Why is the she-wolf one of the main symbols of the city of Rome?

One of the main symbols of Rome is the Capitoline she-wolf. According to ancient Roman myth, she nursed the twins Romulus and Remus with her milk, one of whom later became the founder of Rome.

Numitor was the king of the city of Alba Longa (now located not far from Rome). His younger brother Amulius, having seized the throne, expelled Numitor, killed his son, and, in order to leave her childless, daughter Rhea Sylvia, ordained vestals (temple servants who took a vow of celibacy). However, she gave birth to the god of war Mars (according to one version - from Amulius himself in the guise of Mars) two twins - Romulus and Remus.

Upon learning of this, the king ordered the babies to be thrown into the waters of the Tiber, and their mother, for breaking a vow, was buried in the ground. However, Mars did not allow the death of his children. The river stream carried the basket with the twins to the shore, where a she-wolf found them and nursed them with her milk.

After some time, the babies were discovered by the royal shepherd Faustul, who, together with his wife Akka Larentia, raised them. The twins grew up strong and agile, bold and daring in the face of danger. Over time, each of them became the leader of a detachment of vagrants and runaway slaves.

During one of the raids on the herds of Numitor, his shepherds seized Remus and brought him to the deposed king. After listening to Remus' answer to the question of who he was and where he came from, Numitor suspected that Romulus and Remus were his grandchildren, whom he considered dead. His suspicions turned into complete certainty when he saw the basket in which the babies were thrown into the Tiber. Having learned from Numitor the secret of their origin, the twins killed Amulius and returned the Albanian throne to their grandfather.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Wheat grown tolerant of salty soil 23.03.2012

A group of Australian scientists, with the participation of the University of Adelaide, has found a way to create various durum wheat varieties that increase grain yields by 25% on saline soils.

Interestingly, the Australians claimed the new wheat varieties were not genetically modified crops, although a special gene was introduced into the wheat genome to confer salt tolerance. Although they used molecular techniques to identify the salt tolerance gene, the scientists said the introduction of the gene was not done by traditional genetic modification methods. This means that products made from such wheat will not be classified as transgenic and can be sold without any restrictions.

For the first time, scientists have managed to introduce a salt-tolerance gene into the wheat genome, and field studies show that the new wheat is not only not sensitive to salty soil, but also yields 20-25% more yield on it.

The development of the Australians is very important, since 20% of agricultural land worldwide already faces the problem of soil salinity. The problem is getting worse every year and poses a great threat to food production, especially in light of global climate change. Soil salinity is a concern in Australia, which is the world's second largest exporter of wheat after the US. According to experts, in 2050 the world population will reach nine billion people, and the demand for food will grow by 100%. Salt-tolerant crops in the future will become the most important tool for ensuring the food security of mankind.
