NOKIA 3310

Externally, Nokia 3310 almost does not differ from its younger brother 3210. The same semi-circular shape, again there is no external antenna, almost the same dimensions - 113x48x22 mm (Nokia 3210 - 124x51x23 mm), the same set of buttons. Also at an angle there was a button - "swing" scrolling the menu. To some, this seems functional, but personally I would be more satisfied if it were, as usual, in the middle.

However, small changes in the design of the model still appeared. So, the panel around the screen became the color of the case, only the edging remained light, the buttons got a rough silver coating, and their shape became more convenient - drop-shaped. The functionality of the button located on the top of the phone has been greatly improved, with which you can now not only turn the phone on / off, but also change profile modes. Of all the buttons on the phone, it is the only rubber one, all the rest are plastic.

The body color has also changed. Now, instead of one standard gray, Nokia3310 is available in five more colors (red, yellow, blue, silver and almost white). Of course, there remains the possibility of replacing panels, both rear and front, which allows the owner of the phone to emphasize his own style and personality. There are a variety of colors, and not necessarily monophonic, which cannot but rejoice. Although changing the panels is still quite a laborious task. To be honest, despite all my countless efforts, I never managed to open the back panel to change the SIM card. It would seem that everything is simple, press the button on the back and slide the panel, but it did not give in ... I had to apply "brute male force", which, oddly enough, did not cope on the first try either. The front panel turned out to be even worse. Maybe I just got a tight copy? Or maybe, in fact, not a very thoughtful design. In short, the idea of changing panels to match the color of nail polish had to be postponed until "better" times, until the developers come up with something simpler that would require less effort and time. Thank God that at least the battery often does not need to be pulled out!

The disadvantages can also be attributed to the still sufficient severity of the model. If the Nokia 3210 weighed 151g, then the 3310 weighs 133g. with standard Ni-MH battery. With an additional lithium-ion battery, the weight of the phone is reduced to 107g. and becomes quite acceptable. In this configuration, this model is just perfect for women.

Additional Delivery Components

In addition to the phone, the package also includes instructions, a battery, and a charger. All this is neatly placed in a box with a very bright and cheerful photo.

The user manual for the phone is supplied in one booklet in two languages - Russian and English. Although it is beautifully made, printed on glossy paper, and has a convenient format, the instructions for use contained in it are not always clear. Some functions are only mentioned in passing and in the abstract. I would like more specific clear and clearly stated information.

The battery, as already mentioned, unfortunately, is nickel-metal hydride, although powerful - 1250 mAh. Without charging, it was possible to go about three to four days with intensive use (the phone did not turn off at night). According to the documentation in the talk mode, the device can work 2 hours 30 minutes - 4 hours. 30 min., and in standby mode 55h-260h. The disadvantage is that it takes quite a long time to charge the phone, about 3,5-4 hours.

With a lithium-ion battery (850 mAh), the talk time is almost the same, a little less - 2 hours 20 minutes. - 4h.15min., and in standby mode - 55h.-245h. But it does not have the effect of "memory" and significantly reduces the weight of the phone.

Display

After turning on the phone, a welcome inscription appears on the display, which is easy to edit. And, best of all, you can write it in Russian letters.

Further, after registering on the network, the name of the mobile operator is displayed in the middle, at the top - the clock, on the right - the battery charge indicator (5 divisions), and on the left - the level of the radio signal of the network (5 divisions). That is, everything is the same as usual with Nokia devices. I don’t know about you, but I personally like the system for showing the level of the network and battery signal with more compact icons, in the corners, like, for example, Siemens, Motorola and many other companies. But there's nothing you can do about it, you have to put up with it ...

The profile name may also appear on the screen if "Normal", which is the default, is not set, the cellular index (for example, in Moscow "Stolitca") and some icons, depending on the activation of a particular function (for example, silent mode, new message, alarm clock, stopwatch, etc.).

It is also possible to set up the display of funny pictures instead of the operator's logo and use them as a kind of screen savers. There are 13 of them in total, but you can record new ones via SMS messages. The time after which the splash screen is displayed varies from 5 seconds to 10 minutes. It all depends on your desire!

The display is large enough - high-contrast full-graphic. Its resolution is 48 x 84 pixels, it can contain up to 5 lines of text. There is a dynamic font change.

Green backlight. Information is clearly visible at any time of the day. The numbers and letters themselves glow on the keys. Therefore, in the dark it is not difficult to dial a number and write an SMS message.

Menu

The menu organization system of this phone model is the same as in other Nokia devices - very simple and convenient. The menu is controlled with almost one button, to speed up the work there is a hierarchy of menu items and sub-items, i.e. by pressing "Menu", and then a certain combination of numbers, you can quickly get to the required sub-item. The main menu items, of which there are 13, are accompanied by small animated screensavers, which looks very nice.

There is also a temporary menu, which is opened by pressing the "C" key, and is only available during a call. It has functions such as turn on / off the microphone, open the phone book, enter a new number, switch between lines, send a DTMF signal, hang up, etc.

The language in which the menu will be displayed can be selected from seven possible ones (English, French, German, Russian, etc.). Naturally, I chose Russian.

Russification pleasantly surprised me. It was made to a very high standard. The only thing that confused me at first was the words "Calls" and "Signals". For some reason, I really wanted to change the ringtone in the "Calls" menu, but it turned out that this is the item in which the lists of accepted and missed calls and conversation timers are located. And the call itself changed in the "Signals" menu.

All the inscriptions are made in a beautiful and clear font, the letters, as expected, are divided into uppercase and lowercase, which is not often seen.

Melodies

The question of how your phone rings should be approached very seriously, as this is what will help you distinguish your phone from many. Nokia 3310 gives you all the possibilities for this. Here you can set one of 35 factory melodies. I liked the "The Buffoon" horn type. But, if among these melodies, there is not one worthy of you, then you can program 7 more of your own using a synthesizer of melodies.

The signal type for SMS messages can also be changed. But you can only choose from four offered. I really didn't like any of them.

The ringer volume can be set to five levels. I set it to the maximum, but often did not hear the call in places with increased noise (shop, cafe). It should be noted that audibility strongly depended on the chosen melody. You can also adjust the volume of the keyboard tone here (3 levels).

Variants of sound signals also change. There is a regular, increasing (from quiet to loud), single and short. And the latter I would call "single". Usually this is the first sound from a given melody, in this case it is practically impossible to recognize the melody itself. With a single beep, the melody is longer, it is played once and does not repeat again.

The big difference between Nokia 3210 and Nokia 3310 was the appearance of a vibrating alert. However, it feels bad. In the pocket of a medium-thick jacket, it is no longer felt at all.

You can set certain modes or profiles in your phone, which have their own settings configurations. By double-tapping, you can select the desired mode and immediately change the types of signals, their volume, enable or disable the vibrating alert, and select the screen saver. The choice of the mode is carried out in two ways, either using the key on the top panel of the phone, or in the "Modes" menu item. Interestingly, changing the profile settings can only be done in the "Modes" menu section. In total, 6 profiles can be set, and 4 of them are factory preset ("Normal", "Silent", "Short", "Loud").

Phone book

The memory of the Nokia 3310 phone book, unlike many other models, is limited only by the memory of the SIM card, the phone does not have its own memory. However, in most cases, this number of numbers is enough and is no longer required. You can get into the phone book either through the menu, or by pressing the bottom arrow of the scroll key. However, in the second case, the entries cannot be edited.

It is curious that this device allows you to save the names of subscribers written in Russian letters. The question of whether this model is plus or minus is very controversial. On the one hand, it is certainly convenient when the names have a familiar look. But on the other hand, it is a very inconvenient system for typing Russian characters, since they have to be typed at random. After all, the buttons have inscriptions only in Latin letters. Automatically becomes inconvenient and the search system for a particular number. If you abandon the Cyrillic alphabet, it is also inconvenient. The fact is that when typing, it is Russian characters that go first, and then the Latin alphabet. Therefore, you have to do a lot of unnecessary actions, both when typing and when searching. Another disadvantage is that when you change the device to another one that does not support the Russian language in this form, these inscriptions will turn into something that is not clear. A very rich field for fantasies opens up!

This model has the option of setting personal calls to subscribers from the phone book. When "Caller ID" is enabled, you will be able to identify the caller without taking out the phone yet. The main thing is not to confuse the melodies!

Another serious "bells and whistles" of the phone is voice dialing. Up to 8 numbers can be dialed in this way. The work of this function is not always ideal (in noisy places recognition may not occur), but it is quite decent. It is very convenient to use it in winter, when by pressing just one key (long holding the "Menu" button) you can call the desired number.

Up to 8 phone numbers are available for speed dialing. Moreover, when you press the "number" + "Menu" combination, the phone starts calling the number that you assigned to this digit, and when you press the "number" + "#" combination, the call will be made to the number that is in the memory cell corresponding to this digit.

Lists of incoming and outgoing calls are in the "Calls" menu. Moreover, incoming calls to Nokia 3310 are divided into two different groups. Separately, there is a list (up to 10 numbers) with accepted calls, separately - with not accepted ones (up to 10 numbers). The list of outgoing calls can contain up to 20 last dialed numbers.

Working with SMS messages

In this phone model, work with SMS-messages is very diverse.

Firstly, messages can be sent in Russian. However, with typing, again, the same problem arises as when typing names in the phone book. It should also be noted that many users, when transmitting Russian messages, have a lot of problems, such as an unreadable text format on the recipient's phone, the inability to later send messages written in Latin from their own phone, etc. True, this account has passed for me, but perhaps I until just lucky. When such problems arise, you need to pay great attention to the character encoding: "Unicode" or "GSM-alphabet", automatically this is sometimes done not quite right. And this causes problems.

Secondly, there is the possibility of SMS-chat mode ("Dialog" function). You enter your alias and a dialog is displayed on the screen, as, for example, when using ICQ on a computer. On the other side, if the phone does not support chat, a normal SMS message is displayed with the alias at the beginning. A very convenient feature, since incoming messages do not remain in memory, and are erased themselves with each next one.

Thirdly, there is a T9 predictive text input system. She worked for me in three languages - English, German and French.

Fourth, you can send very long messages (up to 480 characters). They are automatically divided into parts, and depending on the length of the text, the message will go in the form of one, two or three SMS. There is an indicator that shows how many characters are already left to the end, and how many messages have already been split into yours.

Fifth, a lot of pleasant things. Emoticons or "smiles" can be inserted into messages, which allow you to convey various emotions. When you meet such icons in the text, it always becomes much more alive. By default, 5 smileys are set, but they can be changed, there is room for three more new ones. You can also insert graphics (up to 13 pictures).

Finally, there are post templates (5 by default + 3 of our own). Some blanks of quite often used phrases, such as "I'm late", "call back", etc. save you the trouble of typing a new message each time. Templates are made in English.

If we talk about the work of the SMS editor in general, then we can note the following shortcomings: some delay when opening messages, the location of messages in the list by name, and not by time of arrival, only manual deletion of messages in case of insufficient memory, the need to manually unlock the keypad upon arrival new message.

Additional set of tools

Among other things, the phone has an alarm clock that can work even when the phone is turned off, and in two modes. In addition to the main "Rise" mode, you can also turn on the "Snooze" mode. In this case, another call will be heard after 5 minutes.

There is also a countdown timer and a stopwatch. Both can be turned on and returned to standby mode. Then a small icon appears on the screen. The division value of the countdown timer and stopwatch are different. The first has 1 minute, and the second has 0.01 seconds.

There are call timers. In the "Calls" menu, you can view the total duration of calls, the duration of incoming calls, outgoing calls and the last call, as well as the cost of calls. It is impossible to determine the time of the last conversation quickly and immediately after the conversation, for this it is necessary to climb into the menu.

Other useful features include an organizer that can contain up to 10 reminders, a calculator and a currency converter. If you initially enter the exchange rate, then you can quickly recalculate by pressing twice only one menu scroll key.

There is also a redirect (menu "Transfer"). It is possible to forward all calls, it is possible when the phone is busy or there is no answer, or when the device is turned off.

When redirecting "No answer", you can set the time interval (from 5 to 30 seconds), after which the redirection occurs.

The phone has 4 more games: "Snake", "Space Impact", "Bantumi" and "Pairs". The games have their own settings: turn on / off the sound, vibration signal, backlight. There is no backlight adjustment in the normal settings.

Phone sensitivity and speech quality

Despite the fact that this phone, as already noted above, has an antenna built into the case, its sensitivity is quite high and does not suffer at all. In many places with poor reception, the phone worked absolutely fine, without failures.

Thus, the internal antenna provides only one advantage: it is comfortable to wear, there is no accident that the antenna breaks off, a more interesting design.

In rare cases, there was an echo, but in general the sound quality is also very good. The sound is soft and natural. In my opinion, this is generally typical for Nokia phones.

Conclusions

In my opinion, the phone turned out to be very successful. Against the backdrop of the Nokia 3210, the Nokia 3310, which is also a mid-range device, clearly stands out as a step forward. Global innovations include vibrating, voice dialing, profile modes, increased size of SMS messages, improved design, the ability to reduce weight using a Li-Ion battery, small ones - emoticons, chat, more toys and others. Perhaps these little things are not always vital, but using them is a pleasure!

Another big plus of the Nokia 3310 is the good sound quality and sensitivity of the device, as well as long-term operation of the phone without recharging. The disadvantages include a weak vibration alert, a not very loud bell, a Ni-MH battery and a not very thoughtful design for changing body panels.

But the advantages of this model greatly overshadow all its shortcomings. And this time the Finns were on top and confirmed their skills in the field of mobile communications.

The most powerful laser in the world 13.08.2015

Scientists from the University of Osaka (Japan) designed an installation that managed to demonstrate a laser pulse with a record power of two petawatts.

The giant LFEX (Laser for Fast Ignition Experiments) laser facility, about 100 meters long, consists of a pumping device and a complex optical system, and its pulse energy fits into one trillionth of a second.

This was achieved by upgrading the optical system with special lamps resembling ordinary fluorescent lamps, but multiplying the beam power.

By comparison, two petawatts of power is about a thousand times greater than the world's total electricity consumption. Now Japanese scientists intend to develop a laser capable of delivering a pulse of 10 petawatts.
