the possibilities of the phone book can be considered over. Call records. This menu lists the last 10 missed, 10 received and 10 sent calls with the date and time of the call. Each entry is displayed individually. The disadvantage of all lists is that 10 calls from the same number fill the entire corresponding list, while other phones, as you understand, are not saved. Here you can also get information about the duration of all calls or the last one, as well as find out the time of all outgoing or incoming calls. Messages. This menu gives access to writing and receiving short messages. There are 5 templates that are customized according to the needs of the user. Your phone comes preloaded with 10 graphics (plus the ability to receive three more) that can be sent to Samsung or Nokia devices using Nokia Smart Messaging format. However, in the N500, unlike the N600/N620, there is no way to convey a melody - only graphics. Other options provided by the Messages menu are standard. Voice functions. The N500 is well implemented voice functions, in particular, it is possible to create 20 marks in the phone book. In this menu, you can view them, delete them individually or all together, and set up labels for accessing menu items (up to 20 in total). Finally, here are the voice recorder settings, which allows you to make up to 3 recordings of 35 seconds each. During a conversation, the voice recorder does not work, which reduces its value. The last feature is an auto-responder offering 2 preset templates (in English) or the ability to write your own welcome text. The autoresponder will receive messages from those who could not communicate with you in person. This feature is especially handy when you don't feel like answering the phone, but you also can't miss an important call. Naturally, the device must be in the coverage area of the network; connection time you will have to pay separately. Note that this is not about the voice mail function that is provided by the operator - this is only a hardware implementation. tones. This device has a regular, non-polyphonic ringer. There are 7 tones and 23 ringtones in total. In addition, if desired, the user can download up to 3 motives from the Internet using a special service or record two melodies on his own in the built-in editor. You can use one of the 10 preset tones to alert you to incoming SMS messages. A characteristic feature of Samsung phones is the ability to set the connection signal in such a way that it works after dialing the number. The call scheme can include both a vibrating alert and a melody, as well as the types of signals listed above (separately); silent mode (only vibrating call) is activated with one touch from idle mode (# key). Settings. This menu stores all kinds of settings, such as auto redial, backlight time, security settings, etc. The most interesting are the display settings, which allow, among other things, to adjust its contrast, select one of 6 backlight colors for the service indicator, and also specify what exactly will be displayed on the screen in standby mode - one of 5 animated screensavers or just an analog clock along with other information. Screensavers are very interesting and unusual; unfortunately, in the absence of a preview mode, in order to see the picture, you have to install it immediately. Organizer. The menu allows you to view the calendar for the month, set up various types of events and set an alarm for them. Days with entries in the calendar are in bold. You can view all entries - just select the appropriate item. Only one record is displayed on the screen, their total number and the number of the current one are indicated at the top. Signal, or simply an alarm clock. The N500 has several alarms (once, daily, weekly) that are activated independently of each other and work only when the phone is turned on. If one of the calls was missed, a corresponding entry will appear on the screen when turned on. Any of the 5 tones presented in the phone can serve as an alarm signal. In addition to the calendar, there is a To Do List, which performs slightly different functions, but allows you to set an alert signal for events. Hidden in the same submenu is the calculator and the world time function. Games. There are 11 games in the phone: Casino, Roulette, Blackjack, Racing, Sniper, Snake, Mole, Othello, Hexa, Puzzle, Bacteria. And after that, who will say that the SGH-N500 is not a youth device? Every user can find a game to their liking. WWW services. Wap-browser version 1.2.1 with standard settings. Impressions The volume of the call is not always enough - in a noisy street you can not hear it. The strength of the vibrating alert is such that it can be felt from the holster on the belt, but not from the outer pocket of a jacket or bag. The sound quality is excellent: speech is heard well, no echo was noticed. In terms of sensitivity, the N500 is similar to other Samsung phones, that is, in general, everything is very good. Functionally, the device is almost identical to the N620 model and somewhat surpasses the R200 phone in terms of richness of possibilities.
