NOKIA 7650

The opening mechanism of the new smartphone deserves a separate description. The keyboard and battery are located at the bottom of the device, the rest of the hardware is at the top. The parts are connected to each other by guides along which they slide relative to each other. The movement is quite tight - you have to apply force to open or close the device. I am more than sure that over time the mechanism will not become loose.

In order to slide out the keyboard, you need to pull the back of the smartphone towards you or rest your thumb on the top and push it away from you. The second method, with certain skill, is preferable, since the entire procedure is done with one hand. You can also try to shake the smartphone vigorously while holding it by the keyboard - there is no play in this model. When extended, the rear part protrudes only half its height, which increases the strength of the already reliable structure.

You can close the device with one hand by placing it on a hard surface and pressing the top until it stops. There are no mechanisms that lock the phone in a closed state, but the device cannot accidentally open, since, as already mentioned, its movement is tight.

The keyboard is made of plastic; The keys are small, but comfortable to press. The size of the smartphone allows you to operate the keyboard with two hands, which, of course, is quite unusual, but, nevertheless, it significantly speeds up typing short messages. When closed, the device asks whether the keypad should be locked. For obvious reasons, this question only applies to a few keys on the top panel. By the way, opening the device entails its automatic unlocking.

The battery compartment is covered with a plastic cover, which is much less reliable than other structural elements: in the tested unit there was play in almost all directions, but it only appeared when pressing on the cover with a finger. I think that the presence of play is due to the vertical position of the latch. The lid is also held in place by the protrusions at the top, but this is clearly not enough.

Removing the cover, we see the battery itself - long familiar to us from the old BLB-2 models. Let me remind you that we are talking about a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 750 mAh. According to the manufacturer, this battery is capable of providing from 2 to 4 hours of talk time and from 90 to 230 hours of standby time. In reality, with 10 minutes of talking and 15 minutes of using various applications per day, the device functioned for about 3 days. If you do not call, the work time increases to 5 days (from 15 to 30 minutes of work per day). The battery charges within one and a half hours. The connector for connecting the charger is located at the bottom; there are no other interface connectors. Unfortunately, the use of a high-capacity battery is not provided: this model only works with BLB-2.

Let's move on to looking at the top of the smartphone. The 7650 uses a TFT matrix (non-touch), displaying up to 4096 colors and having a physical size of 35x41 mm with a resolution of 176x208 pixels. Photos taken with the built-in camera look very good on the display, and the same can be said about the menus and programs. In bright sunlight, the image becomes less clear, but the information on the screen is easy to read. Naturally, the contrast is adjustable; There is also a built-in light sensor with two backlight values (minimum and maximum) that change depending on environmental conditions. It seemed to me that the energy saving mode is always turned on outside, but indoors the backlight level is always at its maximum. The sensor (small white circle) is located at the top right of the case. In standby mode, the screen backlight does not work, but you can set, for example, the clock and date.

On the left above the screen there are two slightly recessed circles (resembling binoculars) - this is a distance sensor. When using the speakerphone, it reacts to objects: if you move your hand over it or bring the phone to your ear, it will instantly switch from speakerphone mode to normal mode - the simplest foolproof protection previously used in some other phones.

Below the screen there are two function keys. Between them, just below, there is a joystick made of rubber and extremely convenient to use: in addition to the four directions in which it can be moved, the joystick also responds to pressing, which allows you to control the phone with almost one hand - in terms of ergonomics, the Nokia 7650 is one of the best today devices in the world. However, this is the merit of not only the joystick, but also the organization of the menu, but more on that later. There is also a Menu key on the front panel, a short press of which brings up the general menu, a long press brings up a list of running applications that you can switch between.

On the right side surface there is a key to turn the device on/off. In standby mode, you can use it to quickly change the profile, lock the keypad or the phone itself. On the left side surface there is a key for activating voice dialing, which also includes the speakerphone function during a call.

Hidden at the top end of the smartphone is an IR port and an unremarkable headset jack.

The attentive reader is probably already perplexed - not a single word about where to insert the SIM card! To perform this operation, you need to open the device, pull up the plastic of the upper part - and voila, you have a connector in front of you. By the way, the plastic cover covering the SIM holder also has some play.

Finally, a few words about the camera. In this model it is very simple: the focal length is 3.5 mm, there is no autofocus, but, you see, it would be strange to expect more. The screen is used as a viewfinder, which is very convenient. To work with the camera, the 7650 has an application, which, by the way, is called Camera. The program allows you to set a default name for image files and select the quality with which shooting will be done. The file, the maximum size of which is 33 KB with a size of 640x480 pixels, is immediately written to the JPG format. The quality of pictures taken with minimal compression (High in the menu) can be considered ideal for the 7650 screen. There are three shooting modes: Normal, Portrait (resolution 80x96) and Night. In the latter case, the light sensitivity of the matrix is artificially increased, which leads to an increase in noise in the photograph and its size. In my opinion, the standard mode is optimal for most cases, including shooting in dimly lit rooms. There is no limit on the number of photos - it all depends on the amount of free memory: with maximum quality you can take a little more than 40 photos, some of which will then have to be deleted or transferred to a PC.

In the 7650 we tested, the camera's vertical resolution was lower than its horizontal resolution. This can be explained both by problems with the matrix itself and by a defect in the plastic lens. Most likely, this feature is typical for the 7650 model as a whole. But don’t judge strictly: the camera is just an additional function, nothing more, you won’t be able to use it as the main camera, the quality is not the same.

Menu

Nokia 7650 runs Symbian OS and has a corresponding graphical interface. The user sees the Phone application on the screen, the signal level (7 bars), time and date (analog or digital clock), operator name, battery charge level (7 bars), and icons that activate various modes are displayed at the top. Finally, the labels for two soft keys are displayed at the bottom, by default they are Camera and Contacts. But you can change them, that is, assign a different application to each key. In general, the customization options are quite wide. So, any image can be used as a screen saver; a clock or your text reminder can act as a screen saver.

By pressing the Menu button on the front panel, we get to the main Menu. Applications in it are presented in the form of icons or a list; Navigation is carried out using the joystick, application selection is carried out by pressing. Everything is very simple and, most importantly, convenient.

Before moving on to a detailed consideration of applications, I will say a few words about localization and memory, the volume of which is only 4 megabytes and cannot be expanded. By and large, if you do not install many additional applications, this volume is enough for most tasks that a smartphone can solve. However, the experience of the 9210 suggests that soon after the release of the 7650 there will be a lot of interesting games and business programs, so the user will find himself in a situation of difficult choice.

In addition to PC Suite for Nokia 7650, the disc included with the 7650 contains similar packages in 28 languages. You can install only 2 additional packages at the same time (English by default). The Russian language is present in the list, but you can expect that other companies will offer localization files, as was the case with 9210.

By the way, PC Suite for Nokia 7650 allows you to view the contents of directories on your phone, backup information, create directories, and install additional applications. All this is done using Bluetooth or IR connections, since there is no cable included in the package.

To find out the capabilities of this smartphone, let’s take a brief look at the main applications installed by default.

Contacts

The phone book allows you to enter almost any number of entries; the only limit is the total memory capacity. For one name, you can write First and Last Name (two lines), Company Name, Position, Phone Number, Mobile, Fax and Email Address - 8 fields in total. You cannot add anything beyond the established 8 fields, that is, the amount of information entered for the addressee is strictly fixed. To be fair, it is worth noting that for each name you can write a large text note, as well as set a photo that will be displayed on the screen when there is an incoming call. Finally, any of the fields can be renamed, for example, called Position Date of Birth. You can assign voice tags to 25 names in the phone book (the function works fine, there are no problems with recognition).

An interesting feature of the 7650 is that for each name you can assign a phone number, a number for MMS messages, and an email address by default, which makes it much easier to find an address by name when creating, for example, an MMS message.

There are groups of subscribers for which you can set a group ringing signal. One subscriber can be recorded in several groups at once. No other actions can be performed using standard software.

To summarize, I want to say that the phone book in the Nokia 7650 is certainly more advanced than in conventional mobile phones, but quite simple compared to the address book on a PDA. The 7650 is essentially the first device in its class, and many applications have not yet been developed, as we will see later in other examples.

In any list (contacts, message list, etc.), you can select all entries from the menu at once or mark the necessary ones by simultaneously pressing the ABC key and the joystick. Unfortunately, you cannot send, for example, contacts in this way - you can only delete them all together. To send a recording to another phone or PDA, you need to mark it and select the sending type. Let me remind you that the 7650 supports SyncML technology.

log

This menu provides access to lists of missed, sent and received calls, and you yourself set the time period during which the entries will be saved (by default it is a month). For each call, the call type (voice, data), duration, date, time and, of course, number, if one has been defined, are indicated. There is a convenient function for filtering calls by type (data, GPRS, voice, incoming, outgoing, messages). This menu also calculates the duration and cost of calls. By the way, the duration of a conversation is displayed on the screen during a conversation.

Messaging

In addition to standard short messages, you can create MMS, as well as send/receive your mail (POP3/IMAP4/SMTP). The email client on the 7650 is almost the same as on the 9210. You can create templates for any messages; 10 templates are already pre-installed for SMS. I will not dwell in detail on all the functions activated in this menu; I will only note that everything works perfectly, there are no problems with the settings. On the Beeline network, MMS messages from this device were transferred perfectly to another 7650, but an attempt to send an MMS to a SonyEricsson T68i was unsuccessful, although the reception was successful. The fact is that the devices have different capabilities for displaying images, that is, at this level the devices are incompatible.

Camera

Read the description of this application above.

Calendar

The second most important application for a smartphone. The 7650 provides several options for viewing the calendar - per month (dates for which events are set are marked with a corner), per week (by day, broken down by hour) and, of course, per day (also by hour).

For some reason, only three types of events are supported: Meeting, Memo and Anniversary. For each of them, you can configure a warning signal. This, in fact, exhausts all the capabilities of the organizer - no settings or tools for working with events, including viewing all records! As you can see, the organizer is very ascetic. One gets the impression that it was created in great haste and many of the necessary functions simply did not have time to be implemented.

images

This application saves pictures taken using the built-in camera. Photos are presented in the form of miniatures, each of which you can view, enlarge or rotate. I want to say again that the photos on the screen look more than decent.

Services

Wap browser version 1.2.1, which is quite strange, since version 2.0 would be much more appropriate here.

Profiles

I think there is no need to explain the name of this menu item: everything is the same as on regular phones.

Favorites

For almost any file (note, image, sound), you can create a shortcut that automatically goes to Favorites. Sometimes this function comes in handy.

To-do (To-do list)

A regular to-do list, for which you can specify a name and date, set one of three priorities, or set a completion mark.

Connectivity

All settings related to connections are stored here, including modem, infrared and bluetooth settings, which remain an internal function of Nokia devices. An attempt to configure the device so that it would automatically connect to an Ericsson headset ended in failure: not only was the Bluetooth connection interrupted, but the connection (telephone conversation) was sometimes terminated in an arbitrary manner.

Extras (Extra)

This menu gives access to several applications at once: notes, simple text files (which the user creates independently), a very nice and convenient calculator, converter, voice recorder, ringtone editor and clock. The last point includes settings for the alarm clock, which in the 7650 is very simple: one-time, no repeating events, days or other nonsense - minimalism in everything.

It is worth recalling that installed Java applications will be placed in the Extras menu behind the Apps icon.

SIMs.

The 7650 does not provide integration of numbers from the SIM card with numbers from the phone book, so in order to use the numbers from the SIM card, you will have to transfer all the numbers to Contacts.

Tools

This folder contains all kinds of phone settings. Many of them were mentioned above, so here we will only mention the application manager that installs them, and at the same time shows what exactly is installed and how much memory space is occupied.

Games (Games). Three games are initially installed: Snake Ex, Card Deck and Mix Pix. I won’t dwell on them: games are just games.

Impressions

Let's move on to the most interesting part of the review. As far as sound transmission is concerned, the 7650 is a standard phone, comparable, for example, to the Nokia 6310, 8310. The sound in the speaker is clearly audible, the speakerphone function is implemented decently, although it is unlikely to be used in a noisy room. The advantage of the device is the function of displaying the duration of the conversation, the disadvantage is the inability to activate the voice recorder with one touch. Another feature of the voice recorder is that while recording a conversation, every 5 seconds both interlocutors hear a sound signal, which over time begins to be quite annoying. The vibration alert is average: you won’t feel it from the bag. The call of the 7650 is loud, clear, and non-polyphonic.

Now you should evaluate the capabilities of the device as a whole. The advantages include the relatively small size for a device of this class, a built-in camera with acceptable image quality, and a good screen. The disadvantages are a short operating time, the impossibility of installing a more capacious battery, flaws in the bluetooth implementation, as well as the lack of a cable and additional expansion cards. The 4 megabyte memory limit will not allow installing many interesting Symbian programs on the 7650, some of which may be necessary for the user. The software is very ascetic and does not reach the level of an average PDA, although, of course, it provides greater capabilities than any mobile phone. The big drawback of the device is that without an inserted SIM card you cannot use any of its functions; it simply will not turn on. I think that this ambivalence is largely explained by marketing policy: after all, if the 7650 was equipped with an expansion slot for cards, sales of the 9210i would immediately decline. With a fairly noticeable difference in price, the 7650 is a more profitable purchase, because not everyone needs a full keyboard: many enter data on a PC, but use a smartphone only for reading.

The model turned out to be very contradictory: on the one hand, excellent ergonomics and convenient menu organization, on the other, a deliberate limitation of functionality.
