NOKIA 7110

The box of the new Nokia 7110 contains: the phone itself, a 900 mAh lithium-ion battery, a charger with a convenient Velcro for tying unnecessary wires, instructions in Russian and English (2 books) made at a fairly high printing level), a CD with software phone security.

Design

To be honest, it seems to me that the design of the 7110 is noticeably different from all other modern Nokia models. Is it bad? I would not say, the phone is still very well thought out and, despite the rather rather large size, does not give the impression of a really large phone, especially if we take into account the fact that now the small size is considered an undoubted advantage of the phone, as well as the first sign of a prestigious and expensive model ( however, some people who are not at all poor prefer large phones, due to the fact that they lie better in the owner’s large hand).

In this model, Nokia used the retractable cover, which was already used in some of its models, or as it is also called, the slider (from the English Slide - to slide), which, in my purely subjective opinion, has several serious advantages compared to the flip:

  • The slider in the Nokia 7110 has a fairly robust design and moves on metal parts, which makes it much stronger and more reliable than conventional flips. In addition, if a phone with a flip falls, it can easily break off, and the Nokia 7110 slider simply snaps off, and then it is put back into place without any problems (the main thing is to check how securely you have fixed it and, if necessary, reinstall it again! ). Thus, the phone turned out to be quite reliable (the slider snapping was clearly invented on purpose, since even the instructions describe how to put it back in place in case something happens), although in some conferences there are still complaints about the sometimes broken slider eject button. I think it may also depend on the intensity and accuracy of using the phone.
  • In the same Nokia 7110, the slider is opened using a small button on the back of the device and a spring mechanism, so it opens almost instantly and can be done quickly with one hand (however, right-handers will still be much more comfortable than left-handers). The slider is more convenient than a flip when you need to quickly answer a call or your hands are busy.
  • As another plus of this solution, I can't help but note its style and originality, which will surely distinguish the owner of Nokia 7110 from the general crowd!

Of course, the slider is active (opening it answers the call, and closing it ends it) and contains a microphone at the bottom, which, when the slider is pulled back, is right next to your mouth, which is important if you want to be heard by the interlocutor when calling from noisy places.

Another important feature - Nokia 7110 has an external antenna, which is somewhat unusual for a modern Nokia, but does not harm the design of a particular device (especially since the antenna is small) and, at least a little, improves the sensitivity of the device in places with poor reception.

The area around the screen is bordered by an iron edging, on which three control buttons are installed. With their help, you can perform many functions without opening the slider, or simply make/answer a call.

The screen itself deserves a separate discussion, but for now we only note that it is really huge (phones with such large screens can really be counted on the fingers) and allows you to display up to 6 lines of text. The screen is graphic and high-contrast, with excellent backlighting.

As in all modern Nokia phones, the case expands upwards, but in the Nokia 7110 this is especially noticeable, and creates slight disproportions (especially with the slider open).

Unlike some other models (for example, 3210 and 3310), Nokia 7110 does not have interchangeable panels, but its green chameleon body can change shades to brown, depending on the lighting and viewing angle, and generally looks quite stylish and solid (not Remember, Nokia 7110 is still positioned not as a youth, but as a business model).

The characteristics of the appearance of the device in numbers are as follows: 125x53x24 mm and 141 grams of weight with a standard battery.

Finally, I will answer the main question, did I like the design as a whole? To me, in general, yes, but, of course, he will find not only his supporters, but also ardent opponents. Still, this phone is a little big and too austere, it will certainly look great in the hand of the president of the company, but not very suitable in style for a teenager. Although the latter just really like it, since a similar model with a slider was used during the filming of the movie "The Matrix" (most likely it was Nokia 8110), which I was repeatedly told (oddly enough, although I myself watched this movie, but never remembered what kind of phone Neo had).

Installing the SIM card

A SIM card (a microchip with data on the subscriber's number, phone book and other settings) is held on one side by a plastic limiter, and on the other - by a sliding metal plate. This is a fairly reliable design, but still, the SIM card can hang out a little, and, due to shaking, it can move and lose contact with the phone (however, in reality this is quite rare, and it only happened to me when I stored between the phone case and the battery one more additional SIM card, thereby inflating the gaps inside).

Accessories

Users of the 61xx series will certainly be pleased to know that compatibility with most of the accessories for this series has been preserved, which will simplify (primarily financially) the transition to the Nokia 7110, and for beginners, the following accessories are offered:

  • Clips for fastening on a belt.
  • Handsfree devices (usually headphones with a microphone, for talking on the phone with free hands - very convenient for motorists).
  • Cases, but their choice is very small and comes down mainly to bags, from which the phone must be removed for a conversation, due to its clearly anti-case design (slider).
  • Car kits.
  • external antennas.
  • Various chargers.
  • Batteries ranging from 900 to 1500 mAh, both standard lithium-ion, and expensive lithium-polymer and cheap nickel-metal hydride.
  • PC connection cable.

Control keys

We need to dwell on this point, since the Nokia 7110 has a unique feature that has not yet been implemented in any of the other phones - the NaviRoller control wheel (Sony has something similar, but the wheel is located on the side panel of the device, and, at least At least I didn't find it very convenient). As you can see in the figure, the NaviRoller is conveniently located between the two control keys, and you can not only rotate it, but also press it, which is analogous to the wheel in Microsoft IntelliMouse mice. The ideas embedded in the wheel are the same, the wheel selects a menu item, and then by clicking on it, the selection is made. Two keys located on the sides provide additional options for managing the phone. In general, the system is very well thought out and comfortable, perhaps the most convenient of all Nokia phones.

Menu

The menu of the latest Nokia devices usually evokes quite positive emotions among users of phones from this company, and many even notice that after Nokia they cannot get used to other phones. Of course, everyone can have their own tastes regarding the menu (many people, like me, really like Motorola's quick access menu), so here is a small description of the structure and basic principles of the menu in modern Nokia devices (using the reviewed Nokia 7110 model as an example). ).

So, Nokia prefers to keep a minimum of items in the settings submenu. According to Nokia engineers, it is much better to store the settings of each function of the phone in the submenu of this very function (for example, the settings for the SMS short message service are stored directly in the submenu for working with SMS messages). The advantage of this approach is that you can quickly change the desired setting, as they say, "on the spot" when you work with some function; the disadvantage is that the settings are scattered throughout the menu, and sometimes they can be difficult to find. In addition, a very useful feature of Nokia phones is that the settings for SMS and WAP (Wireless World Wide Web Access Protocol), as well as some other services, are stored in so-called sets (settings) or profiles, of which there may be several. Thus, different settings can be stored for different operators at the same time, be it different numbers of SMS centers or completely different WAP settings. Switching between sets of settings takes only a few seconds, which can be very useful when roaming or if you often change cards of different operators.

Menu navigation, as mentioned earlier, is carried out using the NaviRoller tool and two side control keys. In most cases, the right key takes you back a level or exits a menu/submenu, and clicking on the NaviRoller tool brings up the options for the function or its submenu. Pressing the left key usually activates the function. When working with the menu, it is important to remember that pressing the left key on some menu item usually calls up the main sub-item of this menu, and clicking on the NaviRoller tool displays the sub-menu itself (in the Modes menu, however, everything is done the other way around).

For example, the picture shows that if you click on the NaviRoller tool on the Messages menu item, you get to the submenu with a list of folders, and by pressing the left key, you get to the editor window where you can write a new message. Already in this submenu, the NaviRoller tool will enter inside the folders, and the left key will display a list of options for each folder.

To make it easier to understand which key and when to press, remember a simple rule: pressing the left control key always displays possible actions with this menu item (options) or simply performs some action (in this case, the name of the action is written above the key, as seen on picture), and clicking on the NaviRoller tool always either enters the submenu of this menu item, or clicking on it is equivalent to pressing the left control key (if there is no longer any submenu).

Not to say that such a menu system is absolutely perfect, but it allows you to hide a bunch of options in various submenus in a relatively small number of menu items and group them precisely according to their belonging to a particular function.

How convenient is it? Well, in some ways I like the menu in Motorola more, in some ways in Nokia. At the same time, the opinion of most reviewers and users about the superiority of the Nokia menu over all others is most likely based not on the fact that it is much more convenient, but on the fact that it really has more various functions and settings. But this is already the merit of the phone and its large number of features in general, and not how these features are organized in the menu.

Externally, the menu in Nokia, as you can see in the pictures, looks pretty nice, with a description of the action of the function keys and large graphic icons. Each item and sub-item of the menu has its own number, displayed in the upper right part of the screen, and with their help you can also navigate through the menu, and moreover, quite quickly. For example, pressing the Right Key > 6 > 1 will launch Snake II.

Finally, if you stop at any menu item or sub-item and wait a few seconds, the machine will display a brief description of that function.

Phone book

What exactly distinguishes Nokia 7110 from any other phone, what exactly this device remains the leader even now - in the phone book! Even the newer model Nokia 6210, which has absorbed many advantages of the Nokia 7110 (although the screen and dimensions will be smaller), as well as with a more classic Nokia design and voice dialing (well, at a higher price, of course) - has half the phone book.

So, Nokia 7110 allows you to store up to 1000 contacts in memory, for each of which you can have up to 5 phones and 2 text fields. In fact, 5 phone numbers and 2 lines of text can be recorded not for all 1000 contacts, but it is unlikely that many will need it. Each number or text can be accompanied by an icon indicating its type: general, mobile, home, work, fax, e-mail address, postal address, note.

It is also possible to copy the phone book to and from the SIM card, (of course, you need to take into account the size of the SIM card and the maximum length of names in it, only the main number will be copied).

Recordings can be saved in Russian, but, firstly, when trying to copy them to a SIM card, we will get a solid mess of unreadable characters, and secondly, typing in Russian letters is very inconvenient at first, since only English letters are signed on the keys letters, and at first you have to just guess the Russian ones (then, in principle, you can learn them). By the way, when the Russian menu is on, you can enter the contact name in both Russian and English (typing English when the Russian menu is on is inconvenient because of the need for a long search of options on the keys, and NaviRoller will generally offer only Russian letters), which cannot be done with English menu included. However, all entries entered in Russian will be perfectly visible after switching to the English menu, but you won’t be able to use the search by the first letter for them (again, Russian letters are not entered)

When calling from the phone book, you need to select a contact and press the call button to call the main number, or click on the NaviRoller tool and get to the submenu with a list of all contact numbers if you need to call another.

Another very nice feature is the ability to combine contacts into groups, after which each group can be assigned its own call, and as we will see later in this review, you can also choose a mode when subscribers from one group can call you, but from another cannot .

Of course, the Nokia 7110 also has a speed dial for 8 numbers, by long pressing a number key, and the function of transferring contacts to other compatible phones via infrared and SMS (meaning Nokia phones), but you should remember that if the phone is not has such a functional phone book, only the main phone number of the contact will be transferred to it. Using the same infrared port, contacts can be printed on a compatible printer.

Nokia 7110 as an organizer

So, as I wrote at the very beginning of the article, Nokia 7110 was previously positioned as something in between ordinary mobile phones and the Nokia Communicator series. Of course, such a phone could not remain without organizer functions, and they are present in it, and, by the way, considerable ones!

The organizer itself is a calendar that can be viewed by months, weeks and days. By selecting a specific day, you can create different types of notes: meeting, call, birthday, reminder. By the way, when entering a birthday, the phone itself will calculate the age of the hero of the day, which can also be very useful.

In total, the phone can store more than 600 notes.

Working with SMS

The SMS short message service has recently become an extremely popular and convenient means of communication, not only for those who find it expensive to make a regular call, but simply as a convenient replacement for a pager, this is the ability to communicate during a meeting, and in other places where talking on a mobile phone not accepted. Not surprisingly, manufacturers are doing their best to solve perhaps the main problem of SMS - the unsuitability of mobile phone keyboards for fast typing. Ericsson uses a small keyboard that connects to the phone (Ericsson Chatboard) for this, but it still needs to be carried around and, in addition, the keys on it are quite tiny. And most importantly - this thing is nothing more than an attempt to solve the problem in an extensive way, this is an excellent solution in some cases, but do not forget about the possibilities of more convenient text entry on the native keyboard of the phone itself, especially since with the T9 system it turns out very quickly , sometimes even faster than with an Ericsson keyboard.

The T9 system itself works quite simply, and if you don't already know how, then here is a brief summary of the basic principle of its operation. Let's say we enter the word nice (good) in the usual way: press key 6 (2 times), key 4 (3 times), key 2 again (3 times), key 3 (2 times). As you can see, each key is pressed more than once, which significantly slows down typing. In the T9 system, everything is simple: we press sequentially and one time: 6, 4, 2, 3. That's it! Without T9, we introduce only the first variants of the letters: mgad. Doesn't look nice, does it? But, using only these keys and pressing each of them 2 times, you can enter, for example: nhbe. Also not the same, although closer. In reality, there are many combinations, but their number is limited, and the main number of options is meaningless character sets like nhbe or mgad. If the phone can look into the dictionary, it is possible that it will find only two or three, or even one word that matches this combination. Thus, you only need to enter a word by pressing each letter once, and then select one of the suggested word options, if there are several. It is very convenient and fast, but ... one thing - no one has released a Russian dictionary yet. Thus, the T9 system is not yet available to Russian users.

In general, entering text in Russian has other disadvantages: the already described problems with the lack of Russian inscriptions on the keys, and secondly, very few mobile phones can read such a message. Another problem is that if you receive a Russian message on the Nokia 7110 and send it to someone else, it will go through fine, but if you just write it and send it, it will go out in the wrong encoding. Because of this, I do not recommend using Russian when sending SMS, but there are two problems here. Firstly, when iterating through characters, you can’t get to English until you sort through all the Russian ones on a given key. The problem is that you cannot turn off Russian characters without turning off the Russian menu at all. In my opinion, this is a very big mistake of Nokia engineers, it would be worth making the Russification of the menu and typing separate. Secondly, if you still enable the English menu, you still cannot use transliteration and English text with the T9 system at the same time. The fact is that when typing Russian words in English letters, the included T9 system will select English words for the typed word, i.e. completely distort the text. Unfortunately, you will simply have to choose between the included T9 system and the set in English only or the set only in transliteration, but without T9. However, the T9 system can be quickly turned on and off. It's even better if you and all your friends know the language of Shakespeare.

In general, work with SMS in Nokia 7110 is organized like a mail client, because all sent messages are stored in the Sending folder, and the received ones are first displayed above the folders, and after reading they go to the Receive folder. These folders gradually fill up, and when they are full, they can be cleared manually, or simply left to the phone, which will automatically delete the oldest messages, making room for new ones. By the way, in order not to lose important messages in this way, they need to be moved to the Archive folder specially designed for this. Finally, there is also the Templates folder, which contains standard response templates that you can use in your messages. However, all the templates in the new phone will be in English, so they will need to be edited and rewritten, for example, in transliteration.

As mentioned earlier, you can have several settings for messages, and in each you can specify your own settings: SMS center number, message format, maximum message delivery time, default recipient number (if you often send messages to one number). There are also general settings, such as requesting a delivery report and replying via the sender's SMS center.

As you can see, working with SMS in Nokia 7110 is implemented very conveniently, if not for the problems with Russian and related ones.

By the way, some of these problems are solved in Nokia 3310, which allows you to select the Russian text encoding when sending. Perhaps, in new firmware for Nokia 7110 this feature will also be implemented. Let's hope.

The most popular WAP phone

The Nokia 7110 was the first Nokia phone and generally one of the first, if not the first phone to support the WAP protocol. Despite the fact that it was the first pancake, it did not become a lump for Nokia. WAP support is really implemented very high quality and competently, and most importantly, the phone was the first, it became like a standard WAP phone, which means that all the creators of WAP pages, one way or another, ensured the compatibility of their creations with this phone in the first place. Only now other phones with WAP support from various manufacturers have started to appear at an affordable price, many of them display pages better than the Nokia 7110, but still this phone is still the standard, and for many the word WAP is associated with it.

And yet, the phone does not support some formatting elements, and, of course, has its own errors, but most of them can be avoided using the latest firmware version. And besides, if you have to choose between something newer (with better page formatting support) and Nokia 7110 (with its huge screen) - I would choose the latter!

What else distinguishes this phone from many competitors, especially from cheap phones like Motorola Talkabout 2288, is a lot of useful features that help a lot not only in working with the network, but also simply save connection time, and therefore money.

By the way, about the Motorola Talkabout 2288. This, in general, an excellent phone, in my opinion, is indescribably spoiled by a terrible WAP browser, which greatly shook the image of Motorola in my eyes - they do not always do convenient, but always working things, but to call WAP in the early models t2288 working - somehow even the tongue does not turn.

But, back to the WAP implementation in Nokia 7110. So, it supports:

  • WAP version 1.1 support
  • Ability to have up to 5 sets of settings, for different operators
  • The presence of bookmarks where you can write down frequently visited addresses
  • The jump line to the address, which, surprisingly, is not available in all phones from other manufacturers
  • The function of clearing the cache, which can be very useful if the page is refreshed
  • Support for security certificates
  • The function of using the number written in the text of the page, for example, to add it to the phone book
  • Ability to disable graphics loading if the connection is very slow
  • Finally, the command to disconnect the WAP session - imagine, for some phones (the same Motorola Talkabout 2288 with an old browser), even this is done exclusively by turning off the phone (in this phone, to exit the WAP session, go to the home page and press the cancel key a couple of times - for some reason it works depending on the weather or maybe even on the code of the operator's home page).

So if you are going to actively use WAP, the Nokia 7110 phone, thanks to its large and convenient screen, is still perhaps the best choice.

How does he call?

Nokia phones are famous for a large number of different melodies and other trinkets designed to make life as easy as possible for a phone user. In the new models, and hence in Nokia 7110, work with call profiles is organized, which can be selected depending on the place or situation.

By pressing the off button (short press), you get to the menu from which you can not only turn off the phone, but also select or configure the profile of calls and other sounds coming from the phone (the same is available in the Modes menu). A total of 5 profiles are available, 4 of which can be renamed. For each profile, the corresponding configuration is configured: ring type (single, increasing, etc.), ring tone (35 available and 5 pieces can be downloaded additionally), ring power, ring type when an SMS message arrives, key sound, sound games, vibrating. You can set up a profile so that calls will only be received from the relevant selected groups.

Thus, Nokia 7110 offers very convenient, and generally traditional for all modern Nokia phones, phone control tools depending on the situation. It is enough to select the desired profile by pressing three keys, and you will turn off calls, or change the melody, or turn on the vibrating alert - and all this in a complex, according to predetermined settings!

But the volume will have to respond badly, or rather very badly! I don’t know about other devices, but the one that fell into my hands sounded too quiet, it was impossible to hear in the next room. In general, you can normally work only with the maximum volume of the call, the rest are suitable only in those places where you can not make noise. To be honest, this is somewhat disappointing: it's so great to implement call control and give a huge selection of melodies for them, but the most elementary and necessary let us down. However, this does not mean that you will definitely miss a call on the street or in another noisy place - fortunately, the vibrating alert in Nokia 7110 is implemented quite well.

Any other perks

Any modern Nokia reminds me a little of the famous Swiss multifunctional knives: the engineers of this company, in pursuit of technical excellence, never forget about small pleasant things that, in general, are not an integral part of the phone, but still may be useful to its owner . In this model, there are: a calendar, a calculator, an alarm clock and, of course, games.

So, the calculator in this model is the most common, with a minimum of functions, but with a currency converter. Of course, it is not intended for serious calculations, but after all, in the office or at home, we usually have a real calculator or even a computer at hand, but on the street, most often you need to calculate some trifle, with which the calculator from Nokia 7110 is necessary cope.

Also in this model there are 4 games, on which there is no point in dwelling in detail. I will only note that they are well made, and a large screen suits them just in time. And there are such games: Snake II (snake), Rotation (placement of numbers in order in a square), Racket (racquet) and Opposite (reversi). The backlight during games can be turned off in the settings, which will help save battery power significantly.

Finally, the phone is equipped with an infrared port and a built-in full-featured modem, which means that they can also be used for all kinds of entertainment and decorations. Using the IR port and modem, as well as connecting the phone to a PC using a cable, you can upload various pictures (operator or group logos) and melodies to it, and you can also play games together using the IR port.

Sensitivity and call quality

In general, many believe that Motorola produces the best phones in terms of sensitivity, while Nokia is still behind in this matter. I will not argue with this statement, it is partly correct - Nokia really lags behind Motorola in this matter, but! Almost everyone is lagging behind, and in the market of GSM devices, the first places belong to Nokia, and therefore you can be sure that if the operator decides to provide the region with communication, he will still ensure the normal operation of all modern phones in this area, especially when it comes to devices produced by the market leader in mobile communications.

So, speaking of phones in general, and Nokia products in particular, we must not forget that the first thing that determines the good communication quality of this phone is the operator itself, or rather, the quality of its network. Now most operators build their network quite competently and try to avoid large holes in the coverage, so it became possible to use even antennaless phones, although it is not a fact that they are really seriously inferior to their traditional counterparts.

Now about the Nokia 7110. The phone shows excellent sensitivity when tested in the city (by the way, not in the capital, but in the provinces) and works well everywhere, except for some places where almost all phones "stall" (iron elevators, basements, places network failures). Besides, we shouldn't forget that the old dispute about the reception quality of antennaless phones has nothing to do with this model - Nokia 7110 has a normal external antenna on board. Well, for those who want to constantly know the quality of communication at the moment - the scale of communication quality with the base station includes as many as 7 divisions!

To top it off, I want to add that the sound quality is good and quite natural, and when the slider is open, the microphone located on it is just opposite your mouth, so your voice will be clearly heard by the interlocutor, even if you are calling from a noisy place.

Battery

The Nokia 7110 comes standard with a B2S-2S lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 900 mAh and a voltage of 3.6 volts. The battery supports the phone up to 260 hours of standby time and up to 4,5 hours of talk time. At the same time, a large screen, and at the same time its backlight, is very expensive for the phone. Therefore, if you actively climb the menu or play toys, the battery can last no more than 1-2 days. In addition, access to WAP eats up a lot of energy, and this is one of the main features of the phone. So, large volumes of the battery should be treated philosophically - it all depends on how fully the functionality of the device is used.

There are also nickel-metal hydride and lithium-polymer batteries compatible with this model. When buying a Nokia 7110, be sure to ask about the type of battery that comes with it: if the price is suspiciously low, it may well be nickel-metal hydride, which is hardly worth buying for such an expensive and energy-demanding model.

Synchronization and other communication options

As mentioned earlier, Nokia 7110 has a built-in modem and infrared port, which allows you to connect your phone to a computer. On the CD included in the package, you can find all the necessary software: a modem driver for various versions of Windows (including Windows CE) and programs for synchronization with personal information managers such as Microsoft Outlook. Also, with the help of additional software, you can download additional logos and melodies to your phone.

Firmware and possible problems associated with them

The complication of phones makes them more and more like computers, and therefore it is not surprising that, in addition to their traditional advantages, mobile phones are slowly starting to sort out the typical problems of their older counterparts. A rather big problem in the old Nokia 7110 was the firmware (software embedded in the phone), which caused a lot of glitches and freezes. New firmware for this device contains significant improvements compared to earlier versions: most of the errors that caused incorrect operation or freezing of the phone have been fixed, menu display and device operation in general have been significantly accelerated, power consumption has been slightly reduced, some functions have been redesigned for greater user convenience, new features have been added .

From all this it follows that there is no point in using a phone with old firmware when there are much better new ones. It is believed that relatively problem-free firmware starts with version 4.84, and at the moment versions starting with the number 5 are already available.

Replacing the old firmware version with a new one should be done on special Nokia equipment, and only this way of flashing will keep the warranty on the device and save the owner from other possible problems. It will also save all settings and entries in your phone's phonebook. Of course, local craftsmen are often much more talented than local Nokia engineers, but they do not have the necessary equipment and access to all Nokia tools, firmware and technical documentation. You can only contact them at your own risk.

Conclusions and recommendations

The Nokia 7110 is a great and still very modern handset with a wide range of features. Its main shortcomings: a weak call and a disgusting implementation of typing SMS messages (most devices do not accept Russian, and it is convenient to enter English only with the English menu turned on). The standard battery in Nokia 7110 is capacious enough to provide more than one hour of talk time or WAP work. The reception quality is excellent, perhaps not least thanks to the external antenna. The design of the device is very original and focused on business people, but young people will also like it. The average phone price at the moment ranges from $240-$300, depending on the region and place of purchase. If we compare the Nokia 7110 with other devices of the same price range, it certainly looks up to the mark compared to them and justifies its price.

This phone will undoubtedly appeal to lovers of all sorts of advanced features, as well as to everyone who needs a large phone book, organizer, high-quality WAP protocol and a large screen, as well as just to all Nokia lovers who want to buy something in this price range. Those who like to communicate via SMS, who do not know English, may have certain problems with the device (as it has already been said many times before, normal transmission of SMS messages to older phones can be achieved only with the English menu turned on).

Quantum teleportation 44 km 06.01.2021

Scientists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory - the US Department of Energy's national laboratory affiliated with the University of Chicago - along with partners from five institutions, have taken a significant step towards realizing the quantum Internet.

The researchers were able to transmit a quantum state over 44 km with over 90% accuracy over fiber optic networks similar to those that form the backbone of the current internet.

"We are delighted with these results. This is a key advance towards creating a technology that will redefine the development of global communication," says physicist Panagiotis Spentsouris of the Fermilab Laboratory of Particle Physics and Accelerators, based at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Both data transmission accuracy and transmission distance are critical when it comes to building a real, working quantum internet. Making progress on any of these fronts is cause for celebration.
