NOKIA 5210. Mobile phone review
Review
The 5210 comes standard in a Burned Orange case. Cases are available in 4 more colors as additional accessories (Thirsty Blue, Wave Blue, Flushed Yellow, Weathered Green), which, in my opinion, look more attractive than the standard one. Perhaps the company is trying to stimulate sales of interchangeable cases in this way?! The dimensions of the phone are small - 105.5 x 47.5 x 22.5 mm and weighs 92 grams. Around the screen you see a silver insert, the same for all color options. The screen itself is notable for the fact that it was the first to use a soft amber backlight (pastel orange). To be honest, the intensity of the backlight is high, and the color saturation is minimal, so it's hard to say that it is amber. The display accommodates up to 3 lines of text of 16 characters each, a line of icons and labels for soft keys. Information on the screen is easy to read in various lighting conditions. Under the display there are three paired keys - navigation in the middle, end call and send call keys, combined with soft keys, on the sides. The silver-colored paired keys are made of plastic, while the number keys are black and made of rubber. The keyboard is comfortable to use: the keys are large enough to make excessive efforts to press them is not required. Some difficulties arise when working with a scroll key that has a recess in the middle. On the left side surface there are volume keys squeezed into the case, there were no problems when using them. At the bottom is the IrDA window. At the top end of the phone, you can see the on/off key, it is also formed from the case. At the bottom there are two connectors covered with a rubber plug: one for connecting a telephone headset, the other for a charger. On each of the four corners of the device there are fastenings for a strap. Now a few words about interchangeable Xpress-on™ shells, in contrast to the already familiar Xpress-on™ panels that include a keyboard. These cases are removed quickly enough - just press on the two protrusions on the sides of the phone and pull the upper part (the lower part is also freed). You can also open the case on a working device - if you are careful, nothing will happen. The phone platform is fixed in the case due to side springs, which you press with your hands when opening. Thus, it will not be possible to snap the case without filling inside: it will simply fall apart into two parts. Of course, this design does not ensure the tightness of the case, so dropping the device into water is not recommended: it, like any other phone, will instantly get wet, despite the membranes installed, for example, in the speaker holes. The lower part of the case has a hole for plugs, so the rubber plug does not adjoin the surface very tightly here. If the lower part of the case is lowered into a glass of water (without a phone, of course), then moisture will almost immediately penetrate inside. So I advise you to follow the instructions for using the device and do not try to swim with it. The waterproof case will protect the phone from raindrops, dust and, to some extent, from falling from a small height (due to the soft design and non-rigid fastening of the platform inside). Having examined the lower part of the case, you will see protrusions extending from the keys, with the help of which pressing is transmitted to the phone platform. The same principle applies to the on/off key and side volume keys. The Nokia 5210 has a 750 mAh lithium-ion battery (BLB-2). According to the manufacturer, the phone can work from 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes in talk mode and from 60 to 170 hours in standby mode. Full charge time with ACP-8/ device is 2 h.10 min., with ACP - 7/3 h. minute in one case and 4 minutes in the other case). The time to fully charge the battery is about 3 hours. In standby mode, the battery level indicator on the screen has 4 bars. Menu The organization of the 5210 menu is typical for all Nokia phones. The main menu consists of 10 main items, each of which is numbered, as well as sub-items, which makes it possible to use speed dialing using number sequences. Consider the main features of the phone. Phone book The phone book in this model is traditional. Capacity - 250 names (20 characters for a name and 30 for a number), SIM card memory is available; One number is assigned to one name. 10 numbers can be assigned voice tags; recognition works well, but the device does not track the same marks. The Nokia 5210 supports dial plans, each of which can be assigned an individual ring tone. A phone book search is provided, in general, everything is quite ordinary. It is worth mentioning that the device with software version 5.02 does not support Russian-language input - instead of Cyrillic characters, question marks appear, in version 5.14 this problem has already been solved. Localization of the menu is done, as usual, well. Messages Unlike other Nokia phones, this model has its own zest, namely, icon sets that can be used in short messages. In total, the phone has several sets of such icons preinstalled (6 groups of 8 pictures each) in addition to 9 standard picture messages (there is 1 slot for a new message). In addition, it is possible to replace any existing picture with another received one. A separate item is dedicated to "smiles": 5 preset emoticons and 3 empty slots. Any emoticon can be overwritten. There are 8 editable text templates (6 in English) and two empty slots. The phone supports connected messages (up to three), there is an SMS-chat function. As you can see, the phone is really focused on the youth audience: icons, emoticons and other functions of the Messages menu are addressed to it. Calls This item provides access to the lists of the last 20 dialed, 10 missed or 10 received calls with the date and time of the call. In the same menu, you can view the total time of all calls or the duration of only outgoing (only incoming) calls. Modes Standard menu with user profile settings, but there is one interesting detail: only 4 profiles are pre-installed (although usually all are pre-installed), two more slots are empty. Any profile is configured in accordance with your tastes and requests, there is a function to temporarily enable the selected profile. Special mention should be made of the Mode symbol function, which allows you to select a screensaver for a given profile, which will be displayed in standby mode after a set time (5 or 20 seconds; 1,2,5,10 minutes). Setting This item contains various settings, an alarm clock. Of the interesting innovations, it is worth noting the function of automatic keyboard lock, which first appeared in this model. You can set the time (in the range from 10 seconds to 60 minutes), after which the keypad will be automatically locked, as well as enter a personal code, in the absence of which the phone will not allow the keypad to be unlocked. When locked, the machine emits a tone. There is reason to believe that this type of blocking will become standard for all Nokia devices. There are 35 pre-installed tones and ringtones in the device, besides, you can create up to 7 own melodies using the built-in synthesizer. The light signal is configured in such a way that when a call comes in, the screen winks rhythmically in time with the call. The vibrating alert will do the same - it all looks quite nice. Games The phone has 4 games: Snake II, Space Impact, Bumper, Bantumi. The first three games are well known to owners of Nokia phones, which cannot be said about Bantumi, which is a logic game, and not very exciting. Naturally, there is an opportunity to play games-services. Calculator Everything is still simple and not very convenient. The calendar The calendar memory allows you to enter up to 100 events, including recurring ones; set up alerts for them. Viewing the calendar is organized only by weeks, a quick transition to the date is provided. The youth status of the phone is emphasized by the Workout item that appears in the Create note menu, with the ability to select the type of workout from a list of various sports, such as Cycling, Budo, Dancing, Extreme, etc. There is a lunar calendar, which cannot be viewed, since it only works when the Chinese language is set in the menu, which the phone will notify you about. IR Enable/disable the infrared port. Extra Various functions are collected here, some of them are quite interesting. So, in addition to a simple countdown timer, the phone has a timer that measures time by specified intervals, or simply an interval timer. There is a stopwatch that remembers up to 20 intermediate or relative results and saves them as a list or transfers them to a calendar. Brand new is the Thermometer function. The phone displays the current ambient temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius. As stated in the instructions, this function is not intended for professional use, and this is true. The measurement error compared to a mercury thermometer is quite large, the data recording time takes about 5 minutes, the error is several degrees. The influence of the body, which nevertheless has a certain heat capacity, affects. Finally, the last thing that deserves our attention is a graphic editor that allows you to change standard graphic templates or create new ones. The features provided by the editor are not great, but they are enough for something. Services This item opens access to wap-browser version 1.2.1. There were no problems with its setup or use. Impressions The loudspeaker volume in Nokia 5210 is excessive, it has to be turned down to about half. Noises are heard in the speaker that do not disappear when the backlight is turned off during a call. Similar problems were observed in several devices of this model, so they should be attributed to design flaws, and not attributed to the behavior of individual samples. During a conversation, the noises are practically inaudible, as they are clogged with speech. Moreover, you quickly get used to them and stop noticing them, but, nevertheless, they are present. The sound quality is above average, but metallic notes are audible. The phone obviously loses to other devices from Nokia in this parameter, but it is quite comparable with many models from other manufacturers presented on the market. The vibrating alert is well felt from the holster, worse - from the pockets of outerwear, in general, this phone cannot boast of an extremely strong vibrating alert. The situation is saved by a loud bell, but in noisy rooms it can still not be heard. In principle, the ringing strength of the 5210 model is comparable to the Nokia 6510, while both devices have a maximum volume of 70 percent of the volume of the Nokia 6210. There were no problems with the sensitivity of the phone in urban conditions, the device performed well, approximately the same as the Nokia 3310/3330. Functionally, the phone is quite interesting, especially since it is intended primarily for young people. The bad news is that the device comes standard in a rather boring orange case (the additional color options look more attractive). There are features that will appeal to young users who play sports from time to time, such as functions for measuring run time or training time. This device was created for amateurs who are not so important for the accuracy of measurements, including ambient temperature. Nokia 5210 is a successful model aimed at the youth audience. The device has all the makings to become popular among young users: it can withstand falls from a small height, is not afraid of rain, has ample opportunities for communication via short messages and even an infrared port, which can be useful for sending your business card to another phone. The 5210 does not have a large phone book with the ability to store multiple numbers under one name, voice recorder, support for packet data (GPRS) and some other features. But they, in principle, are not needed for a phone of this class. The device turned out to be perfectly balanced for its audience, but for older users, it will almost certainly not appeal to either its design or capabilities.
