For many millennia of their early history, people did not know the use of metals. The main material for the manufacture of the first tools was stone, and it was with the processing of stone that the first great discoveries in the history of mankind were associated. Not every stone can be used to make a good tool. The earliest were made of pebbles, much later man mastered flints. Seashores, riverbeds, especially mountain streams, are rich in pebbles of various sizes, shapes, colors and rocks.

Chopped
Various forms of hand axes found: 1) in England; 2) in France; K) in Spain; 4) in Algeria; 5) South Africa; 6) in Palestine; 7) in India; 8) in America

The rolled shape of these stones is very convenient for gripping them by hand. Therefore, it was oval flattened pebbles that served the ancient man as the material for the manufacture of his first working tool - a hand axe. Two stones were required for work: one (softer) served as a blank, and the other (from harder rocks) - for striking. The upholstery started at the narrow end. After the first impact, a recess in the form of a shell was formed on the surface of the workpiece. It served as a shock platform for further processing. The craftsman continued to beat the edges of the cleavage first from one side, then from the other side of the stone. With each new impact, the number of impact sites increased, and the workpiece gradually took on the required shape.

This work required a lot of patience, concentration and skill. Any blow was a kind of creative act. Any incorrectly made chipping led to the fact that the workpiece deteriorated, and processing had to be started all over again. The natural desire of man was to avoid this unpleasant result. Therefore, the technique of stone processing gradually became more complicated.

An important step along this path was taken when a new tool came into use - a chipper, which played the role of a modern chisel or adze. As it was used a sharp hard stone or the horn of a red deer, which was distinguished by great hardness. By placing the chipper at the desired point on the workpiece and hitting it with another stone or wooden mallet, the master could coordinate the force and direction of the blow much more accurately. At the same time, the chip turned out to be long and thin, and the product took on a more regular shape.

But in order to finally subdue the material, a person had to master a technique that made it possible to remove excess layers of stone literally millimeters. With such accuracy, it was possible to give the workpiece any conceived shape. This became possible when the percussion technique began to be supplemented by the wringer technique. Having given the stone a suitable look with several blows, the master put down the mallet and began to act as a chipper like a chisel, removing excess material in thin layers.

It is curious that this work is completely beyond the power of a modern person who squeezes out no more than 60 kg on a dynamometer on average. In order to successfully cope with the wringing technique, the human hand had to be at least six times stronger. Such was the power of the Neanderthal, which, according to scientists, was not inferior in strength to the current gorilla.

The hand ax was the first great invention of ancient man, greatly facilitating his life. With the help of a chopper, holding it differently, either by a blunt or by a sharp end, it was possible to grind and grind plant food, scrape and clean the bark, crush nuts, separate roots and branches, loosen the earth in search of root crops, kill small animals. It was a versatile tool with many different functions.

Simultaneously with the hand ax, flakes from flint turned out to be in the service of man - various points, piercings, ancient side-scrapers. This simple tool allowed a person to skin a carcass, cut the skin, and divide the meat into pieces.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Solar panel-boiler 27.07.2013

A team of researchers from Rice University has developed a unique solar collector based on metal and carbon nanoparticles. This device turns water into high temperature steam that can be used for heating or power generation. In particular, the developers suggest using the device as an autoclave, that is, for sterilizing instruments.

Unfortunately, in some regions, such as Africa, or areas of natural disasters or warfare, sterilization of surgical instruments can become a problem. In such cases, a device that produces steam with the help of sunlight could help. Usually compact solar collectors do not provide enough hot steam to quickly sterilize a set of instruments.

Scientists from Rice University solved this problem by adding a transparent tank with metal and carbon nanoparticles to the collector design, which absorb solar heat much better than pure water or a simple dark metal surface. The nanoparticles do not rise with the steam, so the steam leaving the plant is clean and can be used to produce potable or distilled water. Accordingly, the nanoparticles are reused - they remain in the transparent collector tank. The nanoparticles dissolved in water make it possible to heat water faster and stronger than conventional collectors do. In addition, the installation itself has smaller dimensions. During the experiments, the developers created a solar autoclave with a closed cycle, which in 30 minutes sterilizes surgical instruments no worse than electric autoclaves.

Also, the developers have assembled a plant designed for wastewater treatment, in which dirty water is heated by sunlight, turns into steam, and then condenses. The output is water suitable for drinking. Thus, an effective sterilization and cleaning technology has been created, which can be widely used in areas where there is no electricity or where it makes sense to save it with a solar collector. In particular, in India and Africa, the problem of clean drinking water is extremely relevant. Electricity is far from being everywhere, people drink unboiled water, wash their children in it. This is one of the main reasons for the unfavorable epidemiological situation in these regions and the high mortality associated with it. At the same time, there is an abundance of sunlight in India and Africa.

In addition, such installations could be useful in the field, for example, they can be made mobile - on the chassis of cars.
