What is the main cause of death after a shipwreck?

According to statistics, hundreds of thousands of people become victims of maritime disasters every year, while a third of them - those who, it would seem, have already escaped - are in a boat or on a raft. The mechanism of such a death seems to be similar to that characteristic of the so-called voodoo death, known among a number of tribes in Africa, Australia and New Guinea. The natives of these regions, having learned that a special kind of curse has been imposed on them, fall into a panic, which is soon replaced by despair, apathy and ends in death.

Ultimately, psychophysiologists say, everything depends on the person himself - on his internal preparedness for the situation, on the way of actions and thoughts. People who are confident in their abilities, in friends, in their country, in the fact that they will be searched for and will certainly be saved, as well as believers who are convinced that God will not let them perish, have more chances to wait for rescuers alive.
