What is Pompeii?

Among the many attractions in Italy, one of the most breathtaking are the ruins of Pompeii. However, it is wrong to call ruins a city whose age is about 2000 years, preserved in its original form to our times better than almost any other of the cities of antiquity.

Why did it happen so? The fact is that on August 24, 74 AD, there was a powerful eruption of the dormant volcano Vesuvius, located in southern Italy. A thick layer of lava, stones and ash thrown out of the crater completely buried two nearby cities under it. The city of Herculaneum, located 3-4 km from the volcano, hid deep under the waves of a mud stream flowing down the slope of the volcano. Pompeii, which was away from Vesuvius, turned out to be covered with a dry "rain" of ash and pumice - a light rock. Pompeii was buried under a five-six-meter layer of these "sediments".

Soaked in water, the mass of ash began to look like clay, and as a result, everything that was under it turned into forms, like those that sculptors use to create their works. Thus, both cities have survived almost unchanged to this day.

The residents of the cities who survived the catastrophe returned to their original places when the eruption ended, and managed to dig out most of the valuables from under the thick layer of ash, including marble slabs that served as decorations and building material for large buildings.

In the Middle Ages, all this history was forgotten. In 1594, the construction of an aqueduct began there, and the ruins of the two cities were rediscovered. However, only in 1763 did the real archaeological excavations of Pompeii begin, which are still ongoing. Nevertheless, a significant part of the city is still hidden from people's eyes!

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

For whom is the empty grave near the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad reserved?

The Masjid al-Nabawi mosque in Medina has a separate Green House, inside which is the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad. Next to it are buried the first two caliphs, Abu Bakr and Umar, and on the other side there is another empty grave. Many Muslims and Quran commentators believe that it is reserved for Jesus, who will return to Earth to kill the Antichrist and then reign for 40 years.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Bitterness along the Great Silk Road 16.05.2011

The expedition of Italian physiologists traveled 14 thousand kilometers from Trieste in Italy to Shanghai in China along the route of the ancient Great Silk Road through Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.

Along the way, scientists examined the sense of bitter taste in more than 700 local residents. It turned out that about 37% of the inhabitants of the Pamirs are very sensitive to bitter. In Europe, only 7-15% of the population feel the slightest bitterness so strongly.
