Phraseologism: Close your eyes and think of England.

Meaning: Commonly cited ironically as a vivid description of the puritanism and stiffness of the Victorian era, the so-called "Victorian values".

Origin: Usually attributed to Queen Victoria (1837-1901) of England, who allegedly gave this advice to her daughter on her wedding night. But English-language reference books give a different history of this expression. This is an entry in the diary of Lady Hillington (1857-1940) for 1912: “I am glad that now Charles calls my bedroom less than before. [...] And when I hear his steps at my door, I lie down on bed, close my eyes, spread my legs and think of England." This entry was published in (3) The Greatness and Decline of the British Empire by J. Gotthorne-Hardy (1972).
