Panasonic GD93. Mobile phone review
Review
This model is available in two colors: silver (gun metallic) and blue (blue). I had a silver phone for testing. The quality of the paint application is quite high: it will peel off the device no earlier than after six months - a year of active use and only if you carry the phone in your pocket along with the keys. By the way, the size of the phone fits perfectly in the front pocket of jeans or in a jacket pocket, without causing any inconvenience. As usual, the antenna is external, fixed. Next to the antenna on the body is a service indicator that lights up during an incoming call. In standby mode, the indicator does not work (in most other devices, this function is implemented in the same way), its color depends on the color of the display backlight. In the photo, for example, the service indicator has a blue backlight. It can be turned off from the menu. As in other devices of this company, this model has a built-in speakerphone (speaker on the back of the case). The speakerphone quality is not bad - in most cases you can talk, although, of course, you won't be able to use this function in a crowded place. This service is especially relevant for drivers, since according to the new regulation, it is impossible to talk on a cell phone while driving without a telephone headset or a speakerphone kit. The presence of this function in the device itself will save money, since the hands-free kits themselves are not cheap, and their installation is estimated at more than $ 100. However, the built-in speakerphone cannot provide the sound quality that car kits provide. Buying a headset, of course, will cost much less, but, in my opinion, talking with it is not very convenient, it is more comfortable to use the speakerphone. The package includes a strap, thanks to which the phone can be worn on the hand. The strap hole is located on the right side of the device. In the 92nd model, it was located under the antenna. The keyboard of the GD93 is made of plastic and painted to match the body color, which is quite nice. The keys are quite elastic, easy to press, and in addition to the tone, a mechanical click is heard. The accuracy of the execution of the technical part of the device is evidenced by a plug that covers the headset connector. To pull it out, you have to pry off the plug with something - you cannot open it with your finger. The fact that it is rubber and does not attach to the case seems to me a disadvantage (you can accidentally lose it). But there is still a certain reason for this: not everyone uses a telephone headset, and if it is used, then it is not at all necessary to carry a connector cap with you. The last thing that needs lighting is the SIM card holder and battery mount. When inserting a SIM card, you just need to push it all the way into the slot. Even if the battery is not inserted, the card cannot fall out, as it is held by a plastic tab. To remove the card, just press the "tab" and slide it. The installed battery creates an additional load on the card and eliminates the possibility of its accidental movements in the holder. The battery in this model is Li-Ion with a capacity of 650 mAh, which allows the phone to work in talk mode up to 200 minutes and up to 170 hours in standby mode. The real operating time of the device is 3 - 4 days with conversations up to 20 minutes a day. The battery makes it possible to use not only the phone, but also the speakerphone, which, it seems to me, is very energy-intensive. The battery, which is very small in size, is attached to the phone case on one side with the help of protrusions that fit into the groove at the top, and at the bottom with a latch. The fastening is reliable, I think that even after a year of use, the battery will be firmly located in the socket. I was struck by how accurately the battery fit to the body of the phone. So, running your hand along the body, you practically do not feel the gaps. Therefore, special protrusions are made on its body to remove the battery. The travel charger has a latched connector on the sides. Improper connection to the phone is not possible, as you simply cannot insert the connector without great effort. Display The phone has a large graphic display with up to 6 lines of information. Of these, 4 lines of text, a line of service symbols and signatures for the top keys, more precisely, for the right key. In standby mode, the screen displays the name of the operator's network, battery level, network signal strength (4 bars), as well as the date and time (depending on your settings). There is also a possibility to choose one of the two animated screensavers that are initially present in the phone. If one of them is installed, the splash screen will be displayed on the idle screen. An interesting feature of the display is the ability to change the backlight, which can be selected from 7 available colors: red-lilac, light blue, amber, dark green, dark blue, light blue, light green (Magenta, Light Blue, Amber, Dark Green, Dark Blue, Pale Blue, Light Green). For some reason, in the Russian version of the menu, these colors are called Type1, Type2, etc. Apparently, the developers decided not to take risks and avoid translation errors, as was the case in GD92. The user can adjust the display contrast to their liking. It is possible to customize the welcome message that will appear when the phone is turned on. I mentioned the greeting here because this item is located in the screen settings menu. Here, oddly enough, is the backlight control of the keyboard (you can turn it on or off) and control of the call indicator, located on the back of the case. Menu, phone book and other functions The menu is accessed by pressing the right button below the screen (it is signed). The main menu consists of two rows of icons, each of which is assigned a number for quick access. All submenus also have their own numbers, and you can quickly get to the desired item by simply dialing the number sequence. But if you do not know it, then using the navigation key you can sequentially move through the menu. The navigation key has four directions in which you can move around the main menu. In some menus, only vertical or horizontal movement is available, as indicated by the arrows on the display. The menu is well thought out, and guessing what is where is not difficult. The localization of the menu is quite acceptable. If you have any questions, please refer to the instructions included in the package: it covers the work with the phone in sufficient detail. The instruction is very high quality and differs for the better from its predecessors supplied with previous models of devices. In the phone book of the device, you can save not only the number and name, but also the postal address, and this is due to the fact that the GD93 allows you to work with e-mail. The phone's memory capacity is 100 numbers in addition to the SIM card memory. Phones can be divided into groups (up to 9 in total), the names of which you choose yourself. For each group, you can configure a personal ringtone from the general list, the color of the display backlight, as well as the image that will appear on the screen when you call (by the way, all this can be done for any number in the phone book). There are 10 drawings in total. It is possible to assign a personal number to the "P" key. There is also a list of speed dial numbers: to call them, just press a number from 1 to 9 and the call key. The phone stores the last 10 calls made, received or missed, along with the date and time of the call. To view these lists, you should press the call button and select the desired list. The voice call function is implemented in a very strange way. Voice tags can only be set in the Voice commands item of the Personalization menu (but not in the phone book). Next, you again need to select the Voice Calls submenu, which suggests that there were supposed to be commands to access menu items. But for some reason they were not implemented. A total of 10 tags are provided, which can be added to any numbers recorded in the phone book of both the SIM card and the device itself. After selecting a number, you will have to say the voice tag twice, after which it will be recorded. I hasten to disappoint you: for different numbers, you can write the same label, that is, name the same word, as a result, the last recorded one will be typed. There is no check, as in Motorola v50, at all. The voice dial itself is also rather strange: to activate, you need to press and hold the navigation key in any of the directions, then say the word that will be matched with the label, as a result of which the phone number will be shown to you, but not dialed. To dial it, you need to press the call button again. The system is extremely inconvenient and nullifies all the advantages of voice dialing. Email, SMS, WAP E-mail works on the PPP protocol, you can store up to 40 incoming and 10 outgoing messages. Access to the mail settings is in the Messages menu, where you can also configure the reception and sending of SMS messages. Everything is very standard and simple here, although if you wish, you can delve into the mass of settings and see what happens. I completely forgot to mention that the phone does not support Russian in messages, and even in the phone book. Implemented support for Greek, but soon there will be support for the Russian language. Also, a Russian dictionary will appear for T9 predictive text input. It's no secret that sending and receiving e-mail messages from phones has been difficult due to encoding confusion. This problem will soon be solved with the help of the new Panamail service. Official phone users (registration on the website is required using the warranty card included in the delivery set) can receive a free mailbox on the website www.panamail.ru, which can be used as a mobile one. This means that now, thanks to this server, users of GD92, GD93 and other models that support e-mail will be able to receive messages in Russian, despite the confusion of encodings and other problems. The length of one message should not exceed 800 characters, but in the future it is planned to introduce an additional service that will cut long messages into several pieces. For many, the ability to read a message from a mobile phone, and besides, in Russian, will be a decisive factor when choosing a phone. wap-browser configuration version 1.1. proceeds quite simply and does not deserve special mention. Speech quality, sensitivity, calls The Panasonic GD93 made a very good impression on me, not least because of the voice quality. The sound in the speaker is painted in soft tones, which is very pleasant. The flip side of this advantage is the problem of audibility in places with poor reception conditions: then the speech of the interlocutor is quite difficult to make out precisely because of this softness. In fairness, it should be noted that in the vast majority of cases (of course, in the city), the interlocutor's speech is heard very well and there are no complaints about the device. Subjectively, the sensitivity of the phone is average, it feels absolutely identical to that of the GD92. Compared to the Panasonic GD92, it seemed to me that there were no frequent drops out of the network, which entailed re-registration and additional energy consumption. However, if the person you are calling does not pick up the phone for a long time, the phone sometimes randomly ends the call. The vibrating alert can be set to work in two modes: continuous and intermittent. The vibration is well felt, and there are no questions to it. True, in a jacket pocket you may not feel the vibrating alert. And now about the most interesting, namely the types of calls: you have 9 tones and 11 extremely pleasant, unusual melodies at your disposal. As usual, the disadvantage of such a call is its poor audibility in crowded places. If you didn’t like anything, then you can create your own melodies (no more than three) or record a greeting (melody from a microphone), so that later it will be played as a call. By default, the voice of the cuckoo is set - a rather pleasant and original call. In the built-in voice recorder, you can save two voice memos of 15 seconds each (during a call only). To do this, a separate key is provided on the side surface of the phone. When the voice recorder's memory becomes full and you try to make a new recording, the oldest recording will be erased. Also, during a conversation, a beautiful picture is displayed on the screen, informing about the connection status, which is especially convenient when you use the speakerphone. When the session ends, the conversation time is displayed. Other Functions Of the other functions of the phone, it should be noted the presence of a calculator and a currency converter, and if the latter, in my opinion, is not entirely convenient, then the calculator is quite pleasant, although not ideal. It is possible to set up to 4 alarms that will work once or daily. At the same time, as a signal, you can use both an ordinary squeak and any melody from those presented in the phone. The alarm clocks also function when the phone is switched off, in which case the device turns on. In addition to the alarm clock, there is a convenient function to turn the phone on and off at a set time every day, allowing you to save batteries at night. Last but not least, the clock can be configured to work in two time zones and automatically adjust the time (the service must be supported by the operator). The format in which the date and time is displayed on the screen is easily changed. Сonclusion Quite a good phone, which is a continuation of the line of the 90s devices from Panasonic. The biggest disadvantages of this phone are a weak call, or rather, the tone of the melodies (everything is in order with the tones) and the average quality of the speakerphone: it makes no sense to use it in a car with open windows, as in most of our cars, where the sound insulation leaves much to be desired . The sensitivity of the device is average - no achievements or obvious failures. Quite acceptable for the city connection. The pluses include the fact that the phone works up to 4 days, while you can actively use the speakerphone and other functions.
