MOTOROLA V66. Mobile phone overview
Review
Externally v66 resembles other flip phones from Motorola, but has a more rounded shape and smaller dimensions (84 x 44 x 21 mm). The weight is also extremely small - only 79 grams. One of the side effects of reducing the weight of the phone was a decrease in the capacity of the lithium-ion battery (500 mAh) - you have to pay for miniaturization. Nevertheless, the phone's standby time is up to 180 hours, and talk time - up to 3 hours, according to the manufacturer. In urban conditions, with an average call duration of up to 20 minutes a day, the device functioned normally, as a rule, for about 3 days without turning it off at night. In the case of a large number of calls, the operating time is reduced to 2 days from a single charge (lasting just over 2 hours). During charging, the corresponding inscription is displayed on the screen, the battery indicator flashes, but while the process is in progress, it does not show how charged the battery is. By the way, like on other recent models from Motorola, the v66 travel charger has a new connector and is not compatible with older models. Outwardly, only the shape of the plug has changed in the charger. The SIM-card holder in v66 is located not in the usual place (under the battery), but under the front plastic lens - this is the name of the plastic overlay in promotional materials (it is located on the front surface of the top of the phone). The design of the holder is traditional and does not deserve a separate description; everything is quite safe. But pay attention: the lens itself is fixed at three points, its lower part is slightly raised, and there is a small recess in the body so that it can be easily hooked and removed. In general, the design is extremely unusual and is clearly designed to save space. The phone will come with two lenses of different colors. Many lenses of various colorings can be purchased separately. Quite an interesting undertaking for a company whose phones have always been characterized by ascetic design - times are changing. By the way, this model will be delivered to Russia in two versions - silver and dark blue metallic (I would say that this is the color of asphalt). The keyboard on the device is quite small, which is directly related to its size. The keys are small and not always comfortable to press. The navigation keys located under the display are the most unsuccessfully implemented: not only are they small, they are also recessed into the case. A smart key has been preserved on the left side surface, which gives access to many functions, depending on which menu item you are in. This key is a legacy of past models. In T280, they refused to use it, but they kept it here; presumably this should make it easier to get used to v66 users of previous models with smart keys. Menu, display and some functions This model uses a menu familiar to us from other devices from the new line, such as Motorola T280. Let me remind you that the menu in the latest models is more friendly: the settings are not lumped together, and the most used functions are placed in separate items. There is no quick menu navigation, but the user has the ability to set up 9 shortcuts for quick access to any menu item or submenu. In my opinion, this is enough for most people. By the way, the v66 display itself is very remarkable. The user can change the font size at his own discretion, and if it is reduced, in addition to the top row of icons and labels, two or three lines of text will be displayed for soft keys at the bottom of the screen (screen resolution 64x96 pixels). But most importantly, it became possible to choose the color of the display backlight (red, orange and green): this is the first Motorola GSM phone with such a function. In addition to the display, the service indicator catches the eye, which is located at the top of the phone and is visible even when it is closed. If there is a network, the indicator flashes green, in the absence of it - red. The indicator signals about an incoming call by flashing green with red, about a message - yellow with green. But the most amazing thing is that this option can be turned off, because to me, for example, it seems very stupid. Due to the smaller screen, the appearance of some menu items in v66 has changed. A headset with built-in FM radio will be available as an optional accessory for the v66. This headset will be supported at the phone software level, which means not only the ability to control it from the device, but also the ability to search for radio stations by their names previously entered by the user into the phone. The device provides three games, but it would be better not to have them. The first game, Blackjack, is nothing interesting, the second, a variation on the theme of the school game "bull and cow", is also boring. The last toy generally evokes universal melancholy: you need to hit a ball that flies back and forth with a racket, hit it easily. As soon as you miss the ball, you are congratulated on the x number of points scored. In a word, sheer tediousness. Let me remind you that in v66, just like in T280, there is support for the Russian language when entering entries in the phone book and typing SMS messages. Other functions are also identical, I will indicate them in one list:
Subjective impressions So, v66 is distinguished by very small size and rich functional equipment. The sensitivity of the device is average, but an echo is often heard. In addition, it was very difficult for me to adapt to this phone: when it is unfolded, it is not very convenient to talk for some reason. I can’t explain what this is connected with, but the fact remains, and this despite the fact that with the v50 I didn’t have such problems at all. The volume of the speaker is enough for conversations on the street and in other noisy places. The disadvantages also include the inconvenience of working with the keyboard and a weak vibrating alert: in winter outerwear you will not feel it at all. With the pluses, I think everything is clear, but for me personally, the minuses negate all the advantages of this device. Сonclusion It seems to me that this fashion device will be bought first of all by people who want to emphasize their status, and they will not worry about the convenience of working with the phone. The main criteria for them will be the price and recognition of the model, and the v66 will not be able to complain about this. This assumption is also supported by the fact that Motorola does not bundle this phone with either software for GPRS operation with PC or a cable for connecting to PC.
