ERICSSON T29S

Many adherents of the Ericsson T28s phone were looking forward to the appearance of the T29 model, since it has a wap-browser and several additional features despite the design and dimensions similar to the T28. Let's see what this device is and how its many functions work.

Appearance, battery

Ericsson's designers decided to stick with the concept first proposed in the T28, a small flat phone. The appearance of the T28 may be bewildering, but most buyers still like it, which cannot be said about the T29, which leaves the impression of a massive, bulky device due to the large fixed antenna and the battery protruding strongly from the back. The weight of the phone is small, only 95 grams.

Unlike the T28, the flip is opened by hands, not by a button, which is apparently due to the large number of breakages of this button in the first batches of the T28. The flip opens easily, it is active, to open it and answer the call, you can use only one hand.

At the top of the front panel there is a service indicator, at the top at the back there is a plug that covers the installation place for a clip that can be used to wear the phone on a belt. The clip is not included in the package.

The keyboard is made of plastic and covered with silver paint on top. Very nice backlit keys in the dark. As in the T20, the lower row of buttons is inconvenient: it is difficult to press them due to the protrusion of the flip.

A slim 850 mAh lithium-ion battery is supplied as standard. Its charge time is about 4 hours from a fully discharged state. According to the manufacturer, it can work up to 150 hours in standby mode and up to 7 hours in talk mode. My phone worked stably for 3 to 4 days with 10-15 minutes of calls per day. By swinging the side key, you can find out the approximate operating time of the phone in each of the modes. Of course, this information is indicative, but sometimes it is very useful. The battery charge indicator in this model is multi-stage.

The SIM card holder has a simple design. Inserting a card into the holder is easy, but taking it out is more difficult, you have to pry it off. For those who frequently change cards, this holder design will create some difficulties.

Phone functions, menu

Much that I wrote about the T20 phone is also true for this model. Therefore, let me quote some excerpts from the T20 review.

We turn on the phone - the screen saver is played, the device beeps cheerfully, and the name of the mobile operator appears on the display. The screen in this model has three lines, which, in my opinion, is a disadvantage, not an advantage (the on-screen icons in the bottom line are quite small). In addition, when you look at the display not directly, but from the side, the network signal indicator is poorly visible (but this is already nit-picking). The screen backlight is emerald green. In standby mode, in addition to the name of the mobile operator, you can see the icons of the network signal strength (5 bars) and battery charge (without bars, measured dynamically), as well as the clock. In standby mode, the bottom line is occupied by the clock and icons of the charge level, as well as the signal level, animation is displayed on top. It is possible to disable it, since it does not carry any payload, and it works extremely unevenly.

Pressing the side buttons shows the status and estimated battery life, date, time (in two formats) and the name of the current profile. The two time formats are regular time and internet time from Swatch. Swatch Internet Time is a feature pioneered by Swatch watches. The day is divided into 1000 bits, and regardless of the time zone, the time on the Internet will be the same for Los Angeles (06.50 - local time, @618 - Swatch), for Ibiza (15.50 - @618), Goa (19.20 - @618) and finally Sydney (00.50 - @618).

The phone's menu is thoughtful, at the top there are a number of tabs corresponding to the main menu items (there are 7 in total), you can get there by pressing any arrow on the keyboard. Entering a separate menu is done by pressing the Yes key or by typing the menu number on the keyboard. Each sub-item also has its own number, by typing which you can select the desired option. Returning to the top menu level is done by pressing the No key. You can scroll through the lists in the menu using the arrow keys. Simple and convenient, and most importantly - the menu does not slow down.

Of the settings, it should be noted the ability to create your own welcome message, and there is support for a graphic message with sound, but to enable it, you need to download a graphic file to your phone. In the absence of an IR port, this becomes an expensive pleasure (a data cable from a PC is not cheap).

A one-minute timer that fires during a call.

An alarm clock, countdown timer, stopwatch are also provided. The stopwatch stores intermediate results in memory, which can be viewed later. The calculator is ordinary and very inconvenient.

There is a new function for converting Internet time to normal and vice versa.

It is possible to customize shortcut keys.

The 6 editable user profiles are well organized and therefore easy to use.

Working with text on the phone is implemented very well. You can write in one of two languages i.e. English and Russian (when Russian support is enabled). You can switch from one language to another at any time when writing a short message or the name of the subscriber in the phone book, just press #. You can create up to 10 templates for SMS messages, which is very convenient. The disadvantage of working with short messages in this device is the screen size: it is painfully inconvenient to read messages longer than two lines. But a definite plus is the ability to receive and send short messages without any special settings. There is a function of the SMS-message counter, which is sometimes convenient when counting the total number of sent messages.

Voice dialing for 10 numbers works quite well, it recognizes speech even in conditions of high noise levels, however, some short words, such as "Zhenya", are not perceived by voice dialing at all. The case is single, I did not find another word to which the phone would not respond.

The phone book is designed for 100 numbers, in addition, you can use the memory of the SIM card, up to 10 e-mail numbers are stored separately.

Both individual subscribers and their groups can be assigned their own melodies. In total, the phone has 10 preset melodies, 4 you can record yourself. Melodies can be used as a ringtone or an alarm clock.

Naturally, there is a list of the last calls made (30 numbers) with the date and time of the call.

Auto redial works quite well, the busy signal is recognized well.

The phone has 5 games: Tetris, Erix, E-maze, Ballpop and Game. And if the first ones are familiar to us from T20, then the last game is an arcade game transferred from the first PCs to the phone. Nothing particularly interesting, besides, it is inconvenient to play due to the limitations imposed by the small size of the display.

SMS or EMS

This model is the first to use the new standard Enhanced Messaging Service - sending graphics and ringtones to other phones. EMS allows you to send ringtones to phones that do not support this technology (signals will be correctly read). In the future, EMS technology will become standard for Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Siemens phones. So far, everything is not as beautiful as it is said in advertising statements.

In particular, the phone really has a lot of pictures (9 sections). Pictures from one section can be deleted, all the others recorded in the phone's memory cannot be deleted. There is a small graphics editor that will help you draw a picture. To make it easier, you can use the zoom function: the screen is still too small. Any of the pictures can be sent along with the message. The resulting pictures are stored in memory.

I did not find the function of sending a melody, no matter how I searched. The instructions describe only the process of saving the received melody. And, of course, sending messages with graphics to phones without EMS technology support does not work, which was tested using the Siemens C35i as an example.

The phone supports the connected message mode, where three ordinary short messages are sent and received as one. When sending a linked message, remember that if the phone does not support this mode, three messages will be sent.

There is a chat mode that allows you to chat in the same way as it was first implemented on the Nokia 3310.

WAP-browser settings are simple, everything works fine.

Sound quality, sensitivity

In general, there are no complaints about the sound quality of the phone, the volume of the speaker is enough, you can talk even not at the maximum (8 volume positions). The sound itself is somewhat muffled, but you quickly get used to it - after all, this is a phone, not a music center. The speech is transmitted very clearly, there are no distortions, dips and other shortcomings.

When testing this phone, I expected that the sensitivity would be below average. However, I was wrong: the device's sensitivity is better than in such phones as Ericsson T28s, R320s, T18s. According to this parameter, the phone is quite comparable with other modern devices (I think this is good news for Ericsson fans).

An unpleasant feature that was discovered when using the device was that when you redial a number, the phone sometimes went into standby mode for no apparent reason. To still dial the number and get through, I had to press redial several times. This feature of Ericsson T29 appears frequently and does not depend on external conditions, such as, for example, signal strength. In my opinion, there is a bug in the software.

The vibrating alert works quite well - you can feel it. Having multiple profiles makes life easier for the user.

Сonclusion

An intelligent device with many functions. The disadvantages include the small size of the display and the error when re-typing. The main advantage is the absence of problems with sensitivity, like other phones from this company. The T29 implements developments that will soon become standard for phones from many companies. This device offers quite a decent set of features. If you are a follower of the Ericsson brand, then I recommend paying attention to the T29.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

School and life 26.08.2012

After the Second World War, school reforms were carried out in many countries, mainly aimed at lengthening the school years. But it was only in Sweden that the government approached the matter with caution and conducted an experiment first.

Some of the children continued to study in the old way, 8 years old, for excellent students (optional) one or two more classes. The rest of the school districts introduced compulsory nine-year secondary education, with no options. The experiment lasted from 1949 to 1962, after which the results were recognized as successful and the new system was distributed throughout the country.

Recently, sociologists from Stockholm University looked at the results of the then reform from an unexpected angle: how did it affect the life expectancy of students? It turned out that up to the age of 40 in both groups the mortality was the same, but from 40 to 70 for those who studied in a new way, the risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular disease or accidents was lowered.

Demographers have previously noticed that more educated people get sick less often and live longer than less educated people, but the Swedish experience is interesting in that it has proved the benefits of even one extra year spent in high school on the material of the whole country.
