ALCATEL 511. Review of mobile phone
Review
Phones from Alcatel have traditionally been distinguished by design, which could be liked or not, but was always memorable. The Alcatel 511 is no exception to this pleasant rule: the silver case (aluminum color) with dark, almost black plastic inserts on the sides looks very attractive (urban gray). It should be noted that the 511 model has three color schemes, they all differ in the color of the plastic on the side surfaces - in addition to black, there is blue (bright blue) and red plastic (orient red), while the body color remains the same, silver. The case itself is also made of plastic. The absence of an external antenna made it possible to make the device very small (97x47x20 mm), and the use of a 600 mAh lithium-ion battery reduced its weight to 75 grams. According to the manufacturer, the phone with this battery can work up to 280 hours in standby mode and up to 6 hours in talk mode. Under the conditions of Moscow networks, the phone works for about 3 days with 5-7 minutes of calls per day, the time for a full charge of the battery is about 2 hours. By the way, the phone comes with a regular travel charger, not a desktop one, as for other models from Alcatel. The peculiarity of the phone is only accentuated by the features of its design: for example, the charger plug is not at the bottom, like in most devices, but on the top left side surface. Nearby is a connector for a telephone headset. Due to this arrangement, it is difficult to use the charger and the headset at the same time, apparently, the engineers considered that most people do not use them at the same time. It also becomes clear that there is no desktop charger, it will most likely not be available for this model, since the design of the phone does not allow using it. Another feature of the phone lies in the fact that the send and end keys are combined into one - a logical solution, which has not yet been implemented by anyone. Nearby is the navigation key, it is three-way, responds to pressing (OK), and can also be moved up or down, in particular, so you can navigate through the menu. On the left in the top row is the C key, which also serves to turn the phone on / off. All keys are made of plastic and painted in silver color. In terms of size and distance between them, the numeric keys are quite convenient to use, it is inconvenient to press only the bottom row, but they are often not used, although it contains the number 0. The display of Alcatel 511 is very good, it has the ability to display up to 6 lines of text with a minimum font size or only 4, but with a normal one, and the display resolution is 96x65 pixels. The font size change function will not be available in all countries, it all depends on the delivery option. The backlight of the screen is bright, emerald green, very pleasant to use and perfectly distinguishable in the dark. Menus, settings and features In standby mode, the phone screen displays the clock, date, operator's network name, signal strength, battery level (3 bars), as well as a graphic saver, if it is activated. To get to the menu from the standby mode, just press the navigation key, its deviation up brings up the "Messages" menu, and down - the phone book. There are only 11 items in the main menu, there is no quick navigation through them, you will have to move only manually, this is a minus. In the menu for the first time you come across the quality of Russification - it is not very neat, sloppy. So, some menu items have truncated names, for example, "Settings": in this case, the word did not fit on the screen, but in the case of "Record", everything is fine with the length, but the word is still truncated. The situation is incomprehensible, since the item "Messages" is abbreviated with a dot ("Reported.") - why couldn't it be done with other items in the same way?! The phone book in this model is organized in a very interesting way: for one name, you can enter up to three phone numbers - office, home and mobile. When calling from the phone book, it is enough to press the call send key on the name to make it possible to select a number. You can also assign voice dialing to any number, up to 50 voice tags in total. In addition, you can organize all entries into three categories: business, personal and other - you can also leave the number without a category at all. For the first three types of numbers, you can choose your own ringing option, but you cannot do this for a separate entry in the phone book. Everything that was stated above is quite common for modern devices and it cannot be called interesting. But the whole highlight is that Alcatel engineers have implemented a phone book with several numbers for one name without the phone's internal memory, all numbers are stored on the SIM card. Therefore, the phone has a SIM card control function, when changing the card, the phone asks the user whether this card is temporary or permanent. If you answer that the card is temporary, then it will not be possible to create up to 3 entries for one name in the phone book. When returning a permanent card, the structure of the phone book will be saved, and if another card is called the main one, the structure for the old one will not be saved. On other devices (Nokia 6210), the phone entries for the same name from the Alcatel 511 phone book look like three entries with the same name but different phone numbers. In the "Messages" menu, it is possible to read received SMS messages or send a new one. Text input is possible only in English, the Cyrillic alphabet promised in this device is not yet available, although I would like to hope that it will appear in commercial samples, like the Russian T9 dictionary. Nevertheless, there are still several templates in Russian in the phone. There are also no problems with receiving Russian-language messages, everything is perfectly readable. It is possible to send a message to a group of subscribers at once, everything is simple and convenient. In addition to ordinary messages, the phone supports sending pictures along with a short message (there are enough of them in the device), emoticons (smiles) and melodies. It is possible to send all these messages to phones with EMS support, there should be no problems. The phone works with broadcast messages, but the problem is that the screen will constantly and entirely occupy one message, for example, for MTS this is the Capital, it is very inconvenient. A similar situation with this feature was in the OneTouch 500 and 700 series phones. By the way, pictures, in addition to being sent to another device, can be used as a screen saver, they look very nice, and a large selection of pictures allows you to change them almost daily. Now let's move on to the most interesting, namely, ring tones and melodies: there are 32 of them in the phone, plus you can create up to 2 of your own melodies. It is possible to record a ringtone from a microphone, and in this case you are not limited by anything, everything is in your hands, complete freedom of creativity. The melodies are polyphonic and sound good, but still they are rougher than those of Panasonic phones. This can be explained by the fact that the phone has a really loud ringer, it can be heard even in a rather noisy place. The volume of the call is due not least to the high-quality speaker, which also serves to provide hands-free communication. This function is traditionally well implemented for phones of this brand, but of course, you can't use the built-in speakerphone in a car, it is more suitable for use in an office or a quiet home environment. It is possible to select several types of call: it is just a sound, and only a vibrating alert, or you can choose a mixed mode, when the vibrating alert is triggered several times and then a melody is heard. The phone has a voice recorder that allows you to save up to 20 notes, with a total duration of no more than three minutes. You have the ability to listen, delete and rename individual notes. The phone has an alarm clock, which, like other reminders, works even when the phone is turned off. The alarm clock is extremely simple: you can only set the time, and that's it. You can choose any melody for the alarm, the same is true for the organizer (up to 5 events) and for birthday reminders (also up to 5 dates). In the organizer, you can program an event to fire once, repeat every day, or weekly. The phone also has a calculator, a currency converter and three games. All toys are very rich in graphics, they are reminiscent of the first games on desktop PCs. So, killer Exp is a classic arcade game in which you need to fly a spaceship through a tunnel and kill all life on the way. There is no need to offend anyone in the game eyes&star, this is a remake of tic-tac-toe. The latest Run Run game, here you need to run through a bunch of mazes and collect all sorts of things. The phone has a wap-browser version 1.1, the settings are normal. It is only worth noting that the browser will not be present in all phones, it all depends on the market for which the device is intended. Subjective impressions The sensitivity of the phone is average, there are no problems in urban conditions, but in the zone of a weak signal, the connection often breaks, words fall out. To the credit of the device, in problem areas it quickly finds the network and allows you to make calls - the main thing is not to move abruptly, then there may be a deterioration in sound or loss of connection. The volume of the speaker is high, the sound is soft and pleasant, I attribute this to the speaker. The dimensions and shape of the phone are convenient, it can be carried both in a shirt pocket and in jeans. The battery life on a single charge is sufficient (3 days), but not optimal, because when using the speakerphone, games and other functions, the battery life is reduced and can be as little as a couple of days. The vibrating alert is average in strength, it is practically not felt from the pockets of outerwear, it is better to carry the phone on your belt. Voice dialing is implemented very well: 50 tags is really a lot. Even in a busy street, the phone correctly perceives tags. When entering voice tags, there is a control, so you cannot enter the same word as a tag for two numbers. The redial list is combined with records of incoming and missed calls, the date and time of the call are indicated. The list is simple, but more, as a rule, is not needed, this general list is called up by pressing the call send key. During a call, the current connection time is displayed on the screen, when it ends, this time and the total time of all calls are shown. Also, when a call comes in, the display backlight turns on, after a while it automatically turns off, just press the menu key to turn it on again. The phone leaves a pleasant impression of itself: it is light and at the same time functional, there is a voice recorder and simple reminders, EMS support is included. The shortcomings include the rudeness of Russification, the simplicity of the alarm clock and reminders, poorly implemented work with broadcast messages. And finally: it is for this phone that the SAR value (0.53 watts / kg) is indicated in the instructions. In terms of additional accessories, this phone also promises to be very interesting. In the list, in addition to the usual things, there is a keyboard for typing SMS messages. The supplied standard plastic holder for carrying the phone on your belt can be replaced with a branded case or another type of holder.
