PHILIPS GENIE 2000 Mobile Phone Review
Review
The phone has an underlined fashionable design. The body is slightly curved. Graceful lines and buttons of an unusual shape are emphasized by an unusual menu - a rotating carousel of icons. We can definitely say that today no other model has a similar menu. Despite the small size, the case is closer to the phones of the traditional form. The phone, unusually light (99g) and flat, fits comfortably in the hand. However, given its width, it seems to be more suitable for men. This idea is also suggested by some distinct elasticity of the buttons. The pressing force of the buttons is such that it excludes the possibility of arbitrary dialing. However, there is a keyboard lock. The display is extremely informative, none of the settings that differ from the usual will work "blindly". As with any device of such a low weight, the advantages of Genie are somewhat lost when using a conventional leather case. The display device is not recessed into the case, and this causes an ugly adhesion of the transparent film. Gradually I came to the fact that I carry the pipe "naked" in my shirt pocket and only occasionally "dress" when I need to hang it on my belt. You can use "Performance Case ICT-09" horizontal holster for Ericsson T10 phone instead of a case, it is perfect for Genie, very beautiful and comfortable. Perhaps this is the best option. Communication with the phone without a case is much more interesting, and when carried, it will be reliably protected. The body of the device is quite solid, but some freedom is observed when you press the battery, spring-loaded from the inside. The antenna is unscrewable, has a retractable part, which helps out noticeably in poor reception conditions. There is a socket for connecting an external antenna. Antenna adapter from Genie DB does not fit, original accessories can probably be bought, but they are expensive. The antenna jack, as well as the universal connector jack (power supply, HF, PC-Link) are covered with rubber caps. They hold well, reliably prevent dirt from getting into the connectors, but are not fixed to the case in any way. During a call, the display shows a timer, at the end of the call, information about the time and cost of the call can be displayed. The device has one game - "Bricks" (Arkanoid). Menu A large graphic display of 100x64 pixels made it possible to place a sufficiently large amount of information, including an animated menu in the form of a carousel of icons. Menu in Russian. It seems that the authors deliberately refused to use "multifunctional" keys that change their purpose depending on the inscription on the display (Nokia, Siemens and some other manufacturers do this now). Menu icons have captions whose font size can be changed (zoom function). In addition to icons, the menu has a title. This is very convenient for navigation, the title always reflects the name of the top subsection. Menu test, entries in the phone book, all information that occupies more than one screen, scrolls very smoothly, without "jumps", which increases the comfort of working with the phone. All animation in the menu, as well as smooth text scrolling, can be disabled. During a conversation, the menu changes and allows you to turn on / off the microphone, write down a number in a notepad, send SMS, view the phone book, add an entry to the book, check the voice box, send a DTMF tone command. All these actions do not interrupt the call. Favorite settings or menu items can be assigned hotkeys and/or voice tags (up to 10). When connected to a car headset, special car settings are activated, some menu items are modified accordingly, the activated modes are displayed on the display in the form of understandable icons. signals The ring volume of the Genie is quite high, I've heard even louder only on the Nokia 3210. You can record your own melody. The melody input interface is made in an original way and unexpectedly convenient. It is a musical staff, on which, by pressing the corresponding keys, you can enter musical signs. Even without an idea of musical literacy, it is easy to score a melody, using, for example, the collection of songs "Sing, Friends" :-). For those who know musical notation, it will not be difficult to rewrite any melody recorded in the alphanumeric notation of Nokia or Siemens phones. Unfortunately, when using Caller ID (Clip) it is not possible to assign different melodies to different numbers of incoming calls. The caller's name is displayed if the caller's number is in the phone book. You cannot change the volume / tone of other signals (pressing buttons, receiving SMS messages, depleting the battery), they can only be turned on or off. Sound signals can be accompanied by a rather perceptible vibrating alert. There are seven settings profiles to choose from - Normal, Silent, Offline, Headset, Car, Outdoor, Meeting. Three were enough for me, to which I attributed three hot keys and voice commands. Now it's enough for me to press the "OK" button, say "Quiet!" and the device will turn off all signals except for the vibrating alert. Sound modes are clearly displayed on the phone display with different icons. There is a per-minute call duration signal. The first beep is heard at 0:45, the second at 1:45, the third at 2:45, and so on. This makes it possible to know in advance when the next minute of the conversation ends. The interlocutor does not hear this signal. The alarm clock rings loudly, while the phone also vibrates (if vibration is enabled). The organizer's signal is the same as when an SMS arrives, it may be accompanied by vibration. SMS To my great joy, I did not find the notorious T9 accelerated text input system in the phone. Fortunately - because today no device that has such a function supports the input of Russian text. Although, if you exchange SMS in English, you may consider this a disadvantage. All received messages are saved. They must be deleted manually, there is no "Delete All" function. There are several standard messages, however, in English. You can fill your messages, save them and use them later. The transmission of previously recorded messages is not very logical. First you need to select the "Read messages" item, select a message from the list, open the menu and only then select the "Send message" option. It is possible to automatically insert a signature under the message. Your phone can store two SMS message center numbers. The second center is convenient to use for sending messages between networks of different operators. For example, direct messaging between MTS and Beeline is not possible, but you can use the SMS center in Turkey, which supports roaming with these two operators. The SMS text is funny, taking up more of the screen. It automatically scrolls smoothly from top to bottom from the first line to the last. The upper fixed line of the display shows the sender's number (or his name, if the sender's number is in the phone book). Phone book The phone book appears in the menu as "Names". Cyrillic is not supported. If you wish, you can use part of the Greek alphabet, but it is not available with all SIM cards. The telephone set supports up to 40 characters for the name in the book, but my SIM card limited this number to 14 letters. Somewhat tiring is the need to specify the type of the entered number - voice, fax or modem when writing a new name in the book. Apparently, this is necessary to organize the work of the fax modem built into the phone, which I have not yet had to try. An entry in the phone book called "Your number" turned out to be extremely necessary. I don’t remember my cell number and this record helped me out more than once :-). Voice dialing in my device worked very well, voice tags were recognized almost without errors. You can record up to ten voice tags of 2 seconds each. To record a tag, you must select a number from the phone book and the "Voice dialing" option. The voice tag is repeated twice and then stored in memory. If you need to make a "voice" call, you need to hold down the "Ok" key, wait for the "Speak" icon and say the phrase. The phone repeats it and starts dialing. The most surprising thing is that phrases uttered by another person are consistently recognized. In my case, the phone correctly understood commands uttered by both male and female voices! Alarm clock, organizer and voice recorder The alarm clock has the ability inherent in music centers - you can ask that the bell sound only on weekdays. It is possible to set the alarm to sound once, on a specific day and hour. Although the organizer is more suitable for the latter. The alarm clock also works when the device is turned off. The organizer can store up to 40 events. There are three types of events that you can save - "Meeting", "To do" and (surprise!) "Vacation". You can set the beginning and end of the event, frequency, type of reminder (5-10-60 min, hour, day, week, no reminder) The electronic voice recorder can record one message up to 20 seconds long. Sensitivity, speech quality They can be described in one word "worthy". The device did not demonstrate any extraordinary performance compared to other models, but it was always at the level of "no worse". In good conditions, the phone has the usual performance in terms of sound quality. At the minimum signal level, when the Nokia-3210 began to lose frames and speech became unintelligible, when a strong echo appeared in the Siemens C-25, the speech in the Genie-2000 simply acquired a somewhat metallic tint. Comparisons with other phones were not made. The volume during a call can be changed by pressing the keys on the left side of the phone. The phone loses the network extremely reluctantly, it registers again in about 2-4 seconds. Messages like "SOS/112 only" do not appear. You can understand that you are in the service area of a foreign operator by the disappearance of the service symbol - the image of the antenna, while the field level indicator shows the presence of a signal. Battery Battery: has a capacity of 550 mAh. The actual duration of a trained battery with 6-8 minutes of calls per day and 5-10 sent/received SMS is 72 hours (three days). The battery charge scale is graduated quite accurately. One of the four divisions of the scale means that at least 25% of the capacity is left, this allows you to accurately predict the time the phone will turn off. Discharge is indicated by an empty battery symbol on the display and a change in color of the LED signal indicator from green to red. Minimum charging time 1,5 hours. There is a warning in the instructions that if charging is carried out using a faulty or incompatible charger, the message "Accessory. Disable" will appear on the display. A double capacity battery is available for sale. Unused Opportunities There are, unfortunately, a lot of them. The possibilities of the phone would be much greater if the operators of cellular networks supported such necessary functions as call cost counters, limiting the total amount and others. The currency converter does not work due to the absence of the information channel "Currency rates". The capabilities of the phone are superior to those of GSM network operators in Russia. glitches I did not find any features in my device. I met with complaints from other users about errors in the software. Defective devices cannot record more than five voice tags for dialing, and once recorded, these tags cannot be overwritten. Knowing this feature, it is easy to check the phone's performance even in the communication salon. Summary An apparatus for those who want to have maximum convenience for a reasonable fee. The phone has a significant number of functions, perhaps, except for WAP and infrared port, it has everything. The device is definitely stylish. It is quite obvious that the authors did not seek to create a pipe "in order to speak." The original ideas applied in this device will appeal to fans of non-standard, not similar to other phones.
