Which planet in the solar system has the greatest contrast between night and day temperatures?

Mercury rotates very slowly around its own axis, making only one and a half revolutions during the period of complete revolution around the Sun.

Due to such a slow movement, it turns out that a day (the time interval between two successive sunrises) on Mercury is equal to two Mercury years. Consequently, some areas of the planet's surface are under the scorching rays of the luminary for a very long time, while others stay in the shadow for just as long.

Therefore, on the surface of Mercury, the contrast between night and day temperatures is stronger than on any other planet. The temperature in the night (opposite from the Sun) regions of the planet reaches minus 180 degrees Celsius, and in the daytime (facing the Sun) it can rise to 430 degrees Celsius.

What was the purpose of the first street light?

The first street traffic light, installed near the Houses of Parliament in London in 1868, was intended to control the flow of pedestrians.

During the day, signals were given using two wings (like a railway semaphore), and at night - through red and green gas lamps.

Said British prototype street light did not last long: shortly after installation, it exploded, killing a London policeman.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Smallest 128Gb Flash Memory Chip 16.02.2013

Micron Technology has unveiled a 128Gb TLC NAND flash memory chip, which the manufacturer calls the smallest of its kind. The novelty is made according to the standards of 20 nm.

The area of the chip, each cell of which can store three bits of information, is 146 sq. mm. This is 25% smaller than the area of a 20nm MLC NAND chip of the same density, capable of storing two bits of information in each cell.

TLC NAND memory is designed for use in memory cards and flash drives. According to some estimates, this segment will account for 35% of the total output of NAND flash memory (in physical terms) this year.
Evaluation samples of TLC NAND chips with a density of 128 Gb are already coming to some customers. Mass production of memory should begin in the second quarter.
