Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Deciphering the Charred Herculaneum Scrolls 12.02.2024

Almost two thousand years ago, the eruption of Vesuvius covered the ancient city of Herculaneum, leaving behind a huge treasure - a library buried under a 20-meter layer of ash. Although some scrolls were discovered, most remained unreadable until recently when artificial intelligence came into play.

Brent Seales' lab at the University of Kentucky has spent years developing a "virtual deployment" method for deciphering ancient texts. By combining digital scanning with microcomputed tomography - a non-invasive technique often used in medicine to visualize cancerous tumors - and segmentation to create digital images of pages, experts were able to "read" texts, complementing them with texturing and flattening techniques. For this purpose, Seales developed Volume Cartography software, which in 2016 helped the team uncover the contents of the En Gedi scroll, found on the shores of the Dead Sea.

However, the Herculaneum scrolls were particularly challenging due to the use of carbon and water-based ink, unlike the En Gedi scrolls, where the ink contains metallic particles that stand out clearly in tomographic images. Ultimately, Seales and his team discovered that CT scanning could still detect minute differences in texture, indicating areas of papyrus with text, and trained an artificial neural network to recognize these differences.

In 2019, the researcher took two intact scrolls to a synchrotron X-ray facility near Oxford and took high-resolution scans, which were subsequently used as part of the Vesuvius Challenge, a competition launched in March last year. More than 1500 teams had the opportunity to earn significant amounts of money by successfully deciphering the text.

Last year, thanks to machine learning, it was possible to recognize some letters and even words on one of the scrolls, and now a joint team of three participants has deciphered 15 columns of text. In this ancient work, perhaps the author (Philodemus) discusses music, food and ways of enjoying life, and in the final section expresses his attitude towards possible ideological opponents, perhaps Stoics, who are unable to enjoy life.
