MOTOROLA M3788. Mobile phone overview Review The handset was produced by Motorola, a well-established company in the communications market, known primarily for its consistently high product quality, practically independent of the phone's price group. Indeed, the tube is assembled soundly, for the entire period of operation I have not been able to detect any significant defects. Even the battery cover does not dangle (this drawback is often found in relatively cheap phones). The device is a further development of the M3288 model, it appeared on the market in early January 2000 and immediately took a stable position. A few words about instructions Complete with a handset in a beautiful box, you can find a battery, a cover that covers it, a charger that operates from a home network, and an instruction manual in Russian. It is compiled in sufficient detail, all functions and manipulations are painted to the smallest detail. The only thing I want to pay attention to is annoying typos that can ruin the life of a gullible user. Here's the thing: suppose you suddenly forgot your PIN code three times in a row and it was blocked, and a stupid device asks for some kind of PUK. When the first panic has passed and a piece of paper with a bunch of numbers marked as the same PUK is found, do not rush to get into the instructions, it's better to look again at my article. To enter the PUK code input mode, you need to press not "<,<,0,5,<" (as the manufacturer advises), but "*,*,0,5,*" and then follow the instructions. On many phones of this company, the * and # signs coincide with the < and > buttons, but on the M3788 they do not (probably this explains the typo). I know two people who tried to do the described manipulation according to the instructions - both changed the permanently blocked SIM card (for additional money, of course). Another subtlety, about which nothing is said in the instructions: to lock / unlock the keyboard, you need to press # and * in sequence. Many owners who use phones of this model are not even aware of the possibility of blocking the keypad. The rest of the instructions are accurate. Appearance Now about the device itself. You can’t name a particularly light handset: the weight is 170 grams (with a battery), you see, it’s a bit much. External dimensions 140*50*28 allow you to carry the phone in a bag or on your belt, but it is unlikely to fit in a shallow pocket. Additional difficulties are created by a long non-retractable antenna, tightly fixed to the top of the case. As standard, power is supplied from a nickel battery. In standby mode, it can work up to 110 hours, conversation - about 230 minutes (I cited advertising data, in fact, the call waiting time is less by about 20 hours). There are also batteries with a higher capacity, but they are heavier than the standard one. For proper charging, the developers have provided an overflow indication, so that the device is able to regulate the required charging time itself. In addition, four AAA AA batteries can be used as an energy source, however, you will have to buy a special cover for them. Try not to remove the battery from the device once again, as this can damage the rather flimsy power connector of the phone. Another tip: since the standard battery is nickel, remember about the "memory effect" (I'll explain it easier: if you charge a battery that is not completely discharged, then the next time it will sit down faster). As a result, you either need to discharge it every time, or constantly use a charger-discharge device. The SIM-card holder on this model is reliable, there are no difficulties when using it. Even a frequent change of cards does not lead to its failure. On the front of the phone is a relatively large LCD screen that can accommodate 5 lines of text or graphics. It is worth noting that the predecessor's screen contained only two lines of text, and there was no possibility of placing pictures. The image is not particularly clear and bright, but it is still easy to read. What pleased me was a pleasant greenish backlight that allows you to easily use the phone in the dark (you can turn it off by activating the power saving mode through the menu). The keyboard of the phone, located under the screen, seemed very convenient to me. The buttons are large enough, so you can hit the right one with your finger the first time (this fact is an indisputable advantage if you often use the device while driving a car). The on / off key is located in the lower left corner of the main keyboard. It is not recessed into the case, it is pressed just as easily as the other buttons. Hence the obvious design flaw: if you forget to turn on the keypad lock, there is a high probability of accidentally turning off the phone. For those who first encountered the brainchild of Motorola, I will explain the meaning of some of the function keys. On the top right there is a round "OK" button intended for making a call or confirming the selected menu item. Below it are two arrows to the right / left. They are used to enter the main menu and move around in it. In order to erase an incorrectly typed number, the "C" key marked in red is intended (you can erase the entire number with one press, for this you need to hold it a little longer). The same button is used to exit menu items without saving. The up arrow is for entering the "quick access menu". Below it is a key that is responsible for adjusting the volume of the speaker. Below there is a port for connecting to a computer. The socket for connecting the charger is somewhat unusual - on the right side of the case. On the left is a similar headphone jack. It's easy enough to mix them up, so if the charger pin doesn't want to sink into the phone, check to see if you're trying to insert it into the hole. At the top of the rear panel there is a connector for connecting an external antenna, it is not covered by anything and therefore quickly becomes clogged with dust. The standard antenna has an impressive size; when dropped, it often breaks down, and the repair costs (at the prices of a company service) in such a situation are comparable to the price of a new device. The phone does not like drops and moisture at all. Among the most common mechanical failures are a broken screen, a cracked case, and a broken antenna. Some "reduce injuries" allow covers, but more on accessories later. Menus and functions The first thing that the device requires after turning on is to enter the code. Without it, you can only call the rescue service. We dial four numbers and get to the main page. In the upper left corner there is a signal level indicator, in the upper right corner there is a battery charge indicator resembling a battery (according to its readings, you can only judge the state of the battery in advance, for a more accurate assessment there is a special item in the menu). On the right is the "call on" indicator: if you turn off the sound call through the menu, this icon will be crossed out on the screen. It is very convenient, because you do not have to climb into the menu once again to control. The name of the mobile operator is placed in the center of the display. Unfortunately, the phone does not have a clock or an alarm clock. It's a pity: I use these options quite often on other devices. Another obvious disadvantage (but only for devices that have not been pre-trained) is that the phone does not support the Russian language in the basic configuration. You can, of course, go to a service center where the phone will be "Russified", but you will have to pay separately for changing the software. Now about the menu. There are two of them in the phone (I did not like any). The manufacturer, obviously overdoing it with the main one, was forced "to simplify the design" to introduce a "quick access menu". First things first: the main menu contains not only control functions, but also a notebook (only 40 numbers fit in the device itself, the remaining 255 numbers are on the SIM card). Working with the records themselves does not cause difficulties, since the necessary item can be found both by the cell number and by part of the name. To correctly configure the desired parameter of the phone, you will have to read the instructions for a long time: many items are located very illogically. The fact that the device asks for confirmation of any nonsense every time makes me personally nervous. With the "quick access menu" it's a little easier: there are not so many items in it, and they all have their own graphic icon, duplicated by text (appears from below only when moving to the cursor icon). By default, the most necessary functions are included in the quick access menu. If you are not used to thinking in a standard way, then you can also transfer some of the items from the main menu there. Now let's go over the main features. The first, of course, is listening to calls. There are 11 melodies to choose from. Ring volume levels 7, you can also put a "visual call". Then, instead of a call, the backlight lights up, there is no sound accompaniment. Unfortunately, this model does not have a vibrating alert. The last 10 dialed numbers are stored in the phone's memory, you can set up (the service must be supported by the operator) accounting for the cost of calls. If the number identification system is enabled, the phone will also save the numbers of the last 10 unanswered calls (it's a pity, but it does not record the time when the call was missed). I often use the auto-dial and call forwarding functions. You can enable them from the shortcut menu. I already said about the lack of a clock and an alarm clock, I can only note that there are craftsmen who, having reflashed the software, add these functions. A useful little thing is the hold and call waiting mode. I don't use it often, but sometimes I do. There is also the possibility of setting up a conference call. Naturally, the phone, released in early 2000, supports all the functions of sending short text messages. The text is easy to type from the keyboard, since the buttons are large. I did not notice any peculiarities when working with SMS, except that it is easier to read them on a four-line screen than on a two-line one (for its predecessor). Listening to voice mail raises no objections, everything is quite simple and logical. The device, connected by means of a cord and a special card to a laptop, can also act as a modem. The data transfer speed is 9600, it is limited, rather, by the capabilities of the network than by the phone. It is worth noting that when connecting to the World Wide Web, you will have to pay two bills. One - from a mobile operator, the other - for using the Internet. It is a pity that it is not always possible to choose the connecting cord of the desired length. If necessary, a fax can be sent directly from the phone, but for some reason its quality leaves much to be desired (it is likely that this is a feature of my device). Another annoying little thing is the lack of a calculator. Connection quality Now about reception and communication. Registration on the network is very fast. In the city (Moscow), communication problems almost never arise, the indicator always shows a confident reception. I've heard a lot about the amazing ability of Motorola handsets to reach places where no other phone works. To check, I decided to go out of town anyway, choosing Siemens C25 as a starting point. According to the indicator on the display of the devices, the M3788 really keeps the network longer, steadily showing a higher signal level. But as for communication, there is one small feature here - you can only talk to the place where the C25 loses the network. Then the conversation smoothly turns into listening to wheezing. At the other end of the wire, the situation is about the same. In general, if we correlate the sensitivity of the device with the quality of communication, the phone cannot be called too highly sensitive, it simply fixes the network where it is already almost impossible to speak, where other handsets honestly show the way out of the reception area. In general, the rumors about the amazing, incomparable sensitivity of the phone were only partially justified. Now directly about communication. Despite the rather fresh model, the device still distorts the sound a little, in case of uncertain reception, failures often occur, the device swallows individual letters and even whole words. There is practically no "barrel" effect - when the voice becomes a little nasal and is accompanied by an echo. It seems to me that for a tube of this price group, the sound is relatively good. I really didn't like the speaker volume control system. It is almost impossible to change the sound intensity during a conversation: the fact is that the adjustment key is located on the front panel of the device, reaching it with your finger during a conversation is not an easy task. The situation is worsened by the fact that this button is the third from the top, and pressing the "C" key located above leads to an instant disconnection. Several times I "hung up" at the most inopportune moment of the conversation, but still have not learned how to "blindly" change the volume. You have to tear the device away from your ear, sacrificing precious cellular time for the sake of better audibility. The microphone works perfectly, none of the interlocutors complained. It is located close enough to the mouth (fortunately, the size of the tube allows), you can even shout down a moving train in the Moscow subway. In general, talking on the phone is pleasant: it fits well in the hand, the hand practically does not get tired during a long conversation. Sometimes it seems that you are not talking on a cell phone, but on a regular home phone. Accessories Now about the little things. There are a lot of accessories for this device on the market. You can pick up a case of almost any color and shape; more convenient, in my opinion, tight-fitting leather zippers. As for the materials, there are transparent plastic, leather, and all kinds of combinations of leather with mothers. If you buy a non-branded case, immediately check whether the hole on the side of the case matches the charger connector: otherwise, you will have to arm yourself with an awl and make a hole yourself. When choosing a case, remember that it may be the only "mitigating factor" in the fall. If you have to talk on the phone often, I advise you to buy an earphone with a microphone. You can install a holder for the device or a hands-free kit in the car. Service A little about the service. If we compare the cost of repair with the price of the device itself, then the most reasonable solution is not to repair it at all. I got the impression that the service does not even suspect how much this model costs. Conventional diagnostics will cost almost half the tube, and repairs can even cost more than a new cell phone. Another thing is if you want to change the software (this is more relevant for owners of non-Russian handsets). There are a lot of offers here: from setting the native language to clocks and alarm clocks. It is inexpensive, the procedure itself is quite fast and painless, even opening the body of the device is not required. Overall Impression General impression of the phone: a high-quality, inexpensive handset, the main advantages of which include good build quality, a large high-contrast display, operation in the GSM900 - 1800 standard. functions (for example, vibrating alert, calculator and clock).
