Do ants smell?

Ants are such interesting insects that we would need much more space than we can afford to tell about all the amazing features of their life. Therefore, we will limit ourselves to only a few of them. To begin with, let's say that ants can be found in the sands of deserts, and on the prairies, and on the sea coast, and on the slopes of mountains, and in forests - in almost all corners of the world, except perhaps for the tops of the highest mountains! They can live in almost any climate.

There are thousands of varieties of ants, and they are all relatives of bees and bumblebees, that is, they belong to the same order of insects. All ants are social creatures. This means that they live in colonies. There are three types of ants in each colony: males, females (or queens), and worker ants.

Males and females of almost all ant species have wings, but workers are always wingless. After her mating departure, the queen gets rid of the wings. Ant colonies can vary greatly in size. In some of them, only a few dozen of these hardworking workers live, in others - hundreds of thousands! Although ants differ considerably in size, they are more or less similar in appearance. A pair of long antennae, or antennae, hangs from the ant's head, they constantly sway and not only feel objects, but are also organs of smell. Therefore, although the ant does not have a "nose", it can smell.

The antennae also help the ant to distinguish and communicate with its fellow tribesmen. An ant's head contains a brain, a pair of complex or compound eyes, strong jaws, and a mouth. In addition to compound eyes, most ants have additional organs of vision - simple eyes, or stemmas. The life cycle of an ant is very interesting. The females leave the colonies and rise high into the sky, the males follow them. After this mating flight, the males die almost immediately, and each female, or queen, flies away and establishes a new colony. She burrows into the ground, arranges a nest in this way and lays her eggs in it.

After the eggs hatch into legless larvae, the queen helps each of them to spin a cocoon. When a young ant grows inside the cocoon, she tears one end of the cocoon and pulls the ant out. Almost immediately, these newborn worker ants begin their adult life, full of labors in arranging their common home - the colony and special care for the uterus, which in English is called the "queen".

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

When did civilization appear?

Much time has passed since man has reached what we call a civilized society. At first, man, like animals, was in a wild state. He did not speak and ate only what he could find. Later, people began to live in groups, learned how to make fire, and even later they learned how to make tools and hunt. Man learned to make pottery for cooking, began to live in tribes, could move from one area to another.

The next stage of human development, which was called the era of barbarism, showed that man had learned to grow food from seeds and tame animals. Then he began to smelt such metals as copper and iron, which made it possible to produce more advanced tools and build his own dwelling. The appearance of rock paintings can be considered the end of the era of barbarism and the beginning of the era of civilization.

The invention of writing is considered the beginning of the era of civilization, as it allowed a person to record the events of the past. Thus, people could study the experience of their ancestors. This happened about 5-6 thousand years ago. By the time man has reached this stage of development, he too has improved in many ways. He developed agriculture and industry to the point where people could live in villages and even cities. There was management, trade, laws, there was also the migration of people.

The earliest civilizations known to us from the history of civilization are Egyptian and Babylonian. The Egyptians invented writing 4500 years ago. They had a well-thought-out control system; they used mathematical calculations when building the pyramids; they had a calendar; skillful architects appeared; various mechanisms were used. About 4000 years ago, civilization developed on the island of Crete, and about 4500 years ago, the Sumerian civilization developed on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>
