Damocles sword
Mark Tullius Cicero
Phraseologism: Sword of Damocles.
Meaning: About the constant danger threatening someone.
Origin: From the essay "Tusculan Conversations." Roman statesman, orator and writer Cicero (Mark Tullius Cicero, 106 - 43 BC). In this work, he reports an ancient Greek oral tradition about the Syracusan tyrant (that is, the ruler) Dionysius the Elder (432-367 BC) and his courtier named Damocles. Everyone knew that Damocles was passionately jealous of the tyrant, spoke of him as the happiest person who had achieved everything that one could wish for. Dionysius himself knew about this. And, wanting to teach the envious man a lesson, he arranged a magnificent feast, invited Damocles to it and even seated him in his place. In the midst of the feast, Damocles saw that a heavy sword was hanging right above his head, which was held in the air by only one horse hair ... Then Dionysius the Elder told all those gathered that now his envious Damocles felt that he, Dionysius, was the ruler of the city , experiences constantly - a feeling of constant fear for his life. So Damocles should not envy him. Hence the expression "sword of Damocles", which, presumably, gave birth to other similar images - "hanging by a thread", "being a hair's breadth from death", etc.

Oedipus is the legendary Greek hero, the wise and insightful ruler of the city of Thebes, the only one who was able to solve the riddle of the Sphinx. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Mother's milk and career
11.01.2008
British sociologists from the University of Bristol, following the fate of 1400 children born in Bristol between 1937 and 1939, came to the conclusion that breastfeeding later reflects well on a child's career.
Of those who were breastfed in infancy, most have climbed the social ladder compared to their parents, and of the "artists" only half have achieved this. Moreover, the chances of success in life are higher, the longer the child was not weaned. Such differences are also noted within the same family: if one child was breast-fed, and the other with substitutes, then greater success in life, as a rule, awaits the first.
The reasons for this phenomenon are unclear, although it has been observed that naturally fed children have a slightly higher IQ.
