MOTOROLA TIMEPORT P7389

I will say right away that my former NMT-450 Nokia 550 phone has long ceased to suit me, as, in fact, communication in this standard (just don’t scold me for this). Inability to use roaming, no number identification service, SMS, constant interference (I live in a densely populated part of the city and every time I make a call in the room I had to run to the window and extend the antenna, but even in this case the connection was often interrupted). Sometimes, when I was driving in a car, the connection was cut off right during the conversation. I do not argue, in terms of coverage, NMT is a first-class standard. I was able to talk even in those places that are not included in the official coverage area (in open space, of course). But lately, GSM has almost caught up with NMT in this parameter, and in some places only GSM phones work (for example, in the metro). And so I started looking for a phone that would meet the following criteria:

  • good communication quality;
  • vibrating alert;
  • the absence of easily breaking structural elements such as opening covers, movable elements, removable panels;
  • the presence of a digital voice recorder;
  • the ability to connect a telephone headset (Handsfree);
  • the presence of programmable sound signals of the talk time (timers);
  • voice dialing and hot key dialing;
  • backlit buttons, the ability to connect an external antenna;
  • small size.

Looking ahead a bit, I'll say that the phone I chose, Motorola P7389, satisfies much more serious needs than mine. I would not like to receive a mountain of indignant letters from fans of interchangeable panels and flips. I do not impose my point of view on anyone, I just have my own requirements for a mobile phone.

So, the first point is high-quality communication: this is the most important thing, because the phone is not a toy, but a means of communication, and not a cheap one; all other features are just additions! And no matter what they tell me, I will never change the phone to a smaller size and equipped with more features if it has a worse call quality. Now about the vibrating alert: where the sound signal is undesirable or hard to hear (for example, in a car with a good audio system or at a meeting, lecture, in public transport), this is an indispensable function. I like it when the music in the car sounds very loud, and no phone will shout down my Clarion (he spoke directly in verse :))! Therefore, many calls were not received before. The times when the "music" of a mobile phone was fashionable, and spoke of the wealth of its owner, have passed. Now you will have to blush and be gifted with disapproving glances if the phone "rings" at the wrong moment. And with the vibrating alert turned on, when only you know that they are calling you, you can apologize, move away and talk freely. I only use vibrate, a regular call only at home or when I play table tennis, and the phone is nearby.

The "HandsFree" set (free hands) is also an extremely useful thing, and I am sure that soon our country will introduce a fine for using a mobile phone without such a device while driving in a car, as was recently done in Germany and other countries.

When something is dictated to you (phone, address, account number, etc.), but there is no way to write it down, for example, you are driving or on the street and there are no writing instruments at hand, a voice recorder is very useful. As for flips, sliders, removable panels and other movable structural elements, I personally am categorically against it. With the active lifestyle that I lead, the phone can fall, hit, sand can get into the case on the beach, and in general, everything that moves and is removed is known to everyone: it breaks easier. In addition, my phone is always in a case that protects against scratches and dirt - if there were moving elements in the design, this would be impossible. Again, because of them, it is inconvenient to press the lower keys when editing text. Removable colored panels are just a toy I don't need. Such things may appeal to women or creative people who look at all the surrounding objects as a work of art, and the monotony tires and annoys them.

Programmable tones help you save money by letting you know how much more you can talk for free. When the timer is set for a certain second of the conversation, then when it comes up, a quiet squeak is heard in the speaker. Let me explain: when in Ukraine per-second billing after the 30th second was very popular, and by setting the signal, for example, on the 25th, I gave myself a signal that it was time to round off. Now, when all operators have switched to per-second billing from the first second, the importance of voice signals has fallen. But still, you can turn it on for "free" seconds, or when using roaming, where there is no per-second billing.

Why do you need voice dialing? This is a very handy feature, you don't have to remember anything (neither the phone number, nor how to get to the phone book): just say the name - and the phone rang! Everything else, I hope, is clear and does not require explanation.

I must say that I prefer Motorola phones because of the flattering reviews of my friends, and for a long time I had a Motorola pager, from which I was simply delighted! So, I first chose the Motorola CD-930 model, but it turned out to be quite large in size, and there was no voice dialing. Then my choice fell on the Motorola L7089 model: it differs from the P7389 model only in the absence of a WAP browser and some other functions (with complete external identity). However, in the end I became the owner of the P7389 model: the phone was brought to me from Sweden, and there they cost the same. It cost me $230 (including $13 for the Handsfree set).

Equipment

The phone came to me in a box with a receipt, a one-year warranty (applies to all Motorola service centers), an intelligent charger, a rubber cap for the hands free jack, a CD-ROM with programs for Windows 95/98 to configure the infrared port and an English manual CD-ROM, belt clip and phone manual in Swedish…

The battery is standard, Li-Ion 500 mAh. In reality, one full charge of the battery is enough for three days with conversations of 5-10 minutes. and several (2-3) SMS per day. With longer conversations, up to 15-20 minutes. per day, and receiving / sending 5-10 SMS by the end of the second day of using the device, a message often appears about the need to recharge. If the device is turned off for the night (from 23.00 to 7-8.00), then the charge was always enough for three days. Fast battery charging takes about 4-5 hours.

The charger is intelligent, there is no recharging, which means that you do not risk anything by leaving the phone to charge even more than the prescribed 10-12 hours.

Appearance

A small, elegant phone, which immediately feels the style of the manufacturer. It is available in three versions: black, silver, aquamarine (chameleon). Fits comfortably in the hand, has an external removable 3 cm antenna bent down, which is generally typical for Motorola phones. Without an antenna, the network indicator shows an average of one less bar (out of six) in the reception scale. The blinking indicator is directed forward (in previous models it was directed upwards). Nearby, just in the middle, is an infrared port. The on-off button is located at the very bottom, recessed. If you accidentally touch it or if you drop it, the phone will not turn off: to do this, you need to hold the button down for at least a second. The menu button sticks out a little, so the phone, placed "face" down, does not touch the surface with the display, but balances on the button, which is probably not accidental. But the display is still slightly recessed into the surface, so there will be no damage from contact with an uneven or rough surface in any case.

The navigation cursor (in the form of two arrows) is located just below the menu button. On either side of it is a voice mail button and a button to access the quick menu. On the side surfaces there is one button on the right (to activate the digital voice recorder) and three on the left (volume change (two), and a voice function button). Due to the fact that the relatively heavy battery is located in the lower half of the phone, it is very easy, holding the phone in your hand, to “click” on the buttons with the thumb of the same hand. The buttons are rubberized, non-recessed, easy to press; it is somewhat difficult to make a mistake with the buttons or press at the same time. The keys reminded me of a quality Logitech keyboard. When you press the button, the finger feels an inaudible click, which I really like, and the keys do not "walk" sideways, which is typical for some phones from other manufacturers with rubber buttons. The side buttons during a conversation are right under the fingers, which allows you to change the volume or use the voice recorder right during a conversation (of course, the menu is not available during a conversation). When you put the speaker to your ear, the microphone is not near your mouth, but next to your cheek, but its high sensitivity fully compensates for this shortcoming.

The size of the phone can not be called too small, rather medium. So you won’t wear it in a shirt pocket, but it fits easily on a belt, in a jacket, jacket, and does not interfere with walking or sitting.

Включение

The SIM card is installed easily and securely fixed (snaps into place with a plastic cover).

After installing the SIM card and recharging the battery, I finally

turned on the phone, which immediately showed the time, mind you - for sure! Then I entered the Pin-code, waited a few seconds, and the red blinking of the indicator changed to green, indicating that the phone was in the reception area. The red light indicates that there is no connection, the yellow one indicates that the phone is in the roaming zone. If desired, the indicator can be turned off.

The operator's name, signal strength indicator and battery charge indicator appeared on the display; a bell lit up on the display, informing us that the bell is on. If the bell is not visible on the display, then the vibrating alert is on. The screen is medium in size, the image contrast is adjustable. I will say that "high contrast" is a very accurate description of the display! It is clearly visible in any light - from complete darkness to bright sunny weather. Up to 5 lines of text are displayed at the same time. The buttons, when pressed, "beep", and you can change both the tone and the volume of the "beep" up to its complete shutdown.

The number of ringtones suited me (11), I was pleased with the possibility of creating my own melody. As for the ringer settings: it is possible to set a vibrating call, a regular ringer, a vibrating + ringer (after vibrating twice, the phone switches to a regular ringer) and a ringer mute, when only by alternating red and yellow flashing of the LED and the corresponding display indication you can determine what you are calling. In the "call" mode, you can make sure that incoming calls and SMS are indicated by different melodies. In vibro + ring mode, the phone responds to SMS with triple vibration (you can't confuse it with a regular call). The vibrating alert is quite powerful, it feels good even when the phone is in the outer pocket of the sheepskin coat. The bell is quite loud, well heard even in the forging and pressing shop, while the volume is easily adjustable.

I did not hope to find a menu in Russian, but I decided to find out everything to the end. And what? Amazingly, Motorola offers menus in both Russian and Ukrainian. I chose Russian. What can I tell you? Again we were cheated. Words with unpleasant abbreviations, irregularly shaped letters, for example, "ь" for some reason was large ... One of the menu items I present to your attention: "choice of sound. keyboard support", which probably means "selection of the sound of the keys ... Returned back, so, by the way, I still use the English menu. It's more convenient for me, but I agree that this will not suit everyone. Nationalists will be especially indignant.

A small rubber "stud" turned out to be a plug (cork) for the hands free socket.

I packed all this in a case, where, in addition to holes for the speaker and microphone, there are also holes for headphones, an infrared port, an antenna, an LED, and a charger.

communication

In a word, perfect! The phone met all my expectations. The quality of communication indoors, in a car at high speed and for a long time (passed half of Kiev), in an open space, even outside the city - in a word, wherever there was a reception - they were on top. Excellent audibility "at both ends of the wire." At first, the interlocutors did not believe that I was calling from the street or at full speed from the car. With almost zero reception, voice distortion and interference in the form of noise and crackling, of course, were, but not very significant, my acquaintances and I easily recognized my acquaintances. During peak hours, when the network was busy, during the conversation there was sometimes a slight monotonous noise, and a slight distortion of the voice, as if poorly digitized, which has nothing to do with the phone. I tried to speak without an antenna, but despite the acceptable reception scale, there was "metal", which greatly interfered with a normal conversation. However, in the vast majority of cases, I must say that the connection was just great, and it was possible to forget that I was talking on a mobile phone! I respect Motorola phones for the quality of communication! I fully share the opinion that has developed among mobile phone sellers that Motorola devices are unrivaled in terms of communication quality (of course, we are not talking about miniature models of this company). We should also not forget that Motorola releases army walkie-talkies, and this is saying something ...

For the sake of objectivity, I must still say that once, when I wanted to know my balance (the reception indicator showed three divisions out of six), the phone during the call hung up the way a computer freezes. Other numbers didn't answer either. Calling to my mobile (from a landline phone), I found out that "the direction is overloaded." The problem was solved after turning it off and on, probably it was connected with the operator? .. Later I found out that this happened not only to me. Sometimes the phone refused to work, just interrupted the connection, in a computer club, perhaps, it reacted to a computer network?!

Recently, my operator, due to the "influx" of a large number of subscribers, began upgrading the network. There were constant overloads, and frequent network outages. During peak hours, sometimes I had to call 10-15 times, sometimes it was impossible at all, and the call quality was simply disgusting. Even calling from "familiar" points, I was simply amazed at how bad the quality of communication can be, despite the fact that literally yesterday it was perfect, and this is considering that the reception scale was almost full. The abundance of noise, cod, extraneous voices, "metallic" voice distortion, and in addition to everything, an ECHO appeared - I heard my voice in the receiver! Despite this, and the fact that the interlocutor sometimes disappeared from the air for several minutes (a subscriber of the same network), the phone did not cut off the connection even once! Considering that the network often disappeared, I watched how quickly the phone "returned" it. I am proud to say that my phone did this much faster than many other phones, they sometimes had delays up to 30-40 seconds after mine. This is despite the fact that the "network search" in my menu was set to the "medium" level. I assure you, dear readers, that there was nothing like this when the network was not "modernized", and returned to normal after it was completed!

Menu

Well, as long as you can say that the menu of Motorola phones is uncomfortable, unfortunate... Believe me, you shouldn't pay attention to these statements: it's just "not like that". It may surprise you that some items are unusually located, for example, in the "call functions" for some reason there was a sub-item "show battery indicator" ... This menu seems to me convenient and understandable; its minus is the lack of a hint, but it is in the instructions on 180 pages (the volume of the menu, by the way, is also not small)! Navigation can be carried out only with the help of two keys ("menu" and "OK"), you can not even use the arrows. Numerous menu items and sub-items are arranged very logically (in most cases), difficulties with their development can only be caused by poor translation, sometimes distorting the meaning of words beyond recognition. Each menu directory can be locked with a password. Motorola's special pride is the quick menu, where the desired function is selected in a matter of seconds. Up to nine functions are installed, all in the form of beautiful icons with captions, at a time on the screen 6. Not enough? Please, 9 more can be configured per voice tag. Still not enough? You can use the Smart key ... And most importantly: it does not affect the main menu in any way! For example, I don't use the main menu at all, my quick menu settings are as follows:

  • vibration alert
  • read SMS
  • SMS editor
  • add to phone book
  • search in phone memory
  • play voice notes
  • forwarding, unanswered calls

I do not use the latter (but it is still present), and you can configure it, for example, add it to the SIM card, or caller ID ... I think that using the quick menu is much more convenient than the menu of phones from other companies.

On the radio market, craftsmen offer to reflash the firmware, after which programming of another (tenth) item of the quick menu will become available. But I did not dare to entrust them with a new device, because I did not want to risk the guarantee. It is also possible to upload a normal Russian menu there.

What else can we do?

The phone determines the number of the caller (if this function is supported by the operator) and automatically compares it with the phone book, in case of "recognition" of the number, the name is displayed on the display:

The call can be answered by pressing any button except the red one. If you do not want to answer the call, then you should press the red button - the call will be interrupted. You can also press any volume control button once (on the side panel) and then the phone will turn off the ringer. So nothing will distract, and the subscriber unpleasant to you will consider that you are far from the phone. The last 10 outgoing and incoming calls (both received and not received) are recorded in memory with date and time. You can set a ban on incoming and outgoing calls, call forwarding, call waiting, conference calls (5 + 1). A second line is provided (with the support of the operator and only in GSM 1800\1900 networks). Call forwarding is possible when the phone is busy, unavailable, or constantly. In addition, voice, fax or data messages can be forwarded separately, which must be supported by the operator. To access voice mail there is a separate key.

The keyboard is locked by pressing * and # at the same time, and it is unlocked in the same way. During blocking, the call remains the same - any button. I advise you to block the keypad when you carry the phone with you, because twice by itself (probably pressed by the jacket) the WAP browser was activated, and I ended up on the Internet without even knowing it. This lock is not very convenient, because when you are driving in a car, you will need both hands to lock. So it's better to block your phone in advance. Answering the call does not cancel the locked state.

The display has a three-bar battery level indicator. The menu has an additional indicator with ten divisions, but its accuracy leaves much to be desired: sometimes there were jumps of 4-5 divisions at once. We must pay tribute to the fact that in fact this indicator is not needed, since it completely duplicates the small one (it consists of 10 divisions, and does not decrease by less than three divisions). It is possible to configure the display of the talk time on the display. The digital voice recorder, as I have already said, is turned on by pressing the button on the right side surface once, and it can be turned off - any. The number of voice notes is limited not by their number, but by the total time (3 minutes). They can only be removed all together. The recorder can be used to record both telephone and ordinary conversations, since the high sensitivity of the microphone provides an acceptable recording quality. It should be noted that the designers could have increased the voice recorder's capacity by lowering the encoding quality or introducing an efficient algorithm for voice compression (after all, there is no need for special quality here: these are not CD-ROMs, and not Hi-Fi components, but for some reason this question is so not solved, because 3 minutes was already a long time ago, in the younger models.Obviously, this block completely suits the developers and they do not modify it over time.

When an SMS is received, a blinking image of the letter lights up on the indicator. If the message is not read within a minute, a small envelope will appear on the screen, reminding you of unread letters. In the SMS editing mode, you can enable the iTAP™ function, but keep in mind: when typing Russian text in Latin letters, iTAP is useless. You can send your messages as text, fax, e-mail, voice, paging, X400 (ISO standard for e-mail), ERMES (European Radio Messaging System - European radio frequency messaging standard; ERMES standard).

Auto redial (up to 10 times) is one of the most useful functions of the device, if it is supported by the operator. This function is implemented quite interestingly. You have dialed a number - but it is busy, which will be indicated to you by the inscription on the display. Then "call back?" will light up. ("Redial?"), press OK to confirm, or do nothing to cancel. If you pressed OK, then you can safely put the phone in your pocket or in another place, when there is a "dial" the phone will inform you about this by ringing when the call is on, or by a single vibration if the vibrating alert is on. You can set the option "do not show the number" (number determinant), then the subscriber will not know who is calling him, but the service must be ordered from the operator, from my 30u.e.

Voice dialing (up to 25 numbers). To use this feature, you must store the number in the phone's memory, not in the SIM card. After entering the name, number, save location, the phone asks: "Should I add a voice tag?" ("Add Voice Tag?") Press OK, then after the signal, repeat the name (or any word) twice and that's it. To activate the dialing, press the voice dialing button, it is also called the "smart" button (Smart button), on the left side, and after the signal, say the name. The phone repeats it (from the speaker), asks to confirm the call and, even if nothing is pressed, dials the number in a second. Nice feature, but… It doesn't work in very noisy places. Sometimes - when pronouncing unknown words - it can call in the wrong place. By the way, my girlfriend's voice "liked" the phone, and she activated my voice tags with her pleasant voice. There is another way to quickly dial a number from memory: enter the cell number and press #.

If you plug the plug into the Handsfree jack, the "Accessory options" item appears in the menu. By default, the phone is programmed to receive a call after two rings. You can connect your phone to the car radio (you need a special adapter and professional installation), and when you call, the phone will automatically mute the music, "pick up the phone" and output the voice to the car's speakers, if, of course, this is supported by the car radio.

In some situations, it is useful to know the following: if you do not want someone to read the information from the phone, it is not necessary to break it, drown it, melt it, blow it up ... It provides for a return to the factory settings, after entering the password, of course. I hope this feature is still useful to no one! You can just destroy the SIM card, and not drown the phone. All settings will be gone. One U.S. criminal recently ate such a card before being arrested, making the investigation much more difficult.

WAP and infrared

To start working with the WAP browser, you need to activate the WAP service with the operator, and then enter a whole bunch of settings. To work with the infrared port, you must first configure the software on the device that has an infrared port, then place the handset motionless with the "head" to it and activate the port from the phone menu. Now you can use your phone as a modem (9600) or fax. It will be expensive, of course ... TrueSync® software is designed to synchronize the process of transferring data from phone to computer and vice versa. Using the infrared port, you can fill in the phone book, set passwords, create your own melodies, etc.

If your provider supports the Internet, then you can use your laptop and mobile phone even in an open field without a single wire to access the Web. And surprise with this all goitered gazelles and gophers along with eagles and golden eagles. Prove your toughness. If money is not a pity.

pros

  • Impeccable connection quality!
  • Loud ringer and powerful vibrating alert, user-friendly display and buttons, attractive design.
  • The presence of a huge number of functions that easily turn the phone into an SMS and e-mail editor, WAP browser, fax, modem, address book, clock, voice recorder.
  • The ability to use roaming in every country where there is a GSM standard, for example, in the USA (my operator has a roaming agreement with the USA only in the GSM 1900 standard, and I do not need to change the device there).
  • Voice dialing.
  • Availability of accessories for sale in different price categories.
  • The presence of iTAP dictionaries, which can significantly speed up and simplify typing.

Cons

  • Lack of an alarm clock, calculator, organizer… sometimes I would like to!
  • Lack of full support for the Russian language, including in SMS.
  • Incorrect battery level indicator.
  • The inconvenience of blocking the keyboard (two buttons at the same time).
  • Price (?!!) Assuming, of course, that a phone with such a wide range of functions can cost less ...

Eventually…

Who is this phone for? Obviously not for those who need games, interchangeable panels, pictures and the like, which have become fashionable lately. This phone is intended, first of all, for people who need high-quality communication, for those who often travel abroad and use roaming services, for those who will use the WAP browser and / or infrared port, because the price of the phone is considerable and in largely determined by their presence. Personally, I recommend getting a nice leather case that does not interfere with the infrared port.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Acoustic sensors on military helmets will detect snipers 25.05.2009

Remembering the aphorism "If you want peace, prepare for war," American engineers are increasingly equipping the armor of their soldiers with all kinds of electronics.

Specialists from Vanderbilt University completed the development in 2006, and have now completed testing of a system that will help the infantryman during protracted street battles. These are four sensors on the helmet plus a processor and a transmitter. Sensors perceive shock waves from a shot from a sniper rifle and from a bullet flying at supersonic speed.

The processor determines the direction by the parameters of the first wave, and the distance to the shooter by the second wave. The sensitivity of the entire system would be low if the helmets of all the soldiers in the platoon were not equipped with similar sensors and the data did not enter the commander's computer.

The display of this computer displays information about the position of the sniper, even if he is perfectly camouflaged. The whole system weighs the same as the four AA batteries that power it, and costs 1000 US dollars, and it can be assembled from parts available on the market.
