NEC DB2000

The phone itself was in a nice box containing, in addition to the phone, a charger, a battery, instructions in English and advertising brochures from NEC. All contents were carefully packed in small plastic bags.

The first thing, naturally, was to bring out the battery. It turned out that the battery is also part of the back panel of the phone, similar to how it is done, for example, in the Ericsson T10s. The thought immediately arose that after some time of use the battery would move away from the case and there would be problems with the contacts, but it turned out that the design was thought out to the smallest detail, and in addition to the latch on the case, the battery is fixed using grooves in the side walls. Thus, the battery sits very firmly in its socket.

It should be noted that the DB2000 uses a Li-Ion battery (900 mAh), which allows the phone to operate in standby mode for up to 200 hours and talk time for up to 240 minutes. The phone is fully charged using the charger supplied with the device in 1.5-2 hours. With less active use of the phone (up to 20 minutes of calls per day), it is quite possible to spend about 3 days with it. The phone was not turned off at night.

The charger is completely ordinary, but what is noteworthy is that it has automatic selection of operating voltage from 100 to 240 Volts. The charger plug for connecting the phone has “horns” that are tightly fixed in the device.

But before connecting the battery, it was necessary to insert the SIM card into the holder. This model has a metal SIM card holder, which is quite unusual. So, the card is inserted, and the holder securely fixed it. Connect the battery and off you go.

Display

When you turn on the phone, a welcome message appears. You can edit the caption as you wish, but it can only be in English. On this phone I typed "Hello master".

After the phone registers on the network, the cellular operator's inscription appears on the display, as well as the current time, date, day of the week, battery level (a very nice icon consisting of 4 divisions) and signal strength (5 divisions, completed in the form of steps). There are separate icons for forwarding mode, voice mail and SMS messages.

The display is high-contrast, allows you to show up to 4 lines of 12 characters plus a line of icons. The image on the display is clear; due to large letters, information is easily distinguishable even from a relatively large distance. At night, the green backlight allows you to comfortably work with your phone. The backlight is dim, soft - does not irritate the eyes.

Ringtones and ring tones

As usual when setting up a new phone, I began to choose a call for myself. It seems to me that the ringing of a phone very strongly characterizes its owner. In NEC DB2000 you can choose 11 ringing options.

All calls are quite high and shrill. You can adjust the ringer volume to low, medium or high. At a high volume of the call, it is very clearly audible in quiet (calm) places, but in places such as, for example, a coffee shop during rush hour, it is practically indistinguishable, and in addition to the call, you have to turn on a vibration alert.

There are two more options for ringer volume, namely increasing ringing and gradual ringing. If with the first everything was clear from the title, then the second was a mystery for me, which was very easily resolved. This is an option with a gradual decrease in the ringing level from loud to quiet. As the use of the phone has shown, sometimes this volume option can be very convenient.

It should be noted that this model is equipped with a modem that can transmit data at speeds up to 9600 bps. So, for receiving data, you can set your own version of the signal, just like a separate signal for receiving a fax. In this way, all ringing settings can be made separately for voice, data and fax reception. Comfortable…

The vibration alert is quite soft. To feel it, you need to wear the phone on yourself. In your jacket pocket or bag, you can miss a call if the phone only has a vibration alert. On the other hand, a strong vibration alert on other phones sometimes makes you jump in surprise.

The sound of a received SMS message can frighten a healthy person. One gets the feeling that not just a message has arrived, but something that requires urgent decisions. I didn’t like the signal and, unfortunately, I didn’t find a way to change it. Speech quality, sensitivity

Having set up the call, I put the phone in my jeans pocket and went to town. I made my first call from there. The quality of speech in the speakers is good, the sound is clear and the interlocutor can be heard well, as well as me. This model supports EFR, an improved speech codec. But this service must also be supported by the cellular operator, which, unfortunately, is not (yet) provided in Russia. Subsequent use of the phone showed that the first impression of sound quality was very misleading. During conversations, an echo was often heard; the interlocutor could not make out the phrases. The sensitivity of the phone is very, very average. There were no obvious communication failures, but in almost all rooms there was a deterioration in the sound during a conversation, periodic loss of communication due to the inability to continue the conversation. Pulling out the antenna improved the sound quality, but not much. For urban conditions, where the number of base stations is large, the sensitivity of this device is sufficient for conversation on the street, but it is problematic to achieve good sound quality indoors.

One day, for no apparent reason, the phone lost the network and could not register again for a very long time. I had to turn it off and on again, the phone immediately detected the network and registered. The idea arose that this problem was related to incorrect operation of the phone software, but the firmware installed in the phone was native, installed when the phone was manufactured at the NEC plant in England.

Undoubted convenience are such functions as answering a call with any key and automatically dialing the subscriber. Moreover, you can return the phone to traditional settings and then to answer the call you will have to press the button with the image of the phone.

Menu

The organization of the menu is quite simple, each item and sub-item is assigned its own number; by pressing the menu key and typing a number sequence, you can quickly access the required item. You can also simply scroll through the menu items and select the one you need.

So, from the Settings item you can select the menu language; Russian is also present in the list. The Russification of this device deserves a separate discussion, but in short, it’s funny to read translations made by someone unknown. This is a subjective opinion, but I didn’t like Russification. The second big drawback is that if there is support for the Russian language, entries in the phone book can only be made in English, German and Greek.

Otherwise, the menu is quite large and detailed, allowing you to enable and disable many functions, from managing call forwarding and voicemail to controlling the LED installed in the phone. The last function is quite convenient, since, for example, I don’t like it when the LED on my phone blinks, but others, on the contrary, like it.

In the menu you can set the mode for displaying timers during a call. So, the phone can show not only the time of the current conversation, but also the total time of calls or the total time of outgoing calls.

The remaining menu items allow you to configure your phone no less carefully.

The big drawback, in my opinion, is that when setting functions from the menu, when saving, the phone automatically exits menu mode. You have to log in again and go through all the menus to change the settings. On the other hand, the user does not change his settings so often and, having adjusted everything once, leaves the phone alone.

A very convenient function is to enable profiles, there are only 4 of them:

  • normal, all your settings work
  • meeting, vibration alert works, all sound signals are disabled
  • in your pocket, the keypad lock is activated
  • earphone, call is heard in the telephone headset

These modes are activated by pressing the up key and then selecting the desired item from the list.

Phone book

There is a separate button for calling up the phone book. When you click on it, the name and phone number from the address book appear, then you can scroll through the book in search of the desired number. In addition to the SIM card memory, the memory of the phone itself can be used, allowing you to save up to 99 numbers with names. All attempts to find a way to enter a number in the phone book without instructions ended in failure. I had to go to the instructions and read. The method turned out to be not the most obvious and easy. So, to add a number to your phone, you need to dial it, then click on the phone book call button, confirm entering the number, fill out the name field and then save the number in an empty cell. After saving, you will be asked to enter a new number again.

After two days of using the phone, this method no longer seemed unusual and even turned out to be convenient. There is no need to enter the address book and you can immediately enter the number dialed during a conversation on the keyboard.

For each number, you can assign your own ring tone (up to 20 numbers) from the list of melodies provided in the phone.

Editing and deleting entries in the phone book is easy, accessing the menu is just a matter of pressing and holding the phone book button.

The phone also keeps a list of the last missed, received and made calls. It is quite convenient to call the numbers you have already called, but looking at missed and received calls is difficult, since you need to call up lists from the menu, or remember the sequence for quick access to this menu. As a rule, on phones from other manufacturers, the list of missed, received and made calls is combined into one for easy access to phone numbers.

It should be noted that the number identification function on this phone worked very poorly, despite the fact that this service is network and provided by a cellular operator. An explanation may be that the quality of this service depends on the software of the phone and the cellular company's switch. In my case, MTS has a switch from Siemens, and the service was initially tested with phones from this company. Accordingly, phones from Siemens work most correctly with the number identification service in the MTS network, but not all phones from other companies (or rather software) are able to interact as fully with the switch software. This leads to problems when using the NEC DB2000.

Results

A well-made phone with a long battery life on a single charge. Another undoubted advantage is that the battery is Li-Ion. But, despite the fact that this device has an external antenna, the sensitivity is average. However, in the city you can use the phone more or less comfortably only on the street. The design of the device is made with men in mind, since this phone will not look good in a woman’s hand. This is also evidenced by the relatively large weight of 130 grams. One can argue about the appearance of the device, but there will certainly be people who will like the silver front panel of the NEC DB2000.

The ringtones are very high-pitched and, unfortunately, there is no option to add your own melody.

According to reviews from Western users, phones from NEC, and in particular the NEC DB2000, are very reliable and do not suffer from slight sensitivity. Unfortunately, the sample that was provided to our laboratory for testing did not confirm this. Possible problems are associated with incorrect operation of the phone software, because support for a large number of languages in these devices appeared quite recently along with a new software version.

Due to the unknown nature of NEC cell phones in Russia, it is almost impossible to find any accessories for them. The phone case was never found after a persistent search. It can be assumed that, despite the presence of a large number of original accessories, they are only available in Europe.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Flying a little lower, the plane harms the environment less 07.02.2024

A study of six million airline flights found that small changes in altitude during flight can significantly reduce harmful emissions from aircraft engines that contribute to global warming.

A temporary change in altitude would allow planes to avoid areas of high humidity and pressure, which contribute to the formation of aircraft trails - water vapor and soot, which cause significant environmental damage, no less than carbon dioxide emissions.

Scientists from the Technical University of Delft estimate that if 61 percent of the planes examined lowered their altitude by 326 meters, and 39 percent, on the contrary, rose to 305 meters, then emissions of water vapor and soot would be significantly reduced. These changes do not require significant additional fuel consumption and do not increase safety risks, but only allow aircraft to avoid areas with high humidity and temperatures less than 40 degrees Celsius, which contribute to the formation of wakes.

Scientists believe that more than half of the flights could allow altitude changes within 609 meters, which would be enough to reduce the formation of wakes behind aircraft. While these measures will not reduce carbon dioxide emissions from fuel consumption, they will still help reduce aviation's global warming contribution, which accounts for five percent of total human-caused activity.

Changing the altitude of aircraft can be an effective strategy to reduce their environmental impact, promoting cleaner skies and less contribution to global warming.
